This is the first session in our free educational series “How To Vegan.” This workshop is for anyone who is looking to learn more about the benefits of the vegan lifestyle with regard to animal rights, environmental concerns, and personal health. You don’t need to be a vegan or vegetarian to attend–just have an open mind and questions.  In this introductory session, we will cover the basics of veganism, introduce ourselves, discuss local resources, answer any questions you may have, and prioritize future workshop topics based on interest (e.g. vegan convenience foods at the local supermarket, finding the right plant-based milk for every use, raising a vegan child, vegan meal planning, vegan cheese tasting, and the like). All ages are welcome, but there may be discussion of the cruel realities of animal agriculture depending on the questions that are asked. We believe it’s important to understand these for-profit government-subsidized industries and how they treat both animals and their human workers, so each person can make informed decisions regarding the food they eat and the companies they support. A big “thank you!” to Zeke’s Coffee–they are letting us use their location after hours for this event. Tom Grace presents Kent State: Death and Dissent in the Long 60s

Tom Grace, the author of Kent State: Death and Dissent in the Long Sixties will be speaking about his recent book published by the University of Massachusetts Press. The book examines the long prelude leading up to of the most searing incidents of American history during the Vietnam Era, the killing of four students and the wounding of nine others during an antiwar protest in May 1970. One critique described the study as “a systematic deconstruction of many media-generated myths” among them that the campus was without an activist tradition, that the National Guard members were young and inexperienced, and that the killings led to an end to the era of mass protest.
Taking issue with these myths, Grace shows that Kent State was not a tragic anomaly. Rather, the campus movement was grounded in a tradition of activism extending back to labor battles and civil rights protests of the 1950s. Thus the fatal shootings at Kent State were the culmination of a conflict between the forces of radicalism and repression that unfolded throughout the decade of the 1960s.
Thomas M. Grace, Ph.D., is the author of Kent State: Death and Dissent in the Long Sixties. He is an adjunct professor of American history at Erie Community College. He was among the thirteen students struck by the National Guard gunfire that killed four of his classmates.

He started playing drums in his high school marching band and switched to the trombone his senior year. Later he majored in music at Morgan state University. 4TAE launched his professional career in 2005 playing with the Eubie Blake legacy jazz band and Marcell and the Truth. He has opened up for various artists such as Anthony David, Anthony Hamilton, Algebra Blessett, and Lupe Fiasco. He also played along side artists such as jazz violinist Regina Carter and Raheem Devaughn. Along with the Trombone 4TAE plays piano bass guitar and is a producer. He is currently working on his debut EP “Blue hart”. His music is described as a smooth explosion of hip-hop and R&B. Music lovers will enjoy listening to the sexy smooth sounds of this new artist.

Mr. Parker will provide an overview of the park. Following, the panel will examine the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman and the ongoing preservation efforts of her Maryland birthplace. Jones from the Harlem Swing Dance Society to lead a FREE “Illustrated Jazz and dance Lecture” on the roots and fruits of Lindy Hop, one of America’s first dance forms. Paper Circuits & Pop Up Card Workshop

Valentine’s day is just around the corner. Show your friends and family how much you care by hand crafting your own Paper Circuit or Pop Up card. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make paper circuits using copper tape and electronic components. LEDs and other simple electronics can be added together to create greeting cards that light up and buzz. Participants will also learn different ways to engineer a pop up card, which can be combined with paper circuits to create an amazing piece of work to give or keep. Cost is $15 per person. There is no member discount for our workshop programs. All supplies and museum admission are included. The workshop is designed for ages 10 and up, anyone under 16 must participate with an adult. Fierce Chicks Rock Art Show

Please join us for the 5th annual Fierce Chicks Rock Art Show to benefit Moveable Feast. Over 20 of baltimore’s best artists will show work and donate a percentage of their proceeds to Moveable Feast. We will also have paintings, photography, works on paper, sculpture, and crafts. There will be snacks, refreshments and a Fierce Chicks Rock signature cocktail! Every year bike teams ride from Ocean City to Baltimore—140 miles over 2 days—in the Ride For The Feast to raise funds for Moveable Feast. Moveable Feast provides hot meals to folks with HIV/AIDS and other life threatening illnesses who live below poverty line. This service is free to the clients. Moveable Feast provides this service all over Maryland, a 140 mile radius that we represent by the distance of the Ride. Each rider must raise $1,500 in order to participate in the ride. Many of the riders on our team, Fierce Chicks Rock, are involved in the care of folks with HIV/AIDS either as nurses, physicians, dietitians or close friends of them. We are all passionate about Moveable Feast.

Love is in the air!! For the FIRST TIME EVER we are offering a Valentine’s Day Weekend Open Studio!!! Come visit us the Sunday before Valentine’s Day  and make yourself a Valentine’s Day present! Or send your special someone over with coffee and cash and let them have a blast designing their own flower arrangement. They can choose their own vase and their favorite flowers – eliminating all potential for disappointment! Please note: we will NOT have roses available. Roses are not grown locally at this time, therefore, we will not have them. We WILL have anemones, carnations, paperwhites, tulips, tropical foliage, and other surprises!  This is NOT a formal class. This is a time for self directed design with some coaching from our designers if necessary. We will provide flowers, vases and tools. Adults only please! You can make a wrapped bouquet for $30, a small vase arrangement for $30, a medium vase arrangement for $50 or a large vase arrangement for $75. Or, feel free to bring your own vase (pricing is subject to vase size). No need to RSVP! Come design your best Valentine’s Day flowers yet!! You know we’ll have some smooth love tunes blasting!

Kindness for Paws – Name your Donation Art Sale

The 4th annual Kindness for Paws – Name your Doantion Art Sale will take place on Sunday, February 12 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This animal welfare inspired art collection will consist of over 1000 pieces of original art created by local students from City Neighbors High School, Perry Hall Middle School, General John Striker Middle School, Middle River Middle School, Kingsville Elementary School and Grange Elementary School. Artwork will be viewable starting on Saturday, February 4th, but sales will only take place during the reception on Sunday, February 12th from 11 – 1. All proceeds from “Kindness For Paws” goes to support homeless pets at the Maryland SPCA.

Chocolate Through the Centuries

Chocolate has been an integral part of American history. Not only was the cocoa bean discovered in the Americas and brought to Europe by Columbus, but 17th and 18th-century Americans actually saw chocolate as an important part of their everyday diet. Culinary historian and writer Joyce White will explore the rich cultural history of chocolate from its ancient beginnings in Mesoamerica to the present day, with particular emphasis on how it was enjoyed by early Baltimoreans like Homewood’s Carroll family. The presentation will be followed by a hot chocolate reception. Participants will receive take-home samples of five historic chocolate preparations: a 17th-century Aztec-style hot drink, an 18th-century style tart, a 19th-century style Bangor Brownie, a 20th-century milk chocolate truffle and a 21st-century style chocolate incarnation.
