Things to do in Baltimore this week 8/27/18

A long weekend is coming up, yes! Tons of fun going on and since the weather isn’t going to melt your face off it is finally safe to go outside again. Brews and Board Games at The Windup Space is on Tuesday. I usually pass through for a while. It’s a fun way to meet new people. The Baltimore Comedy Festival is going on through Labor Day so be sure to check it out. I’m headed to the beach again, probably the last time this season. Go have some fun before everyone heads back to school!

Sweaty Eyeballs: Alice
7PM – 9PM
The SNF Parkway / Maryland Film Festival
5 West North Avenue, Baltimore
Sweaty Eyeballs Animation and the SNF Parkway present a special screening of the 1989 reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, ALICE. When Alice follows the White Rabbit into Wonderland, so begins this dream expedition into the astonishing landscape of childhood, through many dangerous adventures, and ultimately to Alice’s trial before the King and Queen of Hearts. Czech animator Jan Svankmajer has created a masterpiece of cinema, a strikingly original interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Svankmajer’s ALICE remains true to the absurdity of Carroll’s original, but bears the stamp of his own distinctive style and obsessions. Combining techniques of animation and live action, he gives a new and fascinating dimension to the classic tale of childhood fantasies.

The SNF Parkway / Maryland Film Festival
5 West North Avenue, Baltimore
CULT CRAVINGS is a series of cult classic and underground hit films hosted at the SNF Parkway Theatre. Join us in August for three screenings of historical documentary THE ATOMIC CAFE. Armageddon has never been so darkly funny as in THE ATOMIC CAFE. This 1982 cult classic juxtaposes Cold War history, propaganda, music and culture, seamlessly crafted from government-produced educational and training films, newsreels and advertisements. Taken together, these sources cheerily instruct the public on how to live in the Atomic Age, how to survive a nuclear attack (!) … and how to fight and win a nuclear war. As a U.S. Army training film advises, “Viewed from a safe distance, the atomic bomb is one of the most beautiful sights ever seen by man.” Returning to theaters in a sparkling 4K digital restoration created by IndieCollect, THE ATOMIC CAFE is an absurdist blast from the past that would be downright laughable if it weren’t so eerily relevant to our fake news present.

The Rogues are rounded out by world renowned violinist Daisy Castro and swing master Eric Heveron-Smith on the upright bass. The Resonant Rogues have toured relentlessly over their 5-year history, covering most of North America and Europe. This jaunt will take them through both new and old favorite cities throughout the North East USA, and into Canada with a couple of dates in Montreal.
Drawing inspiration from the great jazz violinists of the past – Stephane Grappelli, Stuff Smith and Svend Assmussen, and Didier Lockwood, to name a few – Baltimore based violinists Matt Andrews and Nataly Merezhuk came together in 2017 to form their own innovative jazz violin ensemble.

The Big Lebowski at the Senator Theatre
Aug 29-Sept 4
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Rd, Baltimore
“This comic update of the world crystallised by Raymond Chandler charts the disastrous involvement of laidback dopehead Jeff ‘the Dude’ Lebowski (Bridges) in a kidnapping case involving the wife of his millionaire namesake (Huddleston). The Dude is hired as bagman and of course finds himself increasingly at risk as he makes his way about an LA populated by the rich, strange and dangerous. Nor do his bowling buddies help: Donny (Buscemi) is frankly several pins short of a strike; while Walter (Goodman), a crazed, irascible Viet vet, is so determined to stand his (and the Dude’s) ground that he causes more trouble than he solves. Immensely inventive and entertaining…a prime example of the Coens’ effortless brand of stylistic and storytelling brilliance. Thanks to Roger Deakins’ gleaming camerawork, T-Bone Burnett’s eclectic soundtrack selection and the Coens’ typically pithy dialogue, it looks and sounds wonderful. Moreover, far from being shallow pastiche, it’s actually about something: what it means to be a man, to be a friend, and to be a ‘hero’ for a particular time and place.” (Geoff Andrew TimeOut)
