Things to do in Baltimore this week 8/12/19

This summer is just flying by and I feel like I’ve been very busy. I’m using this week to catch up with all the friends I’ve promised to meet for dinner. Aligning calendars as an adult is darn near impossible but this is the magic week. Besides getting together with my friends I’ve just made plans for Saturday. I’m attending Single Carrot Theatre‘s Wet Hot American Summer – A Staged Reading at Peabody Heights Brewery. Don’t judge me but I had to watch the movie last night because I’ve never seen it before. What kind of fun will you get into this week?

Crusade – a world premiere play by Bruce Bonafede
Aug 9 – 18, Thurs – Sat 8PM, Sun 3PM
Baltimore Theatre Project
45 W Preston St, Baltimore
The third show of Rapid Lemon Productions’ 2019 “Season of Belief” is a collaboration with the Baltimore Playwrights Festival: CRUSADE, a world premiere by local playwright Bruce Bonafede. It is the future. The takeover of the federal government by Christian fundamentalists, and their assault on the Constitution, has led to civil war between opposing elements of the U.S. military. On reconnaissance patrol in the Rocky Mountains, an Army squad is forced to take cover in an isolated cabin owned by a former professor who now wants only to be left alone. The four members of the squad each have their own reason for being part of the anti-Christian resistance, including the squad’s female member, an expert sniper on a personal mission of vengeance. The situation is complicated when the squad captures a Christian deserter, and further complicated when their initial intention to take him back for interrogation is upended by their discovery that enemy troops are moving into the valley in overwhelming force, clearly in preparation for an attack on their base. This chain of events tests their character and is resolved in a moment of violence that seals their fate.

Love Letters – a Fund Raiser for Spotlighters!
Aug 2 – 18, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools”. While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave to, each other over the years—physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be.

The answer is when the Baltimore Improv Group invites you to have your life memorialized in a series of made up, totally unprepared comedy scenes celebrating you! Voted Baltimore’s Best Solo Music Artist in 2003, Melissa has performed with Scapegoat, Flo, The Swingin’s Swamis, Umami, The Little Prince and her newest duo, Twinkle. Join us this summer for a production unlike anything we have ever done before. Little does he know that his plant will develop a soulful R&B voice and an unquenchable thirst for human flesh. Featuring gospel, pop, and rock as only ArtsCentric can do, this reimagined immersive production is not one to be missed. Get your tickets early for this one. They are sure to be gone fast.
