This is going to be an excellent week! I’m moving in to my new apartment on Saturday and I could not be more thrilled. Make sure you eat at a restaurant participating in Dining Out For Life on Thursday. You get to eat tasty food AND support a good cause. That is a win/win in my book. On Friday I’m going to see Lysistrata at Spotlighters Theatre if I have finished all my packing. On Saturday the Charm City Night Market is the MUST ATTEND event of the weekend. I’ve been looking forward to it for months! The bonus is that I’ll be living just nearby. Okay, now who wants to help me unpack….?

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Repurposed with Purpose // Opening Reception
6PM – 9PM
Maryland Art Place
218 W Saratoga St, Baltimore
Repurposed with Purpose: Meaning in the Materials of Making, Curated by Doreen Bolger. This exhibition aims to enrich the visitor’s experience—and their understanding of the arts and humanities—by encouraging viewers to look for greater variance and nuance in the meaning of materials. The choice of materials holds different significance for each artist, sometimes reflecting larger societal issues and at others, more personal interests, concerns, or priorities. Some artists are thinking about the environment and as they choose their materials, commenting on its fragility and the impact of its degradation on mankind and the earth, now and in times to come. They celebrate reuse while mourning waste, creating compelling works of art, sometimes interactive and experiential, even pointing out that mankind is causing obsolescence, decay, and even mortality. Some artists reference or incorporate historic found objects that take us from the present moment to the past and memory, reminding us that time is a continuum. Others repurpose their own creations, giving them a new expression. For many, the use and meaning of these materials allow them to reach across boundaries of race, class, and gender orientation to remind us that we are unified by our humanity. Some even embrace a more evident position of social activism or political statement, making work where their choice of materials raises issues specific to the time and place in which we live.

Lysistrata. . . a play for the 21st Century!
Sep 21-Oct 14, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Lysistrata, originally written and performed in 411 BCE, is considered by many to be the greatest work of the ancient comic playwright Aristophanes. In the play, as part of her extraordinary mission to stop a grinding, never‑ending war, Athenian matron Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sex and to capture the Acropolis, thus bankrupting the war effort and reducing men to comic deprived desperation. Bawdy, unrestrained and surprisingly modern in its world view, Lysistrata is performed in a recent translation by Sarah Ruden that critics call “a perfect Lysistrata for the new millennium.”

The Laramie Project
Sep 14-Sep 23, TR-Sun shows
Iron Crow Theatre
45 West Preston Street, Baltimore
In October 1998, a twenty-one-year-old openly gay student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, beaten, tortured, and left to die — tied to a fence in the middle of a prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, simply for being gay. His name was Matthew Shepard. Matthew’s murder brought national and international attention to the lack of hate crime legislation across the nation and forced a small community to wrestle with its identity on both the local and national levels. In this groundbreaking docudrama, Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project capture the human voice of Laramie. With just 8 actors playing over 60 characters, The Laramie Project weaves together interviews, journal entries, and published news reports to create a breathtaking theatrical collage exploring the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. The Laramie Project explores mature themes, contains adult language, and graphic retellings of violence. The Laramie Project may not be suitable for patrons under the age of 13.

Paternal Rites is a first-person essay film that examines the secret underbelly of a contemporary Jewish American family as they grapple with the aftereffects of physical and sexual abuse on their present-day lives. It is also a groundbreaking film about the nature of trauma and memory itself: the ways in which trauma encrypts in uncanny ways; the function of speech and narrative in the process of decryption; and the role of film and filmmaking in the practice of healing. Paternal Rites draws inspiration from podcasts like This American Life and Radiolab and the long lineage of LGBT essay filmmakers in the US.

Lysistrata. . . a play for the 21st Century!

Craig Harris Quintet
8PM & 9:30PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
When Craig Harris exploded onto the jazz scene in 1976, he brought the entire history of the jazz trombone with him. From the growling gutbucket intensity of early New Orleans music through the refined, articulate improvisation of the modern era set forth by J.J. Johnson, into the confrontational expressionism of the ‘60s avant-garde, Craig handled the total vernacular the way a skilled orator utilizes the spoken word. He has performed with a veritable Who’s Who of progressive jazz’s most important figures and his own projects display both a unique sense of concept and a total command of the sweeping expanse of musical expression. It is those two qualities that have dominated Craig’s forty years of activity, bringing him far beyond the confines of the jazz world into the sphere of multimedia and performance art as composer, performer, conceptualist, music curator, and artistic director.
