This last week was pretty exhausting for me, hoping for much smoother sailing this coming week.  It’s almost time for Thanksgiving so take it easy this week and have some fun.  Plenty to do in Baltimore this week.  As always, the local music scene is on fire.  Oh and the ice rink in the Inner Harbor is open now so go get your skate on.

Samiam was formed in late 1988 after the breakup of the Gilman club mainstay Isocracy. Their first show was in January 1989 with Christ on Parade. They released records through New Red Archives and Hopeless Records in the US and Burning Heart Records in Europe. In the mid-’90s, the band had two releases on major labels, Atlantic Records in 1994 and Ignition/Tommy Boy in 1997. This path achieved modest mainstream success; a video for Capsized gained a lot of airplay on MTV, they performed on the Jon Stewart Show in 1994 and the single, “She Found You” garnered considerable radio play in 1998. The band toured extensively throughout Europe, North America and Japan with Bad Religion, Green Day, The Toadies, Sense Field, Blink-182 and Millencolin.

Five local animal shelters, the Maryland SPCA, BARCS Animal Shelter, Baltimore County Animal Services and BMORE HUMANE (Baltimore Humane Society), each a member of the Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance (BAWA), along with the The Humane Society of Harford County, are working together to find homes for all of their adoptable pets by holding an ‘Adopt ‘till you drop!’ mega adopt-a-thon. ‘Adopt ‘till you drop!’ will take place inside White Marsh Mall in the space previously occupied by Sports Authority. All adoptions are first-come, first served and regular adoption procedures for each shelter still apply. Potential adopters should bring with them a valid photo ID. Out-of-state residents are eligible to adopt. Adoptable pets will go home with their new families the day of the event. All pets will have been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. The first 150 attendees will receive goodie bags filled with coupons, pet treats and toys.

Macon Reed “Who’s Afraid of Magic?” Opening Reception

Institute of Contemporary Art Baltimore presents Who’s Afraid of Magic? an exhibition by Macon Reed at Spacecamp in Baltimore, MD. Incorporating multiple video projections and works on paper in a wall-to-wall painted landscape Who’s Afraid of Magic? addresses extensive “witch” persecutions over a three hundred year period in Europe, drawing ties between these cruelties and the rise of early capitalism. Working from Silvia Federici’s text Caliban and The Witch, this multi-media installation questions notions of power as it relates to intelligence and bodies, fictions and realities, and the perceived threat of both imagination and magic. Video works include a ritual sacrifice of a human maypole and intimate, playful storytelling within a diorama of brightly colored small sculptures. Reed’s DIY pop aesthetic mixes with painted images of medieval torture devices, asking us to connect the dots between historic and contemporary treatments of “other” and things we do not understand.

The Garrett family, owners of the B&O Railroad, the Walters, founders of the Walters Art Museum, and other families, built and lived in handsome mansions along the four parks of Mount Vernon Place surrounding the Washington Monument. The recent award-winning restoration to the 200-year old Washington Monument is the latest news from the revival of this historic neighborhood over the last decade. Join us on a tour to hear the stories behind the Washington Monument and see the landmarks of Baltimore’s grandest historic neighborhood. If your legs are strong, climb the Monument’s 227 steps for a birds-eye view of central Baltimore! Per city code, space inside the monument’s tower is limited.
