It’s Spring in Baltimore!  Finally, the weather is getting nice and with that comes the promise of many outdoor activities.  This week is jam packed full of fun.  Don’t even get me started on the weekend, I’m having a hard time choosing what to do.  Light City is back!  Get downtown and see what it has to offer.  I’ll definitely be at Rye Rocks and Emporiyum filling my body full of goodness!  Maybe I’ll see you around?

It’s time for our 4th pho eating competition!!!! This one is march madness style so buckle up for the breakdown. 12 team spots. 4 members per team.
ROUND 1 – a “pho cup” each member of the team must eat a small cup of pho as fast as possible. 4 advancing teams.
ROUND 2 – deconstructed pho bowl. Each member eats a different part of pho (the noodles, the broth and the meat) the fourth person chugs a sake bomb. This is a relay style round. 2 advancing teams.
ROUND 3 – the phoritto. each member must eat half of a phoritto
Here’s the twist… Your time from each round is accumulated. so if your lucky enough to advance to next round you will enter it with whatever time you had in the previous round. The 3rd round will be rounds 1 and 2 times combined.
SIDE BETS!!!!!! because time is accumulated, if you are an advancing team and want to knock seconds of your time this is for you! In between each round a single team member or entire team can challenge another advancing team to one of our predetermined mini drinking games. If you win you will either have 5 or 10 seconds deducted from your overall time.
Cost is $60 per team. This includes all food during the competition and any alcohol used in the side bet competitions

Blueprints & Bioluminescence Workshop

Local Baltimore City Master Gardeners of University of Maryland Extensionwill help children create a glowing firefly craft from recycled materials while they teach how these bioluminescent insects use light to communicate. They’ll share simple tips to create a firefly habitat in residential yards to help increase the population of these vulnerable winged beetles. This craft may be carried by children as part of the firefly parade at the FloraLume unveiling party the following evening. Reservations required.
Artist Maura Dwyer will also guide a limited number of community members in creating a unique cyanotype art work celebrating native plants and fireflies to commemorate the FloraLume mural. This workshop is free, but space is limited and requires reservations and arrival at a specific time to participate. 40 people will be able to create a 5″x7″ souvenir and 10 people will be able to create a large poster (limited to one per family). Bring your family to the unveiling of FloraLume, our Light City Neighborhood Lights  project. This colorful, glowing mural from local artist Maura Dwyer celebrates native plants and the diversity of Hamilton-Lauraville. Watch it transform at sunset under dancing ultraviolet lights. Entertainment includes music from DJ Landis Expandis, a performance from Baltimore Dance Crews Project, and performers from Baltimore Hoop Love. Children’s activities include an illuminated firefly parade with children wearing the costumes they created earlier in the week at workshops at local businesses  and a seed-starting craft to grow a flower featured in the mural. Art produced by local children and teens that relates to the mural theme will be projected as a slideshow on the side of the building. Food will be provided by local businesses, with a focus on signature dishes. Special diets including vegan and gluten-free will be accommodated. Other local vendors will provide light-themed items (like illuminated accessories for people and pets) as well as handmade crafts.

In the summer of 2014, after a long stretch of living on the road, performing and writing across the U.S., Americana songwriters and Virginia natives Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish, collectively known as THE HONEY DEWDROPS, decided to settle down in Baltimore, MD. And so the couple took their experiences on the road, and dug in to write and record their fourth album, TANGLED COUNTRY, in their new home. It’s a beautiful and engaging take on modern American roots music and the first album of theirs entirely written, arranged, and recorded in one place; a testament to the power of home.
