I’ve lost the fight with the humidity this week. It’s un-straightened hair and boho-chic clothing from here on out. Plenty going on this week here in Baltimore. Thursday is the night that will give you FOMO. Way too many fun things happening. I decided to attend the Summer Soiree at Sagamore Pendry. Somehow I’ve yet to visit the space and this looked like the perfect opportunity. On Friday I’m donning my best surrealist garb and attending Illuminated (A Surrealist Garden Party) at The Peale Center. They always have the most unusual events there. Can you believe August is almost over? Where has the summer gone?

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

A Night Of Japanese New Wave & Obscure
10:30PM – 1:30AM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
In the 70’s and 80’s, a phenomenon unprecedented occurred in Japan. After years of turmoil after World War II, the Land of the Rising Sun underwent an immense transformation to become the second largest economy in the world. The Japanese Economic Miracle led to a strong middle class and a fruitful period of growth for the Japanese people. Through this prosperity came a wave of innovative music that was years ahead of its time. Due to Japan’s secluded culture most of the music from this time period goes unknown and under-appreciated by the west. In an ideal world Yellow Magic Orchestra, Midori Takada, Yasuaki Shimizu, Akiko Yano, Haruomi Hosono would be household names just like Brian Eno, Lou Reed, David Bowie, New Order. It is time to celebrate these artists and present them the attention they deserve in the west.” — DOKI DOKI JEFF

The Young Novelists: When they first met, Graydon James and Laura Spink had no idea that they would be married one day — much less touring the world together as The Young Novelists. Since the band’s inception in 2009, they’ve played stages across the U.S. and Canada, released three full-length albums, won numerous awards and continuous praise for their unmatched, effortless harmonies.

Vegan Takeover IV
Aug 24-25, 5PM – 11PM
Paulie Gee’s Hampden
3535 Chestnut Ave, Baltimore
Once again, as part of Baltimore Vegan Restaurant Week, we are having a conplete Vegan Takeover on Friday, August 24th from 5pm to 11pm. Our intention as Baltimore’s vegan pizza headquarters is to show others the power in this growing, important part of the eating population and that you can no longer just throw together any combination of vegetables and pass it off as a suitable vegan “option”. More restaurants need to give more thought and consideration to vegans. No meat or dairy will be stocked on the pizza line… meat or dairy pizzas will not be available for the entire evening. To our meat and dairy eating friends, we create all of our vegan pies with the goal that anyone, vegan or not, will enjoy them. Please come join in on the fun. These nights are typically, by far, our most diverse crowd from any metric (age, income, racial, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation) and we invite everyone to come join in on a fabulous night of good eats and people.

In 1992, artist and educator, Gina Pierleoni began a series of mixed media “faces” that expressed the perspective that everyone deserves to be seen and heard. During the intervening 25+ years, Pierleoni created nearly 300 portraits of people across the spectrum of familiarity. Whether friends or strangers, these images push past labels and judgements as they question perception, habit, and bias in how we place ourselves in relation to others. What Makes Us (Us) is the first time most of this series of mixed media pieces have been displayed in one place. FREE
