Okay, it officially feels like Fall. I took a stroll around Mt. Vernon while drinking a latte this morning and it was pretty much the best. I haven’t figured out my full schedule of events this week. I’m, for sure going to An Evening with Samantha Smiertka of Crow Winery & Farm at Schola on Monday, though. No Baltimore fun for me this weekend, I’ll be wandering around New York City instead. New York in the Fall is my favorite so I have to get up there at least once. Have fun, friends, and enjoy this lovely weather!

An Evening with Samantha Smiertka of Crow Winery & Farm, Eastern Shore, MD
6PM – 9PM
Schola
916 North Charles Street, Baltimore
Crow Vineyard & Winery is located on Maryland’s Eastern shore 10 minutes north of historic Chestertown. As an award-winning winery and year round tourism venue, Crow is helping to shape a wine country of note for Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Owners Roy and Judy Crow say “Staying authentic affects everything we do, grow and produce at our farm vineyard and winery – our farm soils are rich with time our hospitality true and our wines distinctive with terroir. Being truly authentic these days is a hard thing to achieve but we think we’re close.” Along with their meticulous vineyards, they mange a herd of Angus grass-fed beef, the perfect combination for our cooking class!! Join us as we craft some local favorites that compliment these local wines. We’ll start with Crow’s sparkling Vidal as Samantha welcomes the class. We’d be remiss to not make a Maryland Crab cake with tomato and corn salsa to go with their Vidal Blanc…we’ll bring in some Italian influence by making some fresh pasta and a sauce with their ground Angus beef to go with their Barbera and braise some Angus beef with fall greens to go with their Merlot. To finish the night we’ll bake ginger cakes and celebrate the heritage of our Eastern Shore. $75.

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Motor House
120 W North Ave, Baltimore
Join us for a night of exploring our own stories-from how we can record them to how reflecting on them can bring about positive change in our lives. Art-activist, author, former NFL player, and educator Aaron Maybin joins us to share his own story of re-writing his narrative and to guide us as we start on our own writing journeys. Bring writing materials and a curious, inquisitive, and open mind. Aaron recently published “Art-Activism: The Revolutionary Art, Poetry, & Reflections of Aaron Maybin” Here’s more about that work: Aaron Maybin is barely 30 years old and yet he has lived a number of experiences that make both his work and his thinking far beyond his years. Maybin, a former NFL first round draft pick, artist, writer, father, and teacher offers critiques and analysis on the church, politics, education policy, and criminal justice reform just to name a few, through a lens of a young man coming of age at a period in America’s history as pivotal as the Civil Rights era of the 1960’s. A native of Baltimore, Aaron was front and center when his hometown erupted into chaos following the death of a young man in police custody.

Baltimore Theatre Project

DIRTY PICTURES is a bawdy stage comedy about four lives transformed by the discovery of 21 shocking photographs. One night in a Colorado roadhouse, in the depths of the Reagan recession, four lonely lives are transformed by the discovery of 21 nudie snapshots. Judy, the sharp-witted bartender, never lets her disability get in the way of what she wants—except when it comes to her boss, Dan, a big-hearted guy with no head for business, who is busy working out his issues—once again—with his girlfriend Bonnie, a waitress so comely that guys give her $10 tips just for wiping up the beer she spills on them. Only Chet, a steady customer, gives Judy a second look, but she’s got no interest in an out-of-work meatpacker who imagines himself the next Ansel Adams. It all comes to blows one Monday night when Judy decides to make her play, unaware Chet has cooked up a convoluted scheme to woo her that involves a clandestine photo session with Bonnie and a secret trade for a classic motorcycle. A deceptively subversive small cast comedy stage play about redefining beauty in an image-obsessed culture.

It is Germany, 1891, a world where the grown-ups hold all the cards. The beautiful young Wendla explores the mysteries of her body and wonders aloud where babies come from… until Mama tells her to shut it and put on a proper dress. Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy, Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty that he can’t concentrate on anything… not that the Headmaster cares. He strikes them both and tells them to turn in their lesson. One afternoon, in a private place in the woods, Melchior and Wendla meet by accident and soon find within themselves a desire unlike anything they’ve ever felt. As they fumble their way into one another’s arms, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. When even his one adult friend, Melchior’s mother, ignores his plea for help, he is left so distraught that he can’t hear the promise of life offered by his outcast friend, Ilse. Naturally, the Headmasters waste no time in pinning the “crime” of Moritz’s suicide on Melchior to expel him. And soon, Mama learns that her little Wendla is pregnant. Now the young lovers must struggle against all odds to build a world together for their child.

Oct 4-20, 8PM – 10:30PM
Area 405
405 E Oliver St, Baltimore

Dirty Pictures by D.W. Gregory – world premiere

Baltimore Theatre Project
45 W Preston St, Baltimore

She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith
Sep 28-Oct 21
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company
7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore
Kate Hardcastle has a love problem: Her prospective fiancé is tongue-tied around women of high class but a charmer with the help. Silliness and satire follow when he mistakes Miss Hardcastle for a serving maid – and she decides to play along. Enjoy witty and warm comic feast of practical jokes and romantic mix-ups. First performed in 1773, She Stoops to Conquer broke new ground, steering British comedy away from the sentimental or genteel, and giving the audience a “low” or “laughing comedy” that skewered society’s pretensions. A young lady of country upbringing is the heroine, outwitting city folk and her scheming elders. In that bygone era before a lady could get a background check of her suitor through Google, charming Miss Hardcastle goes undercover to learn more about Marlow, the man her dad hopes she’ll marry. A smash hit at its debut, She Stoops to Conquer still delivers the laughs.

io & Titan (Brooklyn) the moniker of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Schlatter. His debut EP “a dream of Two moons” is a soulful take on Art Pop — a combination of melodic songcraft with a dense sound of rhythmic layering informed by music from all around the world. With shades of Paul Simon, Dirty Projectors, and Elliott Smith, the inventive arrangements of io & Titan push boundaries in many genres, without squarely falling into any of them. In his live set, Schlatter shows his mutli-instrumental genius and technical wizardry to recreate the full, layered sound entirely on his own.

Flip LeVay’s girlfriend Kimber, a WASP (in her own words) who works with inner-city school children, seems to fit in well with the upper-class family. Dirty Pictures by D.W. Gregory – world premiere

Baltimore Theatre Project
45 W Preston St, Baltimore

Our original award-winning all ages walking tour is the Original Fells Point Ghost Walk Tour, running since 2001! Picture Fell’s Point, in Baltimore, Maryland, as it was, a rowdy seaport town, the birthplace of the sleek and dangerous clipper ship. Its streets were full of sailors from foreign lands spilling off ships, immigrants anxious to start a new life, and ladies of the night looking to make ends meet. Given this explosive combination, is it any wonder that many ghosts remained behind?
