Degenerate Matter Vol.4: Descent to the Underworld
7PM – 10PM
The Windup Space
12 W North Ave, Baltimore
A night of dead poets in performance. Winter is coming and no amount of holiday cheer can mask the fact that it is the season of death, when Persephone returns to the underworld and the earth grows barren and cold, so join us as we too descend to the underworld to resurrect a few dead poets to warm and nourish the living.
How to participate:
Find a poem by a dead poet, memorize it if you like or just bring it along and read it as if your life depended upon it. (Normally we memorize the poems we perform, but since we are performing in the underworld this time we decided it would be appropriate to break the rules.)
Sign up: comment below with the name of the poet you are performing.
Or just come and watch. It’s free!  This edition of Degenerate Matter will feature Analog Players performing Ovid’s version of the Rape of Proserpina from Metamorphoses.

Winter Solstice in Patterson Park
6PM – 8PM
Patterson Park
Baltimore, Maryland
We welcome you to a celebration of the Winter Solstice in the bull ring in Patterson Park. December 21st is the shortest day and the longest night of the year and is symbolic on so many levels. The solstice could mark the beginning of something bad — winter is when things die, it’s cold, people grow sluggish and depressed. At the root of many ancient winter solstice ceremonies is the fear that the failing light will never return unless humans intervene with anxious vigil or antic celebration. This year, more than ever, we need to insure that the light will return! We will invite the sun back into the darkness, celebrate the natural process, create warm bonds with our friends and neighbors and express gratitude for the earth, the moon and the sun.
How can you intervene with us and shine light, warmth and peace?
• Bring a candle or a lantern and send a flame of light into the new solar year.
• Join us in the healing power of song. Are you a musician or do you know a musician? Bring your instrument, bring your voice and lead us in a lively round of “We wish you a Merry Solstice!”
• Bring sprigs of Mistletoe or Holly, both believed to hold magical powers because they can survive the winter months, and share them with your neighbors.
• Bring bells and noise makers! Each celebrant will be invited to express a wish for the planet for the coming year. After each one speaks, we’ll all ring bells together in affirmation.
• Give us your ideas and we will try to incorporate them into a new tradition that brings more peace and heart into the season and brings us closer to family, friends and neighbors. We need each other.

Steve Hung
9PM – 12AM
Rye Fells Point
1639 Thames St, Baltimore
Steve Hung is the latest addition to Baltimore’s music scene, with his recent transition from Austin, TX, dubbed “The Live Music Capital of the World.” He got his start at age 18, playing open mic at the legendary folk venue Cactus Café (Janis Joplin, Abra More, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen), soaking up the various sounds of Americana that permeate the Austin music scene. Steve quickly gained a reputation as “a killer guitar player” and “a Cactus favorite.”
Like other Texas musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and ZZ Top, Steve fuses blues riffs and licks into his guitar playing as well as playing folk and other forms of Americana music. However, over the years, Steve has broadened his musical vocabulary to incorporate Chet Atkins-style guitarwork, Jazz chordal flavoring, and the sensitivity of Spanish/Classical guitar, something he picked up recently while living in Baltimore

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is part of the Italian-American Christmas Eve celebration, although it’s not called by this name in Italy and is not a “feast” in the stricter sense of “holiday,” but a grand meal. Strictly speaking, Christmas Eve is a vigil or fasting day, and the abundance of seafood reflects the tradition of abstinence from red meat until the actual feast of Christmas Day itself. We are doing The Feast of Seven Fishes here at Birroteca Baltimore for the first time this year, and we would love all of you to join us in the celebration of everything seafood! We will be serving in addition to our regular menu a prefixed menu of seven seafood courses for $45 per person. Make your reservations on OpenTable.
