“This tour-de-force came from a 21-year-old filmmaker Don Coscarelli, who did just about everything on ‘Phantasm’, a wonderfully creative, bizarre, delightfully terrifying horror film that never fails to surprise. Told as if the whole experience were a nightmare, the film centers on Mike, a 15-year-old orphan who lives with his older brother, Jody. After witnessing some strange happenings at the funeral of a murdered friend (shadowy, gnomelike creatures lurking around tombstones, etc.), Mike grabs his skeptical brother and returns to the creepy mausoleum to investigate. Once inside, they find it is actually the headquarters of the lanky and grotesque undertaker, known only as ‘The Tall Man’ who is using the place as a connection with the netherworld in order to take over the Earth. The Tall Man has a number of insidious devices to ensure his success, most notably a shiny silver sphere that flies through the air, sprouts sharp spikes, plunges into the forehead of an unsuspecting victim, and then drills his brains out. The beauty of ‘Phantasm’ is its fever-dream quality, which paved the way for such genre entries as ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. Perhaps because of Coscarelli’s youth, ‘Phantasm’ seems the product of a warped teenage imagination, full as it is of creative and original scares rooted in basic fears of abandonment, loneliness, sex, and death. Although viewers leave the theater buzzing about the flying silver sphere, it was only one element in a film filled with unique, personal, witty, and, at the same time, terrifying imagery rarely seen in low-budget horror films.” (TV Guide)

Air Show Baltimore will take place over a two-and-a-half-hour period on October 15 and 16, featuring high-precision aviation acts from the U.S. Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard; the Royal Canadian Navy; the renowned Geico Skytypers; and an exciting aerobatic performance by Scott Francis. The featured act will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The air show will take place over the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. Public viewing sites along the Middle Branch are limited although there is ample viewing from the entire Inner Harbor area. Recreational boating traffic will be restricted from cruising the water in the air show “box” while the show is in progress.

Star Spangled Baltimore 2016

Air Show Baltimore will take place over a two-and-a-half-hour period on October 15 and 16, featuring high-precision aviation acts from the U.S. Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard; the Royal Canadian Navy; the renowned Geico Skytypers; and an exciting aerobatic performance by Scott Francis. The featured act will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The air show will take place over the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. Public viewing sites along the Middle Branch are limited although there is ample viewing from the entire Inner Harbor area. Recreational boating traffic will be restricted from cruising the water in the air show “box” while the show is in progress.

Opposing the exquisite singing of these 3 soprano stalwarts will be our long running tenor, Paul McIlvaine, whose musical tones have been heard at Sotto Sopra’s Opera Nights for the past 15 years. Hear all four voices as the evening opens with the resounding voices of La Traviata. Our incomparable accompanist, Thomas Hetrick, will “tickle the ivories” to complement the vocalizing that tell the stories of loves, lives and sacrifice. Each guest will receive a free CD as a remembrance of the Opera Night 15th Anniversary. We expect a sellout crowd; tickets should be purchased early to guarantee your evening of music, songs and our cuisine that reflects the deft hand that is Italian.

Parts & Pearls: A Fundraiser for the Oyster Recovery Partnership

Parts & Labor is hosting the 1st Annual Parts & Pearls, a charity event to benefit the Oyster Recovery Partnership. The cost of attendance per person will be $45, which will include all you can eat oysters on the half shell, grilled sausages and farm beers, supplied by Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm, Brookville Farm Brewery and Waredaca Brewing Company. The event will be held outside at Parts & Labor, rain or shine. No reservations are necessary, and payment can be made at the day of the event.

Yes, the good folks at Waverly will be pouring their fantastic brews, the Snake Hill sausages will be grilling to perfection and the crisp autumn air will be alive with the spooky sounds of reggae music… and yes you read that correctly. This month we will musically explore the darker, spookier and scarier side of reggae that celebrates the weird, the monstrous, the supernatural and all those other creeping things that go bump in the night.
