Things to do in Baltimore this week 9/25/17

If you are looking for somewhere to celebrate Oktoberfest this week, Baltimore has lots of options.  I guess I should be getting out my dirndl dress to go and partake in the festivities.  Still waiting for it to actually feel like fall outside.  I’ll be happy if I can just turn off my air conditioning.  As usual, I’ll be at Brews and Board Games at The Windup Space.  I haven’t decided what other fun activities I will venture out to yet but at least there are plenty to choose from!

THE CONNECTION, 1962, USA, 110 minutes, Director: Shirley Clarke
When Jack Gelber’s play THE CONNECTION opened in New York, Shirley Clarke discovered the perfect vehicle to question the idea that cinéma vérité was a reliable replacement for traditional documentary filmmaking. The Living Theatre produced Gelber’s play in 1959 play to audiences and critics who were at first bewildered and/or upset by it. Set in a squalid Greenwich Village apartment, a group of drug addicts are waiting for their connection to bring their fixes. Many of them are jazz musicians, who perform during the play.

A Night Of Japanese New Wave & Obscure
10:30PM – 1:45AM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
The Crown presents:
“In the 70’s and 80’s, a phenonmenon unprecedented occured in Japan. After years of turmoil after World War II, the Land of the Rising Sun underwent an immense transformation to become the second largest economy in the world. The Japanese Economic Miracle (see wikipedia) led to a strong middle class and a frutiful period of growth for the Japanese people. Through this prosperity came a wave of innovative music that was years ahead of its time. Due to Japan’s secluded culture (and the western superiority complex) most of the music from this time period goes unknown and under-appreciated by the west. In an ideal world Yellow Magic Orchestra, Midori Takada, Yasuaki Shimizu, Akiko Yano, Haruomi Hosono (etc. etc) would be household names just like Brian Eno, Lou Reed, David Bowie, New Order (etc. etc.). It is time to celebrate these artists and present them the attention they deserve.
