Things to do in Baltimore this week 8/29

Hello friends!  I don’t know about you but I am over the hot weather.  Lots of indoor activities available this week.  Baltimore’s vibrant music scene kind of blows me away when I compile this every week.  You can basically see a show of any genre every night of the week.  Impressive and also, it gives you zero excuse to not be out there.

Monday, August 29

Choreographers have three rules to follow: the work must be under five minutes long, be created in five rehearsals or less, and if applicable, stick to the prompt/idea given to them by one of the local commissioners. Similar to a short film or the increasingly popular digital shorts, SHORTS creates a concert of dance “hors d’oeuvres” that are eclectic, entertaining, and sometimes experimental in nature accompanied by a variety of musical sources. Opening Reception for Thalia Scagliola’s 3:33:33
7PM – 11PM
The Alchemy of Art
1637 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Please help welcome Thalia Scagliola and her series 3:33:33. Her work is centered on examining obsessive tendencies. She makes performance videos depicting herself in a broad range of conditions. The inherent need to record and observe takes precedence over the content. To relate the estrangement she experiences to the viewer, the footage is broken into hundreds of clips, reordered, and then layered. The 33 layers of footage emphasize these obsessive examinations. The footage is paused at 3 minutes, 33 seconds, and 33 frames, providing the viewer with a moment of pause. The number 3 as well as its multiples, references the infancy of these tendencies, which is rooted in her childhood. Driven by her habitual nature, physical processes such as screen-printing are introduced, providing further departure through increased objectivity. The original imagery is broken down through successive layers. Every layer is different from another and never repeated. Use of color reflects the departure occurring from the original footage. Influenced by cybernetic art, performance art, chance operations, and systems art, Thalia’s work focuses on obsessive tendencies, and the altered perceptions developed through compulsion.

June Star Simple Truths Re-Release! w/ Herd of Main Street, Chris Rattie and the Brush Valley Rumblers, and the Mark McKay Band
8PM – 12AM
The Windup Space
12 W North Ave, Baltimore
June Star – Somewhere around September 2014 June Star released an acoustic based record, Simple Truths… it went mostly unnoticed… however, June Star drummer, Kurt Celtnieks noticed that there weren’t any drums or bass on the record… fast forward to 2016… Kurt was talking smack… Grimm challenged him to put his drums where is mouth is… and he did… the result was a fresh new record… mixed by J Robbins at Magpie Cage
Herd of Main Street – Ragged, true songs coming from a life time of listening to records and staying up late playing guitars… and harmonica! Lots of harmonica… like smart harmonica… not John Popper harmonica… harmonica you can deal with. Harmonica.
Mark McKay Band (featuring Eric “Roscoe” Ambel) –  McKay has been rolling between Frederick MD and NYC for about a decade now… delivering his own brand of “Americana with a surreal twist.” Joining him on guitar this night is the well revered guitarist and producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel.
Chris Rattie and The Brush Valley Rumblers – All the way from State College, PA! Rusted songs sung from the corner of depth and truth… Chris is a top notch songwriter who understands where he has been and why he won’t go there again… Americana at its finest.
