Hi friends! It’s officially summer in Baltimore. Lots of outdoor activities for those of you who can tolerate the heat. I’m busy this week hosting a 2-day private event at Schola with The Wine and Food Society of Baltimore. As always, if you are interested in checking out an IWFSB event or joining, let me know, it’s by invite only. The rest of the week I’ll be trying to stay cool and preparing for a week at the beach for July 4th. I feel like I’ve been so busy since we got back from Italy that I haven’t gotten to have dinner with friends and share all the awesome wine we bought. I’ll be taking it easy on events for the next few weeks to spend time with my Baltimore family.

In 2016 Thomas finally put together some of his favorite musicians to form a band of his own. The members are award winning, well-known Swedish musicians. They have performed and recorded with artists like Django Bates, Uri Caine, Filip Jers and Loney dear. Elements of bebop and free jazz as much as from hiphop, indie pop and chamber music appears in the music. A pioneering, unique and ”outside the box”-band in the jazzgenre today.

June Taste & Tour
6PM – 7PM
The Engineers Club
11 West Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail or sparkling water.

D. Watkins in conversation with Lisa Snowden-McCray
7PM – 9PM
Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse
1225 Cathedral St, Baltimore
Five years ago, in June of 2014, 10 months before the Uprising, D. Watkins was still on the come up, a freelance essay writer grinding towards success. His viral essay “Too Poor for Pop Culture” had dropped earlier in 2014, putting him on the map for a local and national audience for the first time. Red Emma’s had the honor to partner with D. on his first print publication, a zine version of this essay and a few others. At the time, we wrote that “D. Watkins’ essays for Salon and elsewhere, chronicling the struggles and hustles of Black Baltimore and his own trajectory from street dealer to creative writer, are no doubt the first shots fired by a major literary talent in the making.” Turns out this was a fair assessment. With his third book in five years out, writing in the New York Times, and a high-profile gig as a regular Salon columnist and videomaker, D. is a voice to be reckoned with, and one who has studiously made a point of using his success to lift up new rising voices from Baltimore’s streets. To mark the fifth anniversary of his first print publication, D.’s coming to Red Emma’s for a conversation with the essential Lisa Snowden-McCray of the Baltimore Beat for a conversation about what’s changed, what remains to change, and how his new book We Speak for Ourselves fits into this picture.
