Things to do in Baltimore this week 8/13/18

I’ve just about had it with all the rain in the forecast every week. Summer is not supposed to be this soggy. It’s also making it hard for us to accomplish any outdoor work on our house as we get it ready to sell. So I’ll be sticking to indoor events this week. Not much on the schedule yet but my Sunday is packed. I’m going to see the Glenn Miller Orchestra at The Modell Lyric that afternoon. Love me some good swing music. Then I’m off to the Odd Lots Wine Dinner with The Wine and Food Society of Baltimore, because nothing is more fun than sampling 14+ wines with delicious food. I hope you can find something on this list to keep you busy too!

Before we begin, I’m going to share a cause that is near and dear to me. I hope you will be able to participate!

CRS & Baltimore Orioles 75,000 Meal Challenge
Sunday, September 9, 10AM & 12PM
Catholic Relief Services and the Baltimore Orioles are fighting hunger together and need your help. To celebrate CRS’ 75th anniversary, help us raise enough money to send 75,000 meals to vulnerable people in Burkina Faso, West Africa. When you register as a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to package meals alongside former Orioles players and the Oriole Bird. Space is limited. Join us as we knock one out of the park and together, build a future free from hunger. Fundraising teams that raise $500 (to fund at least 1,000 meals) will receive 10 tickets to the Orioles game against the Houston Astros on Saturday, September 29 at 7:05pm. Participating fundraising teams can earn two additional tickets to the game for every additional $100 raised. Registered today to fund raise and join this fun event!

Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

Alfred Hitchcock – Dial M for Murder in 3D at the Senator
7:30PM – 9:15PM
The Senator Theatre

The London-set story, which finds Ray Milland’s suave former tennis pro first plotting the murder of his wife (Grace Kelly at her most fashionably fragile) before framing her for another, remains one of Hitch’s most absorbingly airtight: its trick is to generate considerable suspense while withholding nothing from the audience. Its pleasures are not profound ones, but there’s enough dimensionality up on the screen to compensate.” (Guy Lodge, TimeOut London)

Andreas Arnold expresses himself through a musical kaleidoscope that reflects the classical traditions of his homeland Germany, jazz from the US where he has lived for the last decade, and music from the Mediterranean, in particular the Spanish art form of flamenco. Through this unique fusion, Arnold proves that purity is not defined by any one culture or style but transpires when one finds his voice to express his personal experience in society, art, and life.

Pirate Macbeth: A Fundraising Event
7PM – 12AM
Cohesion Theatre Company
923 S. East Avenue, Baltimore
Come experience Shakespeare’s Macbeth like you’ve never seen before, and help raise money for Cohesion Theatre Company in the process! Cohesion is putting on our biggest most fantastical fundraising event ever, and you are invited to this spectacular evening! There will be food, drinks, music, dancing, raffles, silent auction, and the centerpiece of the evening: Pirate Macbeth!!! Jeff Miller has adapted Shakespeare’s classic of power and ambition for the high seas, and we at Cohesion are hoisting the colors high to bring you a pirate-themed evening full of adventure, murder, sea shanties, creatures of the deep, and sirens songs, all in support of the artistic programing of Cohesion Theatre Company!
The evening begins at 7pm with a cocktail hour that will include frozen specialty cocktails like the “Keel-Haul”: Rita’s Italian Ice mixed with rum, as well as local delicacies from neighborhood restaurants, silent auction items from local business and theatres, and live music from the cast of Pirate Macbeth.
About 8pm, the performance of Shakespeare’s Pirate Macbeth will begin, as the audience is immersed into the high seas world of Scottish conflicts for the crown, and a mysterious group of sirens and sea creatures who twist the fate of the noble Thane. We’ll see who makes it out with their heads intact, and who is forced to walk the plank and face the deep crushing abyss of Davey Jones’ Locker!!!
After the show, guests are invited to stay as the party kicks in to high gear with dancing and late night pirate shinanigans as we celebrate the close of Season 4 at Cohesion Theatre Company, and look to the future! All guests are encouraged to come in their best pirate or sea creature themed regalia!

Lindy 500 2018
Aug 16-19
MOBTOWN BALLROOM -861 Washington Blvd – Dances and Beg/Int Track
IDEAL ARTS SPACE- 905 W 36th St – Int/Adv Track
PAULIE GEE’S- 3535 Chestnut Ave
We should probably call it Lindy 5,000 this year, as we’re making a big jump–suffice it to say that the lil’ local event of yesteryear has been pumping serious iron.
WORKSHOPS: We’re doing things a little differently, placing an intense focus on solo jazz, personal movement, and putting the dancing back into your Lindy Hop. We will offer two levels: Intermediate and Advanced. Intermediate track includes a Lindy Hop boot camp followed by a wealth of solo jazz classes. Advanced track focuses on using your knowledge of solo jazz in your Lindy Hop and auditions are required.
FRESH BLOOD INITIATIVE: We strive to shake things up, so this year we are adding Friday classes that will be taught by amateur instructors. These classes will be selected from submissions made by you, the people, in order to give new instructors the experience of teaching at an event and students the opportunity to learn from people with fresh ideas. We value the crazy levels of experience and expertise in the professional Lindy Hop scene, but we also acknowledge that professionalism can sometimes lead to a homogenous national style.
COMPETITIONS: This year, we’re bringing back the strictly Lindy contest, the solo jazz contest, and the endurance contest. All levels welcome.
MUSIC: We haven’t wrangled all the details yet, so we aren’t showing our hand. Suffice it to say, we are extremely pumped for the musical lineup this year, because it is something that has never been done before in Baltimore. The live music is going to be intense, fresh, and there’s going to be a lot more of it.
