Things to do in Baltimore this week 9/3/18

Oh boy, this week is packed full of fun! I hope I can make it to everything. A bizarre event that you want to check out is the Fourth Annual Baltimore Taxidermy Open at Walter’s Art Museum. It’s hard to describe so you should probably just go. One of my favorite events to attend is year is Hampdenfest because Toilet Bowl Races, duh! The Little Italy Madonnari Arts Festival is going on all weekend, I’ll be stopping by the final day. Also the CRS & Baltimore Orioles 75,000 Meal Challenge is Sunday morning. Consider going or donating before your day becomes consumed by football.

The Big Lebowski at the Senator Theatre
1PM – 3PM
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Rd, Baltimore
“This comic update of the world crystallised by Raymond Chandler charts the disastrous involvement of laidback dopehead Jeff ‘the Dude’ Lebowski (Bridges) in a kidnapping case involving the wife of his millionaire namesake (Huddleston). The Dude is hired as bagman and of course finds himself increasingly at risk as he makes his way about an LA populated by the rich, strange and dangerous. Nor do his bowling buddies help: Donny (Buscemi) is frankly several pins short of a strike; while Walter (Goodman), a crazed, irascible Viet vet, is so determined to stand his (and the Dude’s) ground that he causes more trouble than he solves. Immensely inventive and entertaining…a prime example of the Coens’ effortless brand of stylistic and storytelling brilliance. Thanks to Roger Deakins’ gleaming camerawork, T-Bone Burnett’s eclectic soundtrack selection and the Coens’ typically pithy dialogue, it looks and sounds wonderful. Moreover, far from being shallow pastiche, it’s actually about something: what it means to be a man, to be a friend, and to be a ‘hero’ for a particular time and place.” (Geoff Andrew TimeOut)

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
In 2017, punk rock pioneers, the Dead Boys, celebrated the 40th anniversary of their landmark first album Young, Loud and Snotty with a worldwide tour and special re-recording of the record. Formed in Cleveland in 1976, the Dead Boys were one of the first American acts to combine the proto-punk fervor of bands like the Stooges and the New York Dolls with a new level of intense energy. Their 1977 debut LP was a pivotal album in the birth of hardcore punk and produced one of the first great punk anthems, “Sonic Reducer.” After one more album, the band split in 1979. They reunited for a few gigs in the 80s, but following the death of lead vocalist Stiv Bators in 1990, the band members went their separate ways except for two brief reunions in 2004 and 2005. The return of the Dead Boys began with guitarist Cheetah Chrome.

Mount Vernon Place: Stories of Slavery and Emancipation with the Maryland Historical Society
10AM – 12PM
Baltimore Heritage
11 1/2 West Chase St, Baltimore
Around Mount Vernon Place, memorials in bronze and marble honor slave-holders – George Washington, John Eager Howard, and until recently, Roger B. Taney. No statue recognizes the labor of the enslaved people who worked and lived in the neighborhood’s handsome antebellum houses. The stories of slavery and emancipation on Mount Vernon Place are far from simple, however, including the monument to the Marquis de Lafayette, a hero of the American Revolution who personally urged George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to emancipate their slaves and abolish slavery in the United States. The tour will start with a guided walk through the Maryland Historical Society’s newly refreshed Divided Voices: Maryland in the Civil War exhibit. David Armenti, Director of Education at the Society will provide participants an in-depth look at how the complex history of slavery and freedom for African Americans impacted the country before, during and after the war. Then, Eli Pousson of Baltimore Heritage will take the group for a short stroll around Mt. Vernon uncovering the lives of enslaved people and slave-owners with stories from violent politics of the Civil War to the revolutionary changes of emancipation.

Gabriel Kahane at Creative Alliance
7:30PM – 10:30PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
The day after the 2016 presidential election, singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane boarded a train at Penn Station and traveled 8,980 miles around the continental U.S. with no phone or internet access, talking to dozens of strangers in an attempt to better understand his country and fellow citizens. The resulting album, Book of Travelers, marks Gabriel’s debut for Nonesuch Records. By turns sprawling and intimate, this collection of songs is at once a prayer for empathy and reconciliation, as well as an unflinching examination of the complex and often troubled history of the United States.
