I’m having to restrain myself from doing allofthethings this week because I have so much going on behind the scenes. I just need to make it to the weekend. On Friday I’m going to opening night for the world premiere of Putin On Ice (that isn’t the real title of this show) at Single Carrot Theatre. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this play for a year now so I’m super pumped. On Sunday I’m going to try to fit in the 7th Annual Baltimore Deviled Egg Pageant followed by the End of Summer Party at La Food Marketa. You know how much I LOVE La Food Marketa. Wish me luck this week, I’ll need it!

NON FICTION: Dr. Diane Pomerantz is a clinical psychologist who has been in practice working with children, adolescents, and adults in the Baltimore, Maryland area for over thirty-five years. She has done extensive work in the area of trauma and child abuse and research in the area of personality development of abused children. She currently runs Healing Through Writing groups in her practice. She is a breast cancer survivor and has two wonderful grown children.
POETRY: Jane Lewty is the author of two poetry collections: Bravura Cool (1913 Press: 2013) winner of the 1913 First Book Prize in 2011, and In One Form To Find Another (Cleveland State University Poetry Center: 2017) selected as the winner of the CSU Open Book Competition in 2016
FICTION: Clynthia Burton Graham is a passionate fiction writer who explores emotional, impactful, and defining moments in the lives of people of color. Her inspiration has been honed through the years. From listening to her aunt’s, grandmothers, and mother while hiding under the kitchen table to slinking beneath the window of the neighborhood barber shop, to walking the streets of Baltimore conversing with the homeless to the elite, she has cultivated the art of storytelling in her prose.

Reunited in Los Angeles thanks to the ebbs and flows of adult life, the pair met multi-instrumentalist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad. They named themselves Mt. Joy as an ode to a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near Sam’s childhood home, and together, with Byrnes’ roommate Caleb Nelson producing, they recorded three songs and sent them out into the world, hoping for the best. “I knew I still wanted to write songs, but the realities of life made that dream seem pretty impossible,” Quinn says.

The initial musical connection between saxophonist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson was made in 1990s jam sessions in New York City, with both going on to individual success – Iverson in hit trio The Bad Plus and Turner as a solo leader and in such groups as the trio Fly. A decade after their first meeting, the saxophonist and pianist began an association in the Billy Hart Quartet, the two players featuring sympathetically on two widely lauded ECM albums by that band. Now with Temporary Kings – their debut on record as a duo – Turner and Iverson explore aesthetic common ground that encompasses the cool-toned intricacies of the Lennie Tristano/Warne Marsh jazz school, as well as the heightened intimacy of modernist chamber music. The album presents six originals by Iverson and two by Turner. There’s an off-kilter blues and a strikingly melodic, almost Ravelian opening track dedicated to the Swiss town where the album was recorded, plus an interpretation of Marsh’s playfully serpentine “Dixie’s Dilemma.”

The public interpretive program will feature military encampments, drill and weapon demonstrations, military camp life, as well as modern entertainments and performances culminated by a grand fireworks display on Saturday evening. The Blues will be representing the Maryland Militia Artillery which served with distinction along side their Federal counterparts in successfully defending Fort McHenry during a British naval bombardment on September 13-14, 1814.

In this groundbreaking docudrama, Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project capture the human voice of Laramie. With just 8 actors playing over 60 characters, The Laramie Project weaves together interviews, journal entries, and published news reports to create a breathtaking theatrical collage exploring the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. The Laramie Project explores mature themes, contains adult language, and graphic retellings of violence. The Atlanta-based Algiers crushes the call-and-response of gospel, the urgency of 60s protest soul, the intensity of post-punk and no wave into a noise pulp all their own. Algiers are a politically conscious indie rock trio who combine elements of post-punk and no wave with blues, gospel, and even early industrial music. They are based in New York City and London, England. The band came together in 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia when guitarist Lee Tesche and bassist Ryan Mahan, both members of the city’s thriving underground rock and noise scenes, encountered vocalist and guitarist Franklin James Fisher, whose own musical roots were in the grand black gospel tradition of the Deep South, the soul-blues of Nina Simone, and angular funk. All of its members play percussion and keyboards, and do drum programming. Their songs actively engage in cultural critique by commenting on traditions in political, social, and religious realms.

The volunteers of the Chesapeake Independent Blues will be joining the Fort McHenry Guard in commemorating the defense of Baltimore in 1814 as part of the annual Defenders Day Weekend celebrations being held on September 14-16. 2018. The public interpretive program will feature military encampments, drill and weapon demonstrations, military camp life, as well as modern entertainments and performances culminated by a grand fireworks display on Saturday evening. The Blues will be representing the Maryland Militia Artillery which served with distinction along side their Federal counterparts in successfully defending Fort McHenry during a British naval bombardment on September 13-14, 1814.
