Vernon, so we are very excited to be invited to bring the game to Federal Hill!!We’ll be playing at MaGerk’s every Monday in the back bar. It’s free to play (of course), and like any good Trivia Night, we’ll have loads of food and drink specials. We will also have a prize for the best overall team, as well as one for the highest placing small team so it’s good for groups of all sizes. We’d love to have you join us, so definitely consider checking it out if you’re in or around Federal Hill on Monday’s.

Taste & Tour at the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion
6PM – 7PM
The Engineers Club
11 W Mount Vernon Pl, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett-Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our new Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail or sparkling water.

Short Films at the Charm City Fringe Festival
7PM – 9PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
What happens when you flip the script on the creative process? For the 2019 Short Film Program, Charm City Fringe procured a composer to create an 8 minute score, for a movie yet to be conceived. Eight minute score. No movie. Charm City Fringe then gave the score to 8 filmmakers who had to work backwards from the score to construct their movies. Eight different movies. Same score. For our filmmakers, we have an array of fantastic talent. Aaron Henkin (creator and producer of original radio programs, including Out of the Block, for WYPR) will be performing in one of this year’s films. We have IFP alumni, MdFF alumni, filmmakers with films on NoBudge, the founder of the Baltimore Filmmakers Collective, creators for Comedy Central, Adult Swim, Doc NYC, etc. Join us at the Creative Alliance on October 15 to see how 8 different creative minds interpreted the same sounds. Last year this program was a great success, where we had standing room only, so this year we moved it to a larger venue.

In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks at FPCT
Oct 11 – Nov 3, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Fells Point Corner Theatre
251 S Ann St, Baltimore
An unflinching and incendiary look at motherhood, race and poverty, In The Blood serves as a bold and challenging work by one of America’s greatest modern playwrights: Suzi Lori Parks. In this modern day riff on The Scarlet Letter, Hester, a young, homeless mother of five, must find a way to provide and protect for her children while living on the streets. While Hester’s children fill her life with joy — providing loving comedy in a harsh world of poverty — everyone else in her life takes everything they can. A parable of injustice and cruelty, this play stares into a story that the world all too often looks away from.

A Shayna Maidel by Barbara Lebow
Oct 18 – Nov 3, Fri & sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Strand Theater Company
5426 Harford Rd. Baltimore
The setting of the play is the stylish Manhattan apartment of Rose Weiss, the time 1946. Although born in Poland, Rose, now in her 20s, came to the United States with her father, Mordechai, at the age of four and is now completely “Americanized.” The plan had been for Rose’s mother and sister to join the others, but the sister fell ill with scarlet fever, the mother stayed on to care for her, and soon the rise of the Nazis cut off their escape. Their ordeal in the concentration camps, which only the sister survived, has brought a burden of guilt to the aging Mordechai and deeply mixed feelings as he awaits the arrival of his elder daughter, Lusia, who has, at last, found her way to America. With her halting English and old world ways Lusia is a striking contrast to Rose, who is somewhat embarrassed by her rediscovered sister’s presence, and fearful that it will threaten her own hard-won independence. Distraught, and concerned that she may never be reunited with her young husband, Lusia embraces a series of memories and fantasies which make real the joys and horrors of her life before the war, from which her father and sister were spared. But when Mordechai gives Rose a letter from her mother—a letter left many years earlier with a non-Jewish Polish friend—a “proof” of family is somehow restored, and old barriers and griefs give way to a renewed sense of hope and mutual dependence—and the conviction that a better future may yet arise from the bitter ashes of the troubled past.

Fells Point Corner Theatre

Mobtown Ballroom
861 Washington Blvd, Baltimore
October 18th and 19th features the Chelsea Reed 5-piece (Friday) and 9-piece (Saturday)–two incredible nights of dancing and jazz to celebrate one of the weirdest places in Baltimore.  We throw a lot crazy events here, and for our anniversary we’ve decided to blow the whole wad on an excellent band and two evenings of the finest dancing and drinking in Baltimore. While both nights will be open to the public and all are welcome, Friday night will be more of a classic Mobtown madhouse, and will include a drop-in beginner lesson at 8. Saturday, we will open the doors for an hour of toasts, stories, and memories at 8, with music and dancing at 9. We hope to make Saturday a night where our regulars can dance–with a little space–to a large band and also take a beat to appreciate the community that they’ve build here. Both nights, we intend to go late, late, late. Saturday, we request slightly more formal attire.

Lip-Schtick: One Boy’s Journey to Fabulous & Back!
8PM – 11PM
First Unitarian Church of Baltimore
10 W Franklin St, Baltimore
A dazzling one-man quick-change stage show straight from Provincetown! David “Scarbie” Mitchell evolves through 7 characters and 11 costume changes without ever leaving the stage. The process is fast-paced, set to music, and often hysterically “out of control.” Scarbie is an aging showgirl with a personality disorder. David grew up gay in a loving and supportive family environment. Other characters drift in and out of the action, adding whimsy, song, and pathos to the poignant storytelling. Lip-Schtick is primarily a comedy, with both lip-sync and live vocals (delivered with such flawless technique as to be nearly indistinguishable from each other) serving to blur the boundaries of reality as Scarbie changes characters and genders. Improvisational elements keep each performance fresh and spontaneous. (Audience members occasionally included in this improve!) Still, you can expect to leave with a tear in your eye after the moving final number. Lip-Schtick is a one-man tour de force suitable for all ages, lifestyles, genders, and abilities. This is a fundraiser for First Unitarian Church of Baltimore.
