Ottobar
2549 N Howard St, Baltimore
Unregistered Nurse Booking presents…
Girlpool (LA, CA), French VanillaSitcom, Cun Slub (members of SUN CLUB)
$12 adv./ $14 DOS all ages
As Girlpool, Harmony Trividad and Cleo Tucker have distilled the equipment necessary for a direct link between ear canal and heartstrings down to two members, two instruments, one cassette, one EP and one full-length album. That album, Before The World Was Big, is a lo-fi collection of punk songs that have a playful spirit but aren’t playing around. Trividad and Tucker specialize in no-frills singing and simple instrumentation that cut through bone and aim for marrow. The title track, in particular, features vocal harmonies that are almost startling in their poignancy and impact, bringing life to lyrics about memory and the loss of things remembered. Girlpool’s lack of polish does nothing to diminish its shine, and its free-spirited approach to punk only adds to the power behind their punch. —Katie Presley

Roni Stoneman is perhaps best loved for her roles on the hit show Hee Haw (rember the Ironing Board lady?). She is a monster banjo player and old school entertainer who learned the tricks of the trade as park of the Stoneman Family, one of the first family dynasties in country music. Roni was born in Maryland, the 17th child, and youngest daughter of music legend Earnest Van “Pop” Stoneman. Roni naturally became a member the family band, who with great success, toured all across the United States and Canada. The family gained national recognition with their own weekly television show, “The Stonemans”. Hearing Roni perform is always hillarius and amazing. For this show, she is backed by DC/VBaltimore “caveman” bluegrass band, Only Lonesome. It should be one heck of a night!

Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
LOOK WHO’S BACK!!? First Arbouretum club gig since 2013!
ArbouretumChris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, and Plow
For well over a decade, Arbouretum has been exploring vast stretches of musical terrain, releasing four full-length albums on Thrill Jockey Records to widespread acclaim, as well as several short-run collections. Their sound has been characterized as walking a line between heavy psychedelia, doom, and folk rock, though not without a singular uniqueness, a quality that led The Guardian to proclaim them to be “One of the most distinctive voices around”.  Arbouretum’s latest outing, Coming Out of the Fog, was released in 2013, supported by extensive touring both in the US and overseas. Since then, the band has for the most part retreated into the shadows, taking a step away from the spotlight to catch its collective breath and write and record new material. Audiences can plan on hearing freshly-invigorated takes on songs from their extensive back catalog, as well as ones that have yet to be heard by the world at large.

The action kicks off at 6p at the Gardens Ice House, one of Maryland’s premier skating arenas, located just 25 minutes from downtown Baltimore. Featuring amazing track views, spacious seating, full-service cafe, and a massive outdoor playground, it’s the ultimate indoor sports experience. Bring the family. Bring that special lady-friend or gentleman caller. Bring the whole damn city of Baltimore. We’ll bring a big ol’ maple syrup jug, filled to the brim with sweet, sweet ‘Merica!

Nyū Hāfu | Solo Exhibition by Kaita Niwa, Curated by Josh Nukem
7PM – 10PM
Terrault Contemporary
218 W. Saratoga St. 3rd Floor
Kaita Niwa (b. 1991, Nagoya, Japan) is a Japanese/American artist who uses digital, sculpture and videos in playfully ironic ways to explore how people create new meaning through online communication. Her work examines the process during which new images and symbols come together organically to gain legitimacy through a collective, shared understanding. The work in the show tells a deeply personal narrative but interjects playful moments of levity and humor. Having just begun hormone replacement therapy, her artistic practice is dedicated to confronting personal issues of gender identity and to lesser degrees that of her own race and sexuality. With the hope of reestablishing a relationship with her estranged sister, she is dedicating the upcoming show to her as a means of explaining and apologizing for her decade long emotional absence. She received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2015. Niwa is currently living and working in Baltimore, MD
