It’s a good week to be in Baltimore if you like cider. CiderCon 2018 is going down this week and even if you can’t get tickets to the convention there are plenty of area bars having their own tastings and events. For theatre this week I’ll be attending opening night of The Death of Walt Disney at Single Carrot Theatre on Friday. It runs through the end of the month so get your tickets! The big game is this Sunday but there is still plenty of fun going on for those of you who don’t enjoy football. I’m more excited about the Kitten Bowl and Puppy Bowl this year. I like to watch them with my cats. Don’t judge me, being a cat lady is totally “in” right now.

The Sound of Music at the Senator
7:30PM – 10:30PM
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Rd, Baltimore
“It’s hard to tune into ‘The Sound of Music’ these days without being deafened by the noises off; that caterwauling chorus of adoration, ridicule, reverence and contempt that has dogged the film since its release back in 1965. But check your cynicism at the door: Robert Wise’s adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical still has a little soul in its bones, with its reactionary nature tempered by Ernest Lehman’s supple screenplay, and its elephantine running-time eased by a set of songs that lodge in your system like hookworms. The mood is set by that spectacularly brazen, unblushing opening shot, in which the camera comes swooping over the Alps, tilting south to target Julie Andrews’ singing governess.” (Xan Brooks, The Guardian)

Red Velvet, by Lolita Chakrabarti, takes audiences backstage to witness the London debut of the trailblazing African-American actor Ira Aldridge as Shakespeare’s tragic Venetian general. He was the first man of color to play the role at an influential European theatre. Based on a true story, the play captures the emotion of the times and the drama both on stage and off surrounding this revolution in the theatre. Directed by Shirley Basfield Dunlap, the cast includes Christian Gibbs as Ira Aldridge (and Othello), Laura Rocklyn as actress Ellen Tree (and Desdemona), and Ron Heneghan as the actor Charles Kean.

[so, $5 beats $1, $10 beats $5, $20 beats $10… You get the drift.] Also, for a minimum donation of $20 someone can make any Fierce Chick in attendance sing the song of their choosing- no matter how embarrassing! In the event of higher donations, there may even be video involved. 100% of proceeds go to Moveable Feast. Team Fierce Chicks Rock are proud participants in the 2018 Ride For The Feast, a 140 mile bike ride from Ocean City to Baltimore, MD, raising funds and awareness for Moveable Feast.
The Death of Walt Disney
February 2- February 25
Thursdays-Saturdays at 8:00pm, Sundays at 3:00pm
Single Carrot Theatre
2600 N Howard St, Baltimore
Leave the magic behind in this darkly humorous, cutting examination of the megalomaniac who shaped a thousand childhoods: Mr. Walt Disney. The carefree and charming creator of so many beloved characters – father-figure to a generation of Americans – fades away as this fraught and fast-paced play chases down the dark heart of the Disney machine. Power, betrayal, deception, and disillusionment weave together to form a portrait of a man so full of hubris and obsessed with his own legacy, he tried to remake the world and achieve immortality. Join us at the table.
