Things to do in Baltimore this week 3/19/18

Oh man, the next few weeks are going to be crazy packed for me with theatre, shows, and food events. I need a nap just thinking about it. This Friday I am super excited to attend Humbug: The Great P.T. Barnum Seance. It’s the last week to see it so get your tickets! What is more fun that a fake seance put on by a magician? This is an excellent opportunity to dip you toes into immersive theatre. On Saturday I’m attending Spring Break Cabaret! at Single Carrot Theatre. I’m a member there so I attend all the events and they are always so much fun. Too many options for Sunday and I’m having a hard time deciding.

I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support the Maryland SPCA. Please help support me in this important fundraiser by contributing generously. Whatever you can give will help – it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress. Donate Here! Also, please attend the Festival for the Animals on Saturday, May 5! It is the MDSPCA’s biggest fundraiser for the year!

Writers LIVE: Tom Pelton

A crossroads of life and culture, the Chesapeake Bay straddles the North and the South, mixes salt water with fresh, and is home to about 18 million people and 3,500 species of animals and plants. Although recent cleanup efforts have improved its overall health, they have not been enough to save this national treasure. In The Chesapeake in Focus, award-winning writer Tom Pelton examines which environmental policies have worked and which have failed. Based on Pelton’s extensive experience as a journalist and as the host of “The Environment in Focus” on WYPR, this sweeping book takes readers on a tour of the histories of the Chesapeake, as well as the ecological challenges faced by its major tributaries. It details the management of blue crabs. striped bass, and other delicious wildlife, profiles leaders and little-known characters involved in the restoration campaign, and warns of the dangers of anti-regulatory politics that threaten to reverse what has been accomplished. Looking to the future, Pelton offers a provocative vision of the hard steps that must be taken if we truly want to save the Bay.

You don’t have to know the book to enjoy the play adaptation by Sir Peter Hall, preeminent director, and playwright. Mar 9 – April 7
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company

“The Winter’s Tale” is Shakespeare’s dazzling fantasy about love’s enduring magic, celebrating springtime’s promise of renewal, rebirth, and second chances. The story unfolds like a medieval folk tale: an irrational king pays dearly and repents after abandoning his wife and infant. We follow the emotional journey of each character through the long, harsh winter of betrayal to a faraway springtime blossoming with the wondrous possibility of forgiveness and redemption. Along the way, there are both tears and laughter. Can what’s loved and lost be found? Find out. This is the play containing Shakespeare’s famous stage direction: “Exit, pursued by a bear.”
Performances March 9 through April 7, 2018, including a matinee on Easter Sunday. Appropriate for ages 10 and up (themes include death, birth).

Those of us who sat and listened were all literally spell bound. Hearing the banjo played in new ways and the use of the traditional Chinese violin played with stunning virtuosity with Jeff Berman’s dulcimer was just what the world needs to hear. This wasn’t cross-over or fusion. This was great music making that needs no label ,,,” — David Amram/ NERFA 2015

The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare
Mar 9 – April 7
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore

Through conversation, stories, sound, original illustrations by Baltimore artist Chelsea Demitras, and some accordion songs, this show explores the tricky landscape of reason and insanity. Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, past and present, BATS! connects an extra-ordinary personal narrative to a larger story: the all too ordinary madness of American culture.

The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare
Mar 9 – April 7
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore

Marquee Lounge at The Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Have you ever thought you would lose your mind? How do you know what is real? Did you know that a single bat can eat up to 1200 mosquitoes in an hour? BATS! is a mixed media, interactive contemplation on the nature of fear and madness. It is conceived and performed by Michele Minnick, created in collaboration with Submersive Productions.

Todd celebrates 30 years of telling jokes by doing a tour where he won’t be telling any jokes. That’s right, an entire show of riffing and bantering with the audience. New York City-based comedian and actor Todd Barry is renowned throughout the entertainment industry for his nuanced, measured, and thoroughly original approach to stand-up. Drawing audience members in with his deadpan self-deprecation and ability to pile punchline upon punchline, his decidedly low-key stage persona belies a deeply intelligent, often biting, occasionally absurdist worldview, one lauded by discerning fans who seek a fresh yet honest update to traditional observation and social commentary.
