Things to do in Baltimore this week 9/10/18

I’m having to restrain myself from doing allofthethings this week because I have so much going on behind the scenes. I just need to make it to the weekend. On Friday I’m going to opening night for the world premiere of Putin On Ice (that isn’t the real title of this show) at Single Carrot Theatre. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this play for a year now so I’m super pumped. On Sunday I’m going to try to fit in the 7th Annual Baltimore Deviled Egg Pageant followed by the End of Summer Party at La Food Marketa. You know how much I LOVE La Food Marketa. Wish me luck this week, I’ll need it!

Schola

She’ll start you off with crostini di fegatini (chicken liver spread) and fettunta, a roasted slice of bread with garlic, Felsina’s 2017 estate olive oil and salt along side their opulent Chardonnay. We’ll then get to work on pappardelle alla lepre o al sugo di cinghiale, a fresh, egg noodle pasta with wild boar ragout, pappa al pomodoro – a tomato and bread soup so thick it resembles risotto and the classic bistecca alla fiorentina, an etherial version of roasted beef. Chiare will share the Chiantis of Felsina along with their Cabernet to pair along with these Tuscan classics. And to end the perfect evening, some freshly baked almond biscotti. $85

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Preoccupations w/ Raindeer at Metro Gallery
7:30PM – ?
Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
Preoccupations ’ songs have always worked through themes of creation, destruction, and futility, and they’ve always done it with singular post-punk grit. The textures are evocative and razor-sharp. The wire is always a live one. But while that darker side may have been well-explored, that’s not quite the same as it being fully, intensely lived. This time it was, and the result is ’New Material’, a collection that broadens and deepens Preoccupations to a true mastery of their sound. In it lies the difference between witnessing a car crash and crashing your own, between jumping into an ocean and starting to swallow the water.

Mt. Joy at The 8×10
7PM – 10PM
The 8×10
10 E Cross St, Baltimore
Mt. Joy started off as a rekindling of shared musical ambitions between Philadelphia high school friends Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar). Reunited in Los Angeles thanks to the ebbs and flows of adult life, the pair met multi-instrumentalist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad. They named themselves Mt. Joy as an ode to a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near Sam’s childhood home, and together, with Byrnes’ roommate Caleb Nelson producing, they recorded three songs and sent them out into the world, hoping for the best. “I knew I still wanted to write songs, but the realities of life made that dream seem pretty impossible,” Quinn says.

Mark Turner / Ethan Iverson: Temporary Kings
8PM & 9:30PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
The initial musical connection between saxophonist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson was made in 1990s jam sessions in New York City, with both going on to individual success – Iverson in hit trio The Bad Plus and Turner as a solo leader and in such groups as the trio Fly. A decade after their first meeting, the saxophonist and pianist began an association in the Billy Hart Quartet, the two players featuring sympathetically on two widely lauded ECM albums by that band. Now with Temporary Kings – their debut on record as a duo – Turner and Iverson explore aesthetic common ground that encompasses the cool-toned intricacies of the Lennie Tristano/Warne Marsh jazz school, as well as the heightened intimacy of modernist chamber music. The album presents six originals by Iverson and two by Turner. There’s an off-kilter blues and a strikingly melodic, almost Ravelian opening track dedicated to the Swiss town where the album was recorded, plus an interpretation of Marsh’s playfully serpentine “Dixie’s Dilemma.”

The Laramie Project
Sep 14-Sep 23, TR-Sun shows
Iron Crow Theatre
45 West Preston Street, Baltimore
In October 1998, a twenty-one-year-old openly gay student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, beaten, tortured, and left to die — tied to a fence in the middle of a prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, simply for being gay. His name was Matthew Shepard. Matthew’s murder brought national and international attention to the lack of hate crime legislation across the nation and forced a small community to wrestle with its identity on both the local and national levels. In this groundbreaking docudrama, Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project capture the human voice of Laramie. With just 8 actors playing over 60 characters, The Laramie Project weaves together interviews, journal entries, and published news reports to create a breathtaking theatrical collage exploring the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. The Laramie Project explores mature themes, contains adult language, and graphic retellings of violence. The Laramie Project may not be suitable for patrons under the age of 13.

Algiers at Creative Alliance w/ F City
8PM – 10:30PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
The Atlanta-based Algiers crushes the call-and-response of gospel, the urgency of 60s protest soul, the intensity of post-punk and no wave into a noise pulp all their own. Algiers are a politically conscious indie rock trio who combine elements of post-punk and no wave with blues, gospel, and even early industrial music. They are based in New York City and London, England. The band came together in 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia when guitarist Lee Tesche and bassist Ryan Mahan, both members of the city’s thriving underground rock and noise scenes, encountered vocalist and guitarist Franklin James Fisher, whose own musical roots were in the grand black gospel tradition of the Deep South, the soul-blues of Nina Simone, and angular funk. All of its members play percussion and keyboards, and do drum programming. Their songs actively engage in cultural critique by commenting on traditions in political, social, and religious realms.

Putin is elevated from man to myth, stretching through time to become more deity than dictator. You are free to leave at any time. World premiere. Pay-What-You-Can Previews: September 12-13.

Home is Where the House is :: DJ Diaspora
10PM – 2AM
Diskobar
911 N Charles St, Baltimore
Dj diaspora started buying records in her hometown Chicago, inspired by the underground deep house parties in the early 90s. After moving to the UK, she was blown away by West London’s “broken beat” scene, and knew her mission as a DJ– to share broken beat, and its influences, with the US. While DJing in Chicago, Philly, NYC, and DC, DJ Diaspora developed her eclectic blend of broken beat with Afrobeat, Latin beat, deep house, Brazilian jazz, disco, drum ‘n bass/jungle, and nujazz, with a focus on the African diaspora (which most of broken beat’s UK originators are from). DJ Diaspora has had the honor of opening for innovative artists such as Femi Kuti and the Positive Force and DJ Rekha of Basement Bhangra.
