Things to do in Baltimore this week 12/5

After several hours of driving and hunting, I found my perfect Christmas tree yesterday. One night of soaking up water in a 10 gallon bucket and its ready to be decorated.  We discovered too late, however, that our tree lights have gone bad in storage.  Thank God for Amazon.  There are plenty of activities this week to get you in the Christmas spirit or if you are just interested in the imbibing of spirits there is plenty of that too.  Next weekend is packed full of holiday pop-up shops and art sales. I’ll need to live vicariously through you as you take it all in while I hop back to the Midwest for a couple of days.  Maybe I can get Mr. Meat and Potatoes to do the shopping for me, doubtful.

A Soulhouette Session with Maya Elizabeth
8PM – 9PM
Hotel RL Baltimore Inner Harbor by Red Lion
207 E Redwood St, Baltimore
Maya Elizabeth is on a mission to share songs that reflect healing, truth & love. She believes we all possess gifts we’re responsible for using to uplift others. Maya began songwriting when she was 6. The practice has become her therapeutic release, and she feels burdened to encourage others with her thoughts & sound. Maya’s work results from her experiences, her struggles, and intimate conversations with God, whom she acknowledges as her source of life, hope and truth. Frustrations like perfectionism, low self-esteem, and anxiety inspire Maya’s substantive, thought provoking, original lyrics, complimented by her raw, soulful sound. She hopes to relay her story through song to encourage others who may be experiencing similar doubts about their worth and their purpose. To launch the Maya Elizabeth Music movement, the young, independent, inspirational-soul artist has worked with long-time mentor, friend and producer Robert Levine to release two powerfully uplifting singles and a heart-wrenching music video. Her first two singles, ‘Come Ye’ and ‘The Anthem (Say Oh),’ preview her debut album entitled, ‘Soulhouette: This is M.E.’ (2016). To learn more about her music and how you can support her art, visit www.mayaelizabethmusic.com

Duffy’s Cut, The Bo Deadlys, & The Stents
8PM – 1AM
The Windup Space
12 W North Ave, Baltimore
MrKnuckleSandwich Booking and Unmutual Productions present:
Duffy’s Cut‘s sound is British invasion and Motown with broken glass and baseball bats. They manage to wear their American soul, Brit invasion, punk and Oi! influences on their sleeve while, somehow, creating a sound that is as unique as it is infectious.
The Bo Deadlys play loud, fast, relentless rock and roll.
The Stents were formed from a mutual love of obscure, dusty music and going bananas while playing live whenever and wherever possible. They play a mix of garage rock, power pop, surf and stuff that jangles. Heavy beats, fuzz guitars, harmonies and feedback are the weapons they employ.

About Face Exhibition Opening
6PM – 8PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Featuring: Amy Sherald, Rozeal, Tim Okamura, & Ebony Patterson.  About Face turns its attention to underrepresented communities, historically marginalized by the genre of portraiture, combining Amy Sherald’s portraits with a selection of the nation’s best young contemporary figurative artists. Each artist in the exhibition tackles stereotypes of race in different ways. Amy Sherald paints the flesh of her subjects in grayscale to remove specific connotations of skin tone and race while dressing them in a manner that contradicts the roles and stereotypes historically associated with black culture. Rozeal addresses the use of black face and the crinkling of hair in Japanese culture to make subjects appear more African. Her paintings also update the classical look of Japanese woodcuts from the Edo period with contemporary western settings. Tim Okamura juxtaposes the rawness and urgency of street art with realism to create an accessible visual language through portraiture. Jamaican artist Ebony G. Patterson creates highly embellished, collaged, and appliquéd tapestries, as well as photographic prints of human forms.

7PM – 11PM
Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
Unregistered Nurse Booking presents: Night Birds, WarXGames, Joe Biden – band, and BraceFace! Night Birds is comprised of four thoroughly modern morons from the New Jersey shore and Brooklyn, NY. After one listen it will only seem right that these guys spawn from the same state that brought you such class acts as the Misfits and Adrenalin OD. This high-octane surf-inspired punk rock band formed in the spring of 2009 following the demise of bassist Joe Keller’s band, The Ergs! While they take cues from the greats of 1980’s hardcore/punk bands like the Circle Jerks, Zero Boys, and Adolescents, they still manage to keep it new and fresh and consistently take it to that next level. To date, the band has released three 7″ EPs as well as their 2011 debut album, The Other Side of Darkness on Grave Mistake Records (with a new 7″ and LP just around the corner!), as well as playing nearly 200 shows all over the United States, Canada, and Europe. If you like Seinfeld, pizza, horror movies, or any combination of the three, Night Birds may be your new favorite band.
