Since transitioning to locally-milled flour in our pizza dough, we’ve opened a pandora’s box of lesser-known grains grown by hard-working and responsible Maryland farmers. These are the staple foods of traditional diets and offer a richness of flavor and character unmatched by mass-produced alternatives. On this night, we’ll work to elevate grains like farro, cornmeal and rye from Migrash Farm and arborio rice from Next Step Produce by pairing them with game meats from The Huntsman Specialty Meats in Lorton, VA. The Huntsman, who works with the best restaurants in D.C., will bring us fresh venison and quail; both more flavorful and nutrient-dense than typical agricultural products. There’s nothing better than working with the best raw ingredients we can find. On the beverage side, and staying true to the ‘best-of-the-best’ theme, we’re beyond excited to collaborate with WhistePig Whiskey for the evening. He has received the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, a Hodder Fellowship, a Stegner Fellowship, a Discovery/The Nation Prize, a Fulbright Scholarship to Northern Ireland, and a Visiting Fellowship at Exeter College, Oxford. Arthur lives in Baltimore, where he teaches in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. George David Clark’s Reveille (Arkansas, 2015) won the Miller Williams Prize and his recent poems can be found in AGNI, The Georgia Review, The Gettysburg Review, Ecotone, The Southern Review, and elsewhere. The editor of 32 Poems, he teaches creative writing at Washington and Jefferson College and lives in western Pennsylvania with his wife and their four young children.

Gaetano Donizetti was particularly entranced with the Tudor period of English history, and its queens in particular. Anna Bolena, about King Henry VIII’s second wife Anne Boleyn, was the first opera in the series referred to as “the Three Donizetti Queens.” A powerhouse soprano role, Anna stands at the center of a whirlwind of intrigue, infidelity, and torture. She is betrayed by the King’s appetites and the machinations of the men around her, and the opera documents Anna’s inevitable progression to the Tower of London and her ultimate execution in true bel canto style. Feel free to bring your own equipment! Join paranormal investigator and author Vince Wilson as he researches the haunted history of The Lord Baltimore Hotel! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Lord Baltimore Hotel is a 23-story French Renaissance hotel which stands 289 feet tall. It is the largest hotel in Maryland, located downtown, it’s an ideal place for business travelers, as well as people who are seeking respite from the many demands of life…and death! The Lord Baltimore hotel is rife with reports of ghosts. There is the ghost of the young girl who is continuously seen on the hotel’s 19th floor and even in the ballroom. She is often seen in her long, cream dress and black shoes playing with her red bouncing ball. Employees have seen the ghost of the little girl, as well as the ghosts of two adults. Sometimes, the little girl can be seen screaming, crying and rocking herself back and forth. There is talk of a young girl’s suicide on the 19th floor. It is said that the hotel’s elevators make constant trips to the 19th floor at night even when no one is ringing the bell. People have reported being touched by unseen hands in the elevator, as well as the lobby. Guests who are sensitive to the paranormal have reported waking up with nightmares. They have also complained about an unseen presence lingering in their rooms whilst they sleep.

Maryland on Film VI: Look Before You Leap Year Edition

Join us on February 29 as Enoch Pratt Free Library/State Library Resource Center partners with the Maryland Historical Society to host “Maryand On Film VI” a glimpse back at the people and places of Maryland’s past, showcasing what “things used to look like” from as far back as the 1920s up through the ’90s. “Maryland On Film” will present a number of historically significant short films and commercials from the Pratt and Maryland Historical Society collections, including their collaborative restoration of the 1939 Lowell Thomas-narrated travelogue, Baltimore: Modern City of Charm and Distinction. Pratt Library is proud to premier two 16mm films – Angela Mays’ Stick Him (1978) and Robert Cole’s Market (1980) – that were recently preserved by a federally-funded grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) and digitized by Colorlab, in Rockville, Md., to ensure that this footage will be available to future generations. Stick Him profiles legendary Baltimore boxing trainer Mac Lewis, while Market documents a busy day in 1980 at South Baltimore’s Cross Street Market.

Kick off your Sunday right! Grab your yoga mat and come join us at the distillery. You’ll start your time here getting a brief 15-minute “sneak peek” tour of part of the distillery. The yoga class will then begin in our processing room where you will be surrounded by the amazing aromas of our whiskey. A local instructor will take you through a yoga class that will unwind you and prepare you for the day ahead. Following the class, each guest will get a sample of one of our signature cocktails made with our Rye Whiskey. Get ready to unwind and relax!

Caffé Letterario Speaker Series: Michael Scott

Michael is a social impact investor, philanthropic advancement consultant and a recovering merchant banker. A systems thinker and applied complexity science practitioner, he also supports engaging productively and humanistically in issues of countering racism and supporting human rights to increase societal and individual equity (Quantum Social Science). As a community centered intelligence operative he uses story and cultural approaches to coach clients and community towards the ends of (Re)establishing and reinforcing a three centuries old legacy in supporting freedom everywhere that started in the center of the underground railroad in central Maryland.

The Acme Corporation, Baltimore’s premiere experimental theatre company, and Horse Lords, beloved avant-garde rock band, will pool their talents to create a new opera entitled The First Thing That Happens. Combining the ability of both groups to produce incomprehensible and beautiful work, this new piece will explore the human tendency towards recognition and comprehension, despite the near impossibility of accurately conveying thought and emotion.
