On Saturday my friends and I are doing our own 12 Bars of Christmas in Fells Point. Wish me luck. Design Conversation #96 focuses on the role of designers in research, advocacy, and activism around public space. It features presentations exploring McKeldin Plaza’s past, present, and future. Student design ideas from the University of Maryland landscape architecture program will be on display. The D Convo will be filmed for a short video documenting the research findings and community dialogue. The video is funded by an AIA National initiative (Blueprint for Better Communities) and may be distributed by they, AIA Baltimore, and NDC in further conversations about McKeldin Plaza.

The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come send Scrooge off on a journey of redemption and put us all in the holiday spirit. Baltimore’s favorite holiday classic is in its fifth year. Written by Ian Gallanar, adapted from Charles Dickens, and directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor, “A Christmas Carol” is family-friendly, open to the general public, and appropriate for all ages. Our theatre has a playroom, where families may go if a small child feels wiggly or needs a short break. At the end of the play, the actors come out to meet the audience for taking selfies.

After nine-months of construction, the time machine has now completed numerous successful tests, and we are thrilled to now offer Time Travel Tours to the general public, as well as researchers, educators and historians. The Escapement Time Travel Agency has been set up inside the Peale, to house the time machine, manage Time Travel Tours, as well as distill the fuel necessary for travel to the past. Once the 200-year time machine has been activated, time travelers are invited to visit Rembrandt Peale’s study in 1818 and explore the many wonders that await them. BIG Time – How do you know when you’ve truly succeeded? The answer is when the Baltimore Improv Group invites you to have your life memorialized in a series of made up, totally unprepared comedy scenes celebrating you! Come join a hand picked cast of BIG’s best improvisers as they comedically revere some of Baltimore’s most important movers and shakers. Don Palmer began his career in music and arts at Pomona College where he was a jazz and blues dj and the demented programmer of the COOP—the student union. After a brief hitchhike across West Africa, he relocated to Madison, WI where he was a dj on WORT- and writer for and editor of a couple of weeklies. In the early 1980s, he moved to NYC to work with Pete Seeger’s Sing Out Magazine and NYC Mayor Ed Koch’s press office. Later he would write speeches for the Brooklyn Borough President, join the New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA), and publish over 100 articles on jazz, blues, world, and the early days of rap and hip hop music in the Village Voice, the New York Times, and others. Now retired, he consults with the Maryland Arts Council, serves on the community board of WNYC and the donor advisory board of Single Carrot Theatre, and raises money for Creative Alliance, Maryland NARAL, and Bolton Hill’s Social Action Task Force.

After nine-months of construction, the time machine has now completed numerous successful tests, and we are thrilled to now offer Time Travel Tours to the general public, as well as researchers, educators and historians. The Escapement Time Travel Agency has been set up inside the Peale, to house the time machine, manage Time Travel Tours, as well as distill the fuel necessary for travel to the past. Once the 200-year time machine has been activated, time travelers are invited to visit Rembrandt Peale’s study in 1818 and explore the many wonders that await them. Returning by popular demand! Episode Six of The Institute of Visionary History and the Archives of the Deep Now. This self-contained episode is an 8-hour durational performance. You may chose the length of your stay. Two obscure aristocrats are fated to dine together indefinitely over the course of an evening that will not cease. Cursed with abundance, they chew away the hours, their food and drink complemented with the bitter fruits of their recollections; spiced with regret and desire, mellowed with well-worn stories. Any attempt to exhaust the inexhaustible is doomed to fail. But like a finely cured meat there is pleasure to be had in consuming the decay and even more in sharing it with whom you may. Actualized by Francisco Benavides and Lisi Stoessel.
As a set of stories are told and re-told over the course of eight (yes, 8) hours, the audience has a choice: Stay for an hour and experience one course of a larger meal? Stay for a longer stretch as the stories evolve and devolve? Drop in and out over the course of the day? Purchase your tickets accordingly. The Institute will arrange a special debriefing area for this episode where you can continue to view the experiment once your time in the main space is up. You will be allowed to remain in the debriefing area for as long as you wish. All attendees will be invited to return at 8pm to celebrate that which we have wrought.

After some rumpus around there, we regroup and head back to DKD to do whatever we do. Please wear a mask or some kind of costume. There is no “show” per se. Our lauf is the show. It’s something to be part of, not watch! If not a krampus, how about a healthy milk-fed mountain maiden in need of a spanking! There is no wrong way to be a krampus here. Baltimore Krampuses (Krampii?) range from the whimsical to the truly frightening-sometimes in the same costume! If you know you’ve been bad, you can add your name to naughty list before we head out to ensure you get your proper punishment at one of the spanking stops during the lauf! Speaking of spankings, this is a family event. No bullies. No blue meanies! It’s fun to interact with the citizenry , but don’t intentionally traumatize any one. Krampus is watching! Sometimes Krampuses exchange wee gifties or hand out candy to bewildered onlookers. I like to step into shops and look in restaurant windows!

When, at the last minute, Charley’s aunt must cancel her visit, leaving the girls without a chaperone, Jack and Charley quickly convince their friend, Fancourt Babberley, to don a wig, a skirt, and a feminine air. All seems to be solved, until the real aunt turns up, and hilarity ensues. A classic farce for the whole family!

A delight for all ages, “A Christmas Carol” (with a Baltimore twist) celebrates local history and Chesapeake charm while staying true to the traditional tale. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come send Scrooge off on a journey of redemption and put us all in the holiday spirit. Baltimore’s favorite holiday classic is in its fifth year. Written by Ian Gallanar, adapted from Charles Dickens, and directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor, “A Christmas Carol” is family-friendly, open to the general public, and appropriate for all ages. Our theatre has a playroom, where families may go if a small child feels wiggly or needs a short break. At the end of the play, the actors come out to meet the audience for taking selfies.

Original gifts include jewelry, illustrations, paintings, prints, posters, sculptures, mosaics, stationery, T-shirts, ceramics, book arts, toys and wrapping paper. Visitors can talk one-on-one with artists and designers about their work while enjoying the market’s lively atmosphere and supporting the local economy. Mounted Tropicals Workshop

Learn how to mount a tropical of your choice on salvaged wood from Oak Hill Sawmill! Each participant will receive a board pre-drilled with screws that is ready for mounting. We’ll have a variety of low-light and bright-light tropicals to choose from! Whichever plant you choose will be suited to stay on the board for a few years before needing to be replanted (we will be using treated wood that is able to sustain regular watering). Participants will also receive 15% off plants during the workshop! $55 ticket includes all materials. Please do not bring your own wood for mounting. For beverages during the workshop, feel free to BYOB!

Bread and Puppet’s Grasshopper Rebellion Circus

The Grasshopper Rebellion Circus is a large-scale puppet spectacle that explains and teaches riot and rebellion against intolerable situations with the help of state of the art paper-maché weaponry and the appropriate riotous Bread and Puppet Brass Band. B&P director, Peter Schumann, says of The Grasshopper Rebellion Circus: “Tigers roar, apes drum their chests, horses neigh, and celestial grasshoppers teach ICE agents the basics steps of grasshopper rebellion dancing. A paradise investigation team analyses the earthling’s relationship to paradise, while major representatives of Mother Earth attend a festive puerto rican dance of liberation from natural and political disaster.” After the performance Bread and Puppet will serve its famous free sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Bread and Puppet’s Cheap Art Emporium (art made by puppeteers) and Bread and Puppet Press (books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners made at BP) will be for sale. Suggested donation $10-$25 but no one turned away for lack of funds.
