Things to do in Baltimore this week 10/1/18

Okay, so I’m almost settled in after the move. This week I’m trying to catch up on all the theatre I’ve missed the past few weeks. I’m also attending a party hosted by Baltimore Rock Opera Society on Friday but it’s by invite only. You should become a member or donate and then you too can attend awesome BROS parties. Doors Open Baltimore is Saturday and Sunday, totally recommend you check it out. You get to see inside a lot of awesome and beautiful buildings all over Baltimore. Phew, I’m exhausted just thinking about all of my plans for this week.

Captivating, endearingly optimistic and magical at times, Steven Spielberg’s fantasy about a stranded alien from outer space protected by three kids until it can arrange for passage home….is not first and foremost an effects picture, but rather a charming ‘Twilight Zone’-like fable which reminds by turns of ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘Mary Poppins,’ a benign switch on ‘King Kong’ and a variation of Spielberg’s own ‘Close Encounters.’” (Variety)

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Please bring at least one friend. Bring as many as you can. Tell your friends to bring a friend and spread the word. The 8×10 loves Open Mic Night. However we can’t lose money hosting it. Try to get as many people as you can to come have fun the First Tuesday of Every Month.

Afro Punk Ballet
Oct 4-6, 8PM – 10PM
The Peale Center
225 N Holliday St, Baltimore
Levi, a brilliant military scientist with a unique spiritual knowledge of space and time creates a second sun. The unprecedented devastation of his sun brings the nation’s inhabitants near extinction. Levi’s unwillingness to face the realities of his creation, leaves his eldest daughter and successor, Corfaszia, to restore order to the land. Jakub, the younger of the two daughters, with a deep connection to the spirit world, is forced into exile. Afro Punk Ballet is an exploration of the crossroads between African spirituality, mathematics, and physics, poetically weaving “time and space” within the movement and music. Inspired by the experience of spiritual possession in the black southern gospel tradition and similar experiences within the Afro Punk Movement, this piece utilizes a soundscape that encompasses the styles of punk music, 20th century French music, and southern gospel music. With contemporary ballet’s use of abstraction, the world of Afro Punk Ballet is futuristic and mythical. By using the grandeur of opera and ballet, this piece strives to tell an epic story that challenges popular notions of heroism, morality and futurism.

It is Germany, 1891, a world where the grown-ups hold all the cards. The beautiful young Wendla explores the mysteries of her body and wonders aloud where babies come from… until Mama tells her to shut it and put on a proper dress. Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy, Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty that he can’t concentrate on anything… not that the Headmaster cares. He strikes them both and tells them to turn in their lesson. One afternoon, in a private place in the woods, Melchior and Wendla meet by accident and soon find within themselves a desire unlike anything they’ve ever felt. As they fumble their way into one another’s arms, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. When even his one adult friend, Melchior’s mother, ignores his plea for help, he is left so distraught that he can’t hear the promise of life offered by his outcast friend, Ilse. Naturally, the Headmasters waste no time in pinning the “crime” of Moritz’s suicide on Melchior to expel him. And soon, Mama learns that her little Wendla is pregnant. Now the young lovers must struggle against all odds to build a world together for their child.

Lysistrata. . . a play for the 21st Century!
Sep 21-Oct 14, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Lysistrata, originally written and performed in 411 BCE, is considered by many to be the greatest work of the ancient comic playwright Aristophanes. In the play, as part of her extraordinary mission to stop a grinding, never‑ending war, Athenian matron Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sex and to capture the Acropolis, thus bankrupting the war effort and reducing men to comic deprived desperation. Bawdy, unrestrained and surprisingly modern in its world view, Lysistrata is performed in a recent translation by Sarah Ruden that critics call “a perfect Lysistrata for the new millennium.”

She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith
Sep 28-Oct 21
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore
Kate Hardcastle has a love problem: Her prospective fiancé is tongue-tied around women of high class but a charmer with the help. Silliness and satire follow when he mistakes Miss Hardcastle for a serving maid – and she decides to play along. Enjoy witty and warm comic feast of practical jokes and romantic mix-ups. First performed in 1773, She Stoops to Conquer broke new ground, steering British comedy away from the sentimental or genteel, and giving the audience a “low” or “laughing comedy” that skewered society’s pretensions. A young lady of country upbringing is the heroine, outwitting city folk and her scheming elders. In that bygone era before a lady could get a background check of her suitor through Google, charming Miss Hardcastle goes undercover to learn more about Marlow, the man her dad hopes she’ll marry. A smash hit at its debut, She Stoops to Conquer still delivers the laughs.

7:30PM – 10PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
So begins the story of We’re About 9. Brian and Katie’s weekly open mic at the Jahva House in Ellicott City, MD captured the attention of the Sheriff’s Department not for disorderliness, but rather for regularly breaking fire codes with attendance flooding both floors of the cafe and spilling out into the street. After the open mic ended each week, the music would continue outside in the parking lot. It was in the magical location of Parkling Lot D that Katie Graybeal, Brian Gundersdorf, and Pat Klink first started sculpting their distinctive vocal harmony arrangements.

Spring Awakening
Oct 4-20, 8PM – 10:30PM
Area 405
405 E Oliver St, Baltimore

She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith
Sep 28-Oct 21
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore

In that bygone era before a lady could get a background check of her suitor through Google, charming Miss Hardcastle goes undercover to learn more about Marlow, the man her dad hopes she’ll marry. A smash hit at its debut, She Stoops to Conquer still delivers the laughs.

It’s everything you’ve come to expect from one of TV’s longest running franchises: A cynical detective quipping over a corpse, people who don’t let police interviews stop their repetitive activities, witnesses with staggeringly detailed memories; and it is all improvised. We take you from the discovery of the body through the investigation, trial, and all the way to wrapping things up with a few jaded comments from the D.A. over a shared Scotch. All BIG Shows are FREE! But please reserve so we know you’re coming!
