Things to do in Baltimore this week 9/18/17

Well friends, this first official day of fall is this Friday.  Summer is really over.  I’m a prisoner in my own home thanks to fall allergies.  I went outside for 45 minutes yesterday and boy did I pay for that.  Think of me in my house clinging to my air purifier and and a box of kleenex while you are busy doing all of these fun outdoor activities this week.  I do plan to pull myself together and go to Bookmaker’s 3rd Birthday on Wednesday.  Because whiskey and allergy medicine make a great combination, right?  There is also no way I am missing the Baltimore Book Festival or Mr. Trash Wheel’s Friendversary Party.  Wish me luck!

Tokyo Drifter
7PM – 8:30PM
Charles Revival Series
1711 N Charles St, Baltimore
“Deliriously playful yakuza pic, in which Suzuki lets logic hang. Basically just another tale of gang warfare, it’s kitted out with plot ellipses, bizarre sets and colour effects, inappropriate songs, absurd irrelevancies, action scenes that verge on the abstract, and some visual jokes tottering precariously between slapstick and surrealism. Somehow, it still just about works as a thriller, with (very, very faint) echoes of Melville and Leone. Inspired lunacy.” (Geoff Andrew, TimeOut) 1966 Dir. Seijun Suzuki 2.35:1 Color/bw DCP 89 min. In Japanese with English subtitles.

About SUPERGIRL (Supergirl Documentary): When a nine-year-old girl breaks a powerlifting world record, she turns into an international phenomenon and “Supergirl” is born. Naomi Kutin seems like a typical Orthodox Jewish pre-teen, until her extraordinary talent transforms the lives of her family and thrusts her into news headlines. SUPERGIRL follows Naomi’s unique coming-of-age story as she fights to hold on to her title while navigating the perils of adolescence—from strict religious obligations to cyber-bullying, and health issues which could jeopardize her future in powerlifting. Can she still be “Supergirl” if she can no longer break world records? With a passionate family supporting her each step of the way, Naomi must learn to accept herself and discover she is as strong inside as she is outside.

CSJQ Presents “Monk at 100: A Tribute to Thelonious Monk”
7:30PM – 10PM
Germano’s Piattini and Cabaret at Germano’s
300 S High St, Baltimore
In honor of Thelonious Monk’s 100th birthday, CSJQ presents a special show devoted to his marvelous music. Known as one of jazz’s true eccentrics, Monk was, more importantly, one of the greatest composers in jazz history. His oeuvre includes such standards as “‘Round Midnight” and “Well, You Needn’t,” and runs the gamut from simple tunes such as “Blue Monk” to challenging compositions like “Trinkle Tinkle.” But even his most somber pieces are full of wit and humor.
In “Monk at 100” CSJQ captures Monk’s many moods. The band will offer a variety of tempos and textures ranging from bass/sax duos, to trio settings, to vocals with the full quartet. Between the tunes, bandleader Mark Osteen tells entertaining and informative stories about Monk’s life and work.

“…An ideal opportunity to rediscover this mind-blowing myth of origin as it was meant to be seen and heard…Dialogue plays a minimal role, yet the plot encompasses the history of mankind….It meditates at length on the complex relationship between humanity and technology—not only the human qualities that we ascribe to machines but also the programming we knowingly or unknowingly submit to. The film’s projections of the cold war and antiquated product placements may look quaint now, but the poetry is as hard-edged and full of wonder as ever.” (Jonathan Rosenbaum)
