Poe in Baltimore & Beyond features highlights from the Susan Jaffe Tane Collection of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the finest private collections of Poe materials in the world.

Top of the World Observation-Level Gallery hosts an opening reception for “Portrait Garden,” a solo exhibition by Lynn Cazabon. This exhibition is on view October 1, 2016 through the end of September 2017. At the opening reception guests have the chance to enjoy light refreshments, meet the artists, and view the exhibits. Please arrive by 7pm to be guaranteed entry to Top of the World. Free to all. Portrait Garden is a literal and metaphorical garden of ‘portraits’ of eleven women incarcerated at Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, MD. These ‘portraits’ consist of photographic images of plants—selected to represent each woman—along with audio interviews in which the women discuss their plant choices and their experiences with gardening past and present. The project is the result of an exchange between the artist and inmates that used environmental stewardship as a tool for self-reflection through the creation of perennial gardens on the prison grounds. Portrait Garden started in the summer of 2013 when Cazabon began working with women who volunteered to be part of the Maryland Green Prisons Initiative, a program created to bring nature into Maryland prisons by supporting partnerships between inmates and researchers outside of the prison system. The inmates selected for participation in Portrait Garden are serving sentences that range from 5 years to Life.

In the brutally cold winter of 2014, Black Lung emerged from Baltimore’s underbelly with unprecedented volume. This trio of Adam Bufano, Elias Mays Schutzman (both of The Flying Eyes) and multi-instrumentalist Dave Cavalier, moves air with sonic pain and bliss. After releasing their self-titled debut and being named “Best New Band” by the Baltimore City Paper, they embarked on a European tour in 2015, including a performance at the Rockpalast Crossroads Festival in Germany. Black Lung’s new album, See The Enemy, was produced by J. Robbins (The Sword, Clutch) and is scheduled for release on April 29th, 2016, on Noisolution. They will be supporting the album with a European tour in spring, including an appearance at the Freak Valley Festival with Graveyard and Dead Meadow. The storm is coming…

Welcome to the eclectic evening that is Championship Comics! This show is hosted by sketch/improv hybrid Championship Comics every second Saturday. Creator Al Bert sits at the drawing desk with various comic artists and writes a live comic book before your very eyes! This Saturday, we’ve got a doozy. We’ll start off with standup from Bmore favorite Christine Ferrera and Project comic Ian Salyers, and short form improv from house troupe Waiting for Steinberg. Then we’ll get into some long form improv from house team Banana Phone. After the break, we’ll flip the pages of Baltimore’s only live-action comic book!

You’ll leave from the Annabel Lee Tavern on a coach bus at 2 p.m. and return around 4 p.m. During the tour we’ll circle the important sites in Poe’s life. You’ll hear all about his beginnings as an award-winning author of horror tales. You’ll pass along the streets where he walked and see what is still there today. For 25 years, audiences have been thrilling to the sound of Poe’s works brought to life by actor David Keltz, from the masterpiece “The Raven” to the terrifying “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and many others. One hundred and sixty seven years later we still honor the man, his life, his works and everything Poe! ON OCTOBER 8TH Jeff Jerome, Poe House Curator Emeritus, and the Maryland Historical Society will honor Poe with a celebration of his life, not death, at POE’S GRAVE at the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground in downtown Baltimore! BEGINNING AT 2 PM Poe’s memory will be cherished with theatrical readings of select poems and excerpts from several of his most famous short stories. In addition, we are pleased to announce that performers from “A Dream Within A Dream: Madness” will present a segment from that unique production now performing in Alexandria, Virginia. See link at the end of this notice. EDGAR ALLAN POE AND VIRGINIA POE will appear from the netherworld as they thrill and chill the audience with ethereal recitings of select portions of “The Raven,” “Annabel Lee” and “The Conqueror Worm”! Marvel as Virginia Poe searches for her beloved husband and witness the reunion of these lovers! OUR FAMOUS AND BELOVED POE PERFORMERS–Matthew Bowerman, Don Mullins and the lovely Siobhan Beckett–will present theatrical readings of select poems, short stories, obituaries and tributes to Poe. Our talented troupe will present several appropriate songs during the event, with a special visit by not one but two raven dancers from the “A Dream Within A Dream: Madness” immersive play. I HAVE BEEN TOLD ON THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY that Edgar Allan Poe and his beloved (yet deceased) wife Virginia Clemm Poe (from the immersive play “A Dream Within A Dream: Madness,” that is running through Oct. 31st in Old Town Alexandria, VA) will be making a surprise appearance at “Poe is Dead.” They are expected to be joined by at least two raven dancers from their show.

Democalypse 2016: Presidential Debate #002

We will be hosting a debate watching party in Eightbar. Seating is very limited. So PLEASE, only RSVP if you’re planning on coming. We’re capping this event at 30 people. The second presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which half of the questions will be posed directly by citizen participants and the other half will be posed by the moderator based on topics of broad public interest as reflected in social media and other sources. The candidates will have two minutes to respond and there will be an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate further discussion. The town meeting participants will be uncommitted voters selected by the Gallup Organization.
