Things to do in Baltimore this week 4/23/18

Oops, I did it again. I overbooked myself this week. I couldn’t help it, there were too many fun events to choose from. Of course I’ll be at Brews and Board Games at The Windup Space on Tuesday. I’ll be attending the world premiere and opening night of PETER PAN at Single Carrot Theatre on Friday. I can’t wait to tell you all about it. Hurry up and buy your tickets! Saturday I’ll be lounging on a blanket in the grass all day enjoying the 2018 Charm City Bluegrass Festival. Sunday I snagged some tickets to a tasting of Limited Release Mezcales at Clavel. I think I counted at least five different places you can go to a Drag Brunch on Sunday so if you haven’t been to one yet, now is your chance! The weather is finally indicative of Spring so its time to get your booty out of the house!

They won’t know what’s coming until you throw it their way, and then… well, then they’re just going to live truthfully. Acting! “Given Circumstances” is part of The BIG Lab – Every Wednesday night our comedy scientists take their newest experiments to the stage for further testing. The results may be explosive.

Free Film at the Parkway: Agnès Varda’s Le Bonheur
7:30PM – 9PM
The SNF Parkway / Maryland Film Festival
5 West North Avenue, Baltimore
Agnès Varda’s classic film on the historic big screen of the Parkway — for free! ABOUT THE FILM: Though married to the good-natured, beautiful Thérèse (Claire Drouot), young husband and father François (Jean-Claude Drouot) finds himself falling unquestioningly into an affair with an attractive postal worker. One of Agnès Varda’s most provocative films, LE BONHEUR examines, with a deceptively cheery palette and the spirited strains of Mozart, the ideas of fidelity and happiness in a modern, self-centered world. Agnès Varda wrote that she had envisioned the film as “a beautiful summer fruit with a worm inside.”

Michael Feinberg just released his brand new album, Whatever Possessed Me. Whatever Possessed Me demonstrates everything Feinberg loves about jazz. It’s eclectic yet specific, swinging yet searching, deep and rich, but all the while full of emotion, spirituality, and conversation between brothers. On it, Michael showcases the mature and unique sound he has already cultivated during his short time on the New York City jazz scene. As a bassist, he exemplifies total control and comfort with his craft. As a bandleader, he pushes himself and his quartet sound to dizzying heights, playing with rhythms and textures as only a bass player can know how. The result is something that is at once both polished and edgy.

Moving Walls
Saturday April 28, 8pm, Sunday April 29, 7pm
Thursday May 3, 8pm, Saturday May 5, 8pm
The Peale Center
225 N Holliday St, Baltimore
Moving Walls is an experimental dance piece that examines human experience in relation to architecture. Combining movement with sculpture, animation, and sound, the piece is a collaborative project that questions our concepts of stability. With wheels, ropes, pulleys, hooks, and hinges, three performers construct and deconstruct the space around them. In turn, they are influenced by their shifting surroundings. Audience members are invited to explore their own unique perspectives of Moving Walls by passing freely throughout different rooms of The Peale Center. The Peale’s rich and complex history of preservation, including former exhibitions on taxidermy and the building’s own physical restoration, provides a visual and conceptual framework for the performance.

While DJing in Chicago, Philly, NYC, and DC, DJ Diaspora developed her eclectic blend of broken beat with Afrobeat, Latin beat, deep house, Brazilian jazz, disco, drum ‘n bass/jungle, and nujazz, with a focus on the African diaspora (which most of broken beat’s UK originators are from). DJ Diaspora has had the honor of opening for innovative artists such as Femi Kuti and the Positive Force and DJ Rekha of Basement Bhangra.
