In 2014, we launched with CoHosts, our inaugural Speaker Series, which was organized with thirteen local commercial, artist-run, and independent galleries. Each gallery responded to a simple question: Who is the one artist or art professional that you want The Contemporary to bring to Baltimore? In 2016-17, we’ve decided to resume the series and have partnered with six artist-run platforms including galleries, spaces, collectives, and festivals. All lectures are free and held at the Baltimore School for the Arts, located at 712 Cathedral Street. The participating cohosts are: Earthseed, First Continent, Penthouse Gallery, Platform Gallery, Terrault Contemporary, and Transmodern Festival.

Dunbar Alumni Jazz Band – Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite

The Nutcracker Suite is an album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington recorded for the Columbia label in 1960 featuring jazz interpretations of “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, arranged by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.[1] The album was rereleased on CD in 1990 as part of Three Suites along with Ellington’s reworking of Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite” and “Suite Thursday,” his tribute to John Steinbeck. The original 1960 cover is notable for the inclusion of Strayhorn’s name and picture along with Ellington’s. We have started this organization to raise awareness about dog theft in Baltimore and to help reunite pets with their families.

Choose from a beautiful selection that includes cutting boards, adirondack chairs, christmas ornaments, and more–all making wonderful holiday gifts. Your purchase will not only buy you a hand-crafted item but, more importantly, it will support the young men of our Fresh Start program. Fresh Start is a 40-week job skills training program that serves out-of-school youth, ages 17-19, most of whom are referred by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. The program uses carpentry as a medium to teach reading, writing, math, history, and science. Students work in the Foundation’s Maritime Institute workshop and the Douglass-Myers Maritime Park boatbuilding workshop, building toolboxes, furniture, and boats. They also receive classroom instruction and one-on-one tutoring. The curriculum is designed to increase self-reliance, teach problem solving and academic skills, and demonstrate how academic skills and knowledge are used in a practical work environment.

The most rewarding event Xavier has been able to share his gift was for the 51st Commemoration of Bloody Sunday in Selma,AL 2016. It was at the Bloody Sunday Commemoration or The Jubilee where he was able to sing before 35,000 people, including congressional leaders of the US, NAACP representatives and more. Xavier Martin is ecstatic for what is happening in his life and is a testament to Proverbs 18:16.

Dreadlocks, Rock ‘n Roll & Human Rights is an autobiographical solo show about a black youth who rocks and rolls to his own beat while battling racism, stereotypes and ignorance. Written and performed by Ron Kipling Williams, it is a journey about an awkward black youth living in middle class Washington, DC; his discovery of alternative and punk rock music, independent radio and social justice; his tumultuous familial relationships; the conflicts between his role within the race and class system and his staunch resistance to it; and his emergence as a free thinking human in a hegemonic American society. Dreadlocks, Rock ‘n Roll & Human Rights is a thought-provoking tale of a man who struggles against society’s intolerance and fights to create a world of acceptance.

Contestants compete in short, strange games that range from “I don’t understand the rules” to “I would rather be playing bingo.” Win and keep playing against other players, or lose and sit down and make a Facebook status about how stupid it is.
