Love Letters
7PM – 9PM
Baltimore Center Stage
700 North Calvert Street, Baltimore
Join us for a special benefit evening to celebrate love, friendship, and the lost art of letter writing. This uniquely imaginative piece offers theater at its most simple yet most compelling, consisting only of two people reading the letters exchanged over a 50-year friendship. Yet from childhood birthday parties and sleep away camps through the first halting steps into adulthood to the promise and pitfalls of professions, families, and responsibilities, we follow childhood besties Andrew and Melissa on the bumpy but fulfilling road of Life—in which they share, in writing and with sometimes startling frankness, almost every up and down along the way. Of Gurney’s timeless play about friendship, hope, disappointment, loss, and abiding love, actor Brian Dennehy said, “You cannot stage a play more simply than this, and yet it’s about everything in life. First love, loss of opportunities, loss of life, loss of love.” And who better to bring to life this longtime friendship—with all its honesty and abundant humor—than notorious pals Michael Ross and Rhea Feikin. Admission $100. Champagne and dessert reception to follow.

February Taste & Tour
6PM – 7PM
The Engineers Club
11 West Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our new Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail or sparkling water.

Derrick Michaels Adult Content- For Hopeless Romantics
8PM & 9:30PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
Derrick Michaels is an inexorable force in the creative music community, whose sonorous tenor saxophone tone and dedication to narrative improvisation. A personalized repertoire of songs from the Great American Songbook, this is an unapologetic celebration of romance and tenderness in the Millennial Age, and a Valentine’s Day tribute to the expressive beauty of the tenor saxophone throughout its history in jazz. To evolve this tradition into the 21st century, the rhythm section must play an equal role in the expression of the music. Reaching beyond the storied “soloist with rhythm section” paradigm allows the classic saxophone/piano quartet formation to bloom into an improvised chamber ensemble of impressive dynamic capacity.

Charm City Bluegrass joins Creative Alliance in presenting a Valentine’s show one of the brightest stars of bluegrass, mandolinist extraordinaire, Sierra Hull. Come with your loved one, or the ones you love, for a bluegrass night to remember. Sierra Hull has been recognized from age 11 as a virtuoso mandolin-player, astonishing audiences and fellow-musicians alike. Now a seasoned touring musician nearing her mid-20s, Hull has delivered her most inspired, accomplished, and mature recorded work to date; no small feat. Weighted Mind is a landmark achievement, not just in Sierra Hull’s career, but in the world of folk-pop, bluegrass, and acoustic music overall. With instrumentation comprised largely of mandolin, bass, and vocals, this is genre-transcending music at its best. Hull speaks eloquently, in her challenging and sensitive originals, her heartfelt vocals, and once again breaks new ground on the mandolin. Béla Fleck special guests on banjo on two tracks and duo partner, Ethan Jodziewicz, not only anchors the record on bass, but introduces us to a major new instrumental voice.

Disney Newsies
Feb 8-17, Fri-Sun 8PM – 10PM
Third Wall Productions
1108 Providence Road, Baltimore
Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. The New York newsies – boys and girls who sold newspapers on the street – went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for the chance to earn a livable wage. The Spanish-American War made New Yorkers hungry for headlines, and circulation boomed as a result. Once the war ended, people were less inclined to buy newspapers – war was bad for the world, but great for the newspaper business. The strike was the result of the newspaper publishers refusing to lower the newsies’ cost-per-paper back down to the pre-war prices. The newsies were not willing to pay more for their papers to make up for a lack of headlines, so they decided to strike – their goal was to make the newspaper tycoons treat them as legitimate members of the business.

Pygmalion – Spotlighters
Feb 15-Mar 10, Fri & Sat 8PM – 10:30PM. Sun 2PM – 4:30PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
The sparkling wit and biting humor of Shaw’s script has made Pygmalion into a classic which has endured for over a century, still speaking to us about the false constructs of social class and wowing us with a portrayal of a strong woman who overcomes the conventions of her time. Eliza Doolittle, an intelligent, but poor woman who sells flowers . . . crosses paths with Henry Higgins, a boorish, insensitive, but brilliant linguist who studies phonetics. He realizes we are all equal under the skin and that social class is a matter of skilled behavior. What starts as a phonetic experiment becomes a social experiment. As these two headstrong people spar, we follow Eliza through to her emotional and financial independence, as Eliza herself realizes she was already a lady.
