Things to do in Baltimore this week 2/12/18

Hi friends! Lots happening this week with Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day celebrations going on. Some excellent theatre options too. Somehow I haven’t picked my show for the week but I doubt I will take a week off from seeing great theatre. Still some good reservations left for Wednesday on Open Table or if you are in the same boat as me no reservations are needed because of Ash Wednesday fasting, woo. I’ll be attending Dine, Dance and Dream on Saturday and I am SO looking forward to delicious food and wine as well as brushing up on my dance moves.

On another note, I decided to get back in to the saddle with restaurant reviews this year. I know I did quite a few when I first started the blog but had to take a break due to time and budget restraints. So keep your eyes peeled for some delicious food photos.

Baltimore Vegan Restaurant Week
February 9 – 18
Participating Baltimore Restaurants
Baltimore is an exciting and vibrant city full of unique neighborhoods and incredible diversity – and we in the restaurant business know first hand that nothing brings people together quite like good food. The mission of Baltimore Vegan Restaurant Week is to increase the awareness, benefits and accessibility of a plant-based diet through a fun, innovative and community-based experience across multiple neighborhoods. From February 9th through 18th, we are challenging restaurants to demonstrate their love and compassion for promoting healthier diets, reducing animal cruelty and saving the environment, by offering tasty and creative vegan options on their menus.  Some restaurants may even offer discounts and specials. It’s cold outside. Let Vegan Restaurant Week bring you some warmth. Join the celebration!

A Streetcar Named Desire at The Senator
9:30PM – 11:30PM
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Rd, Baltimore
“Vivien Leigh gives one of those rare performances that can truly be said to evoke pity and terror… When Marlon Brando, as the realist Stanley Kowalski, cuts through her pretensions and responds to her flirting with a direct sexual assault, the system of illusions that holds her together breaks down, and he is revealed as a man without compassion–both infant and brute. Elia Kazan’s direction is often stagey, the sets and the arrangement of actors are frequently too transparently ‘worked out,’ but who cares when you’re looking at two of the greatest performances ever put on film and listening to some of the finest dialogue ever written by an American?…”

Red Velvet by Lolita Chakrabarti
Feb 2 – 25
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore
A history-making production of Othello in 1833 will shock London audiences and reverberate down through the ages to influence theatre today. Red Velvet, by Lolita Chakrabarti, takes audiences backstage to witness the London debut of the trailblazing African-American actor Ira Aldridge as Shakespeare’s tragic Venetian general. He was the first man of color to play the role at an influential European theatre. Based on a true story, the play captures the emotion of the times and the drama both on stage and off surrounding this revolution in the theatre. This award-winning 2012 play has been called “gripping, intelligent, and passionate,” (The Financial Times) and reminds us “there is nothing new about our conversations over casting and race” (The Chicago Tribune).

Uncharted Allegories: Music by Michael McNeill
8PM & 9:30PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
Uncharted Allegories performs music by pianist and composer Michael McNeill.
Pianist Michael McNeill has cultivated a personal style that has found a home in contexts both mainstream and avant-garde, from the ethereal chamber-jazz sounds of resAUnance, to the post-bop energy of Kelly Bucheger’s What Would Mingus Do?, and in his own music for his trio with veteran improvisers Ken Filiano (bass) and Phil Haynes (drums) and for the Buffalo Jazz Octet. His two CDs with Filiano and Haynes have drawn praise from critics in the US and abroad, who note that the band plays “thoughtful… interactive music that is seriously playful” (StepTempest), “brimming with intelligence and passion” (AllAboutJazz.com), and that the trio “has much to offer not only to jazz or classical music, but music as a whole” (Music On The Run, Brazil).
