Things to do in Baltimore this week 10/29/18

Did you survive unofficial Halloween weekend? Perhaps that is why this is posting a little late today. I’m attending events hosted by two of my favorite organizations this week. On Halloween I’m going to Lurid Happenings: A Night of Mischief and Devilry by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society at The Peale Center.  I cannot wait! BROS always puts on the best parties and shows. It’s going to be a great time. Then for the next 11 days, my heart belongs to the Charm City Fringe Festival. Thursday is the Charm City Fringe Festival Opening Party so you know I’ll be there. The actual shows begin on Friday and run through the 11th. I’ve obtained an All Access Pass this year and have mapped out my schedule so I can see 20 shows. Want to copy my schedule? Send me an email and I’m happy to share it with you. Fringe is a great opportunity to check out unusual and interesting theatre and it takes place in the heart of the Bromo Arts District. It’s a do not miss event that I highly recommend.

John Carpenter’s The Fog at the Senator
7:30PM – 9PM
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Rd, Baltimore
The Fog’ will disappoint those expecting a re-run of the creepy scares from ‘Halloween’. Instead, expanding enormously on the fantasy elements of his earlier films, Carpenter has turned in a full-scale thriller of the supernatural, as a sinister fog bank comes rolling in off the sea to take revenge on the smug little town of Antonio Bay, N. Calif. No shotguns pumping; no prowling of dark corners; no tricksy dry-ice chills. Instead you’ll find a masterful simplicity of style, a lonely and determined group of characters under siege, and a childlike sense of brooding fear that almost disappeared in the ’70s. Carpenter’s confidence is outrageous; the range of his models even more so (from Poe to RKO); and the achievement is all his own, despite ragged moments and occasional hesitations.

BIG Time with Lisa Simeone
8PM – 9PM
The BIG Theater
1727 North Charles Street, Baltimore
BIG Time – How do you know when you’ve truly succeeded? The answer is when the Baltimore Improv Group invites you to have your life memorialized in a series of made up, totally unprepared comedy scenes celebrating you! Come join a hand picked cast of BIG’s best improvisers as they comedically revere some of Baltimore’s most important movers and shakers. Lisa Simeone has been working in public radio, local and national, for 35 years. She has hosted Weekend All Things Considered, Weekend Edition Sunday, Performance Today, World of Opera, Soundprint, the Metropolitan Opera, and countless live specials. Lisa began her career at WBJC in Baltimore, and then worked at WETA in Washington, D.C. After that, during her ten years at Baltimore’s WJHU, she developed a loyal following for her unusual mix of programming — classical, folk, and jazz, along with provocative reports, interviews, and call-in shows on a wide variety of subjects, everything from anthropology to neuroscience to philosophy to media criticism. (But she confesses that her favorite reports were on bocce, The Hon Man of Baltimore, and the virtues of a well-fitting bra!). After being blacklisted by NPR in October 2011 for her political activities, she managed to hang onto a few radio gigs — hosting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra series, At the Opera, and the Spoleto Chamber Music Festival. She has written feature articles, book reviews, and op-eds for Style Magazine, Urbanite, City Paper, and the Baltimore Sun. She’s a 1980 graduate of St. John’s College in Annapolis and received her M.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1997. She lives in Charles Village. All BIG Shows are FREE! But please RSVP!

Letitia VanSant at Music on the Square
8PM – 9PM
Music on the Square
1025 South Potomac St., Baltimore
This month’s concert: Baltimore’s own Letitia VanSant brings a trio to the beautiful sanctuary at Church on the Square. Guitars, upright bass and sweet singing about our troubled times. Join us for an intimate concert. Snacks and refreshments on offer and room to dance, too! Letitia VanSant’s lyrics are at once personally and politically relevant. Hailed as one of Baltimore’s strongest songwriters (BmoreArt), her distinct voice is fortified by sparse indie folk and Americana arrangements provided by Alex Lacquement on upright bass (Bumper Jacksons, Charm City Junction) and David McKindley-Ward on guitar and bouzouki. This concert is generously sponsored by Southern Provisions!

Be More Grateful
10AM – 12PM
R. House
301 W 29th St, Baltimore
Join Bmore Babes at R. House the Sunday before election day – to write letters of gratitude to Dr. Blasey-Ford, and anyone else who you are grateful for. Anita Hill was quoted in TIME Magazine 2011 that she received well over 25,000 letters of gratitude for her testimony. Women across the nation have been writing Thank-You notes to Doctor Ford via her Representative Anna Eshoo and Palo Alto University. For some, writing letters to Ford is a way of assuring her that her testimony did have an impact, even if it wasn’t the one some of her supporters hoped for. “I wanted her to know that she wasn’t alone up there,” one woman said. “I didn’t want her to think it was all for naught.” Let’s join them in making our American Hero know the impact she made. Please feel free to write more than one thank-you note. There are so many people who have made impacts on our lives both personally and on a greater scale. Say thank you to them. November is a month for gratitude and we want to express it together. We will also be hosting a clothing drive to help benefit our community as we clean out our closets for cooler months and think of those who might be in need. Please bring any clothing donations you may have to the meetup and Bmore Babes will gladly donate them for you.
