Things to do in Baltimore this week 1/7/19

After some much needed rest I am back to grind. I’ll be busy with planning work events during the week but the weekend will be my fun time! On Friday I’m going to Til Death Do Us Part by The Murder Mystery Company. I hope I’m smart enough to figure out who the murderer is! On Saturday I’m stopping by the Harbor Point Ice Festival before eating dinner at a Baltimore Winter Restaurant Week location followed by the Second Annual Monologue Slam at Fells Point Corner Theatre. Sunday will probably be another Baltimore Winter Restaurant Week adventure. ALl the things, all the food! How is 2019 treating you so far?

He taught himself the guitar at a young age on a homemade instrument. Mdou traveled the road to Libya, where he worked odd jobs. As chance had, he met some now-famous Tuareg guitarists and furthered his musical studies. He returned home with a guitar and a dream. In 2013, Mdou released his first international album, Afelan, rocking and raw sessions recorded live at his hometown in Niger. This was followed by the 2014 vinyl release of Anar. In 2015, he starred in the first-ever Tuareg language film, a fictional story of a guitarist struggling to make it against all odds in Agadez. Dvasia: new works by Linas Garsys at Metro Gallery
7PM – 10PM
Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
Dvasia (Lithuanian): ghost, spirit; soul; mind; a mental disposition; manner; conscience; meaning; breath. Wraith; demon, imp; the holy spirit; comforter, zeitgeist. ‘Dvasia’ has many meanings in Lithuanian. In folklore it can be used to describe any spirit being or supernatural force that haunts, torments or influences people, but it also can be used to describe a person’s state of mind, demeanor, or a general mood. I focused on the various incarnations of the multiple meanings: between joy and anguish. Omens totems, and symbolism that we use to cope while building our own mythologies between the seen and unseen. These moments and instances help us create a guide for existence and survival. Serving as bridges between warnings and blessings, offering depth to the human experience.

FILM | Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Don’t Get Trouble in Your Mind
7:30PM – 10:30PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
The Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Story is a documentary portrait of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band from Raleigh, North Carolina, and their mentor, fiddler Joe Thompson (1919—2012). The film captures how three musicians from the hip-hop generation embraced a 19th Century genre and took it to new heights, winning a Grammy in 2010. The story of the band’s meteoric rise, from busking on the street to playing major festivals is punctuated and informed by the history of the banjo’s origins in Africa, and the untold story of how blacks and whites collaborated to create the earliest forms of American popular music. Filmmaker John Whitehead followed the band from their coming together through their breakup, making for an emotionally satisfying journey as well as a spectacular musical one. Featuring Q&A with filmmaker John Whitehead.

Closer to the Sun
6PM – 9PM
Gallery 1448
1448 E Baltimore St, Baltimore
Artists Elizabeth Lehmann and her son, Daniel Brown, find common ground at their joint show, “Closer to the Sun” which opens Friday, January 11. A permanent resident of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Elizabeth creates pieces that are defined by the environment of the Mid-Atlantic coastline, both natural and man-made. Found shell formations are repopulated with sculpted versions of the oysters that used to inhabit them. Upon closer inspection one does a double-take: each has a tiny human face. These small abandoned living spaces are in contrast to Elizabeth’s photos of the derelict homes around Accomack County. Shells themselves, they are captured as they are being pulled back into a natural state by the action of weather and time. Daniel, a resident of Baltimore City, finds refuge in moments at the water. He captures instants in a fluid state, with loved ones, sun and coastline. Working primarily from photographs, his meticulous technique seeks to recast the moment into a physical presence.

Til Death Do Us Part by The Murder Mystery Company
7PM – 10PM
Ikaros Restaurant
4901 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, but the wedding bells aren’t ringing for this not-so-happy couple when a member of the wedding party is murdered! With a raging bridezilla and an unenthused groom on the scene, it may be happily never after in this nuptial nightmare. Trade clues with your guests and help the hapless couple figure out whodunnit so they can say I do before the wedding hour passes them by! The bride and groom aren’t picky, so you can wear just about whatever you’d like. In fact, we encourage you to wear your own wedding dress or the most ridiculous wedding attire you can come up with. It’ll make their special day that much more special, so long as they actually get the chance to walk down the aisle!

