Things to do in Baltimore this week 1/22/18

It’s not going to be miserably cold this week, yay! I feel like I haven’t made enough plans this week. My calendar is unusually open despite all the wonderful options out there. I am for sure going to see Cloud 9 by Iron Crow Theatre on Friday though. If you haven’t noticed, I go to see at least one theatre production a week. It’s hard not to with all the great theatre options we have here in Baltimore! What is stopping you?

The Exterminating Angel
7PM – 8:35PM
Charles Revival Series
1711 N Charles St, Baltimore
”In the best surrealist tradition, Buñuel claimed that his brilliant, disconcertingly funny joke – after an upper class dinner party, the guests find some mysterious compulsion making it impossible for them to leave the premises – has no rational explanation. True enough, but there are meanings aplenty in his powerful central image of decay as the vast, magnificently appointed bourgeois salon is gradually reduced to a sordid rubbish-heap where the once elegant guests squat and gnaw at bones. Significantly, the whole thing takes place under the sign of the church, but what still delights about the film is the way it refuses to be pigeonholed. Devastatingly funny, illuminated by unexpected shafts of generosity and tenderness, it remains one of Bunuel’s very best.” (TimeOut London)

An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
One of the finest modern jazz pianists, Marilyn Crispell has recorded some of the “most beautiful piano trio records in recent memory,” said Adam Shatz in the New York Times. Crispell came to prominence as a free jazz player and composer early in the 1980s, and over the next 20 years honed her reputation with the Anthony Braxton Quartet and as a leader of her own ensembles. Influenced strongly by the work of jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, Crispell first charted her own course in jazz piano with her up-tempo, percussive improvisations; in the late 1990s she once again broke new ground with a lyrical, introspective improvisational style.

Long Day’s Journey: Them to Us
4PM – 6PM
Everyman Theatre
315 W Fayette St, Baltimore
Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night” was written 75 years ago, but its revelations on substance use, alcoholism, family dynamics and emotional pain are as resonant and relevant today as ever. Join Everyman Theatre and the New Day Campaign as we welcome artists, performers, addiction experts, and families to share through art, song, and words reflections and experiences. Related to and inspired by O’Neill’s award-winning play, we will explore what affects those touched by addiction the most: the allure of using as an escape from our pain; the role of guilt and blame; the inevitability of suspicion and harm that comes with broken trust; the confusion and ambivalence we feel.
New Day Campaign founder Peter Bruun uses excerpts from the play as a catalyst for a facilitated conversation with clients, families, and staff from Ashley Addiction Treatment, Black Mental Health Alliance, Marian House, and Maryland Coalition for Families—Baltimore area treatment and family-support programs who share their expertise, experiences, and resources. All is punctuated with art by Anthony Ness, Elisif Bruun, and Ben Cricchi, music from ellen cherry and QueenEarth, and poetry and spoken word from Clarence Brown and Kondwani Fidel.
