Things to do in Baltimore this week 6/10/19

I survived my first week back in the states. Getting back on the right sleep schedule has been hard but I’m back at it with Baltimore food and fun! Lot’s going on this week and I need to catch up on some awesome theatre I’ve missed. On Thursday I’m attending the Summer of Champagne Soirée at The Ivy Hotel. Champagne is one of my favorite beverages when it’s hot outside. On Friday I’m stopping by Pints in the Park at Center Plaza for some fun before I head over to see the 10x10x10 2019 at Fells Point Corner Theatre. I can’t wait and I love being able to vote for the winning show. Sunday is Father’s Day so take your Dad out to brunch. I’ll be catching the last show of Welcome to Shakesville by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society. I missed you Baltimore!

June Taste & Tour
6PM – 7PM
The Engineers Club
11 West Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our new Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail or sparkling water.

Entertaining and uplifting, Queens Girl in Africa captures an unforgettable moment in time for a teenager abroad—when questions of self and place intertwine with the realities of homework and hormones as Jacqueline assuredly, hilariously navigates the energy, excitement, and unpredictability of the 1960s.

BIG Time with Leslie F. Miller

Baltimore Improv Group at the BIG Theater
1727 North Charles Street, Baltimore
BIG Time – How do you know when you’ve truly succeeded? The answer is when the Baltimore Improv Group invites you to have your life memorialized in a series of made up, totally unprepared comedy scenes celebrating you! Come join a hand picked cast of BIG’s best improvisers as they comedically revere some of Baltimore’s most important movers and shakers. Leslie F. Miller likes to break things and put them back together in a random, yet tasteful, order. As a writer, photographer, and mosaic artist, she likes to make the small big and the big small. Her first book of nonfiction, “Let Me Eat Cake: A Celebration of Flour, Sugar, Butter, Eggs, Vanilla, Baking Powder, and a Pinch of Salt (Simon & Schuster, 2009),” chronicles the many times she has eaten cake from the trash can or a strange child’s plate. Leslie’s poetry, fiction, essays, photographs, and articles—some the winners of small awards—have been published in magazines, newspapers, and journals across the country. Baltimore Improv Group offers free comedy shows every night of the week. But please reserve so we know you’re coming.

Baltimore Theatre Project
45 W Preston St, Baltimore
George Frideric Handel composed SERSE to revolutionize opera so that it would speak to the audiences of his time. In the same way, In Series takes this most vibrant or Handel’s works – complete with its famous “largo,” Ombra Mai Fu — and transforms it to captivate our own contemporary audience. From the legends of ancient Persia, and steeped in Sufi culture, the pain and pleasure of learning to love are experienced through the magic of this music and a new narration crafted from the poetry of Rumi, one of the most popular poets of all time. With THE TALE OF SERSE, In Series announces the premiere of its own orchestra Innovatio, to perform this magnetic and visionary score on period instruments under the direction of conductor and adapter Timothy Nelson.

Celebrate Father’s Day with Billy Price and Rev. Billy Wirtz
7PM – 10PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
Reverend Billy C. Wirtz is a comic genius, gifted pianist and American musicologist who defies easy classification. “I like to think of myself as the Victor Borge of the blues,” states the Reverend, but Billy goes way beyond Borge both in scope of subject matter (from politics to social commentary) and, of course, in taste. In fact, no theme is too extreme, taboo, or undignified for the Reverend, so long as it garners a good laugh. 2016 Blues Music Award Winner Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchanan’s LPs, That’s What I’m Here For and Live Stock. Since then, with the Keystone Rhythm Band, the Billy Price Band, and solo projects, Billy Price has recorded and released a total of 16 albums, CDs, and DVDs. In 2016, he was officially recognized and inducted as a Pittsburgh Rock ’n Roll Legend at an award ceremony.

Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
RAJAS is a musical ensemble that explores the resonances among Indian music, jazz/creative music, and other improvisational traditions. Led by Maryland- raised mrudangam (South Indian percussion) artist and composer Rajna Swaminathan, the group is set to release their debut record, Of Agency and Abstraction April 26th, 2019, on Biophilia Records. Rajas is a Sanskrit word referring to the inner energy that compels us toward action, creation, and change. The Financial Times describes Rajna’s compositions for the ensemble as having “wedded beauty by courting chaos, with the methods of loose-knit latter-day jazz at the service of a recognizably South-Asian melody and pulse.”