In the Closet by Third Wall Productions
Jan 11-27, Fr & Sat 8PM, Sun 3PM
Function Coworking Community
4709 Harford Rd, Baltimore
The show takes place inside both a literal and metaphorical closet. It opens with three gay men entering the closet for vastly different reasons. Man #1 is struggling with the long-term illness (cancer) of his partner. Man #2 is struggling with aging in a community he’s finding quite superficial. Man #3, a rape victim, was just told by the prosecutor he needs to act more straight on the stand. All three men are soon joined by John, who runs into the closet just after his first gay sexual encounter. The four men explore the varied reasons one might closet oneself in this cross-generational look at being in the closet, leaving the audience to wonder: can any one of them walk out?

Volunteering Untapped- Second Chance & Baltimore Toolbank
10AM – 1PM
Second Chance (1700 Ridgely St)
Baltimore Community ToolBank (1224 Wicomico St)
When the weather outside is frightful, we bundle up and get to work in two of our favorite city warehouses!! For our January event we will be partnering with Second Chance and the Baltimore Toolbank for two great events!
Second Chance – Help an organization that gives people and building materials a second chance. Instead of destroying, they deconstruct homes and buildings to sell the materials and use the money to hire people who deserve a second chance at life, most of whom were incarcerated at one point. Before the volunteering begins, you will be inspired by the story of an employee. Then we get to work in their 200,000 square foot warehouse pulling nails from wood, measuring windows, organizing inventory, processing recent donations, and more so everything can be sold and reused and they can continue hiring people worthy of a second chance.
Baltimore Community ToolBank – One of our favorite organizations and best partners, the ToolBank rents tools to Baltimore’s nonprofit community, giving organizations like VU access to thousands of tools without having to buy or store them. So much of our impact around Baltimore happens with ToolBank tools in our hands and now we have a chance to give back to them and help increase capacity for all of the nonprofits they serve. We will be in their warehouse building wheelbarrows and improving their equipment.
Both groups will come together for food and drinks at Brewer’s Cask in Federal Hill. There you’ll find food and drink specials, and heat! Looking forward to seeing you all in 2019. Let’s start the new year off right!

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, But Staged
5PM – 7PM
Strand Theater Company
5426 Harford Rd., Baltimore
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, But Staged is part of the Strand Theater Company’s ongoing series of workshops and performances dedicated to empowering women to tell their own stories. Using the template of consciousness-raising groups that sprung out of the Women’s Movement, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, But Staged creates a safe space for women-identified participants to find strength and community through sharing personal narratives. Each workshop participant has served as the director of their own show and each story has been created with the input of the entire ensemble. The performance, crafted over the course of forty-eight hours, is an intimate, raw, and a wholly feminist selection of stories representing the individual perspectives of each group member. Audience members are encouraged to join in the feminist festivities and warm-up with the artist-participants before the show, shout, dance, and drink wine.

Jazz: Todd Marcus Quintet
7PM – 9PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Though use of bass clarinet in jazz typically leans heavily towards avant-garde and free-jazz styles, Marcus’ straight-ahead playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Marcus balances his music career by running Intersection of Change, a nonprofit addressing poverty related issues in his Baltimore neighborhood. The organization runs a community arts program for children & adults, a recovery program for women overcoming drug addiction, and an urban farm, and has achieved significant community revitalization by renovating abandoned building and vacant lots.

  1. Jean Marie Adrian says:

Very glad you included Mdou Moctar’s show tonight at Creative Alliance. Artist like him show a very different image of Africa and Niger in particular. For once we will forget that Niger is the poorest country in the world (no it is not Haiti!)
