Things to do in Baltimore this week 4/8/19

The Baltimore Farmers’ Market & Bazaar opened today so you know this week is already starting out well. I’m keeping it pretty chill this week. Less focus on events and trying to spend more time with my friends. I’m introducing my friends to Orto on Thursday. I can’t wait! The food at Orto is so delicious, it’s a great spot. On Saturday I’m going to see a few art shows I missed the openings of last week and grabbing a bite to eat at the Grand Opening of Refocused. Next Sunday is going to be a big day. My friends and I are having a fondue party. We are all bringing over the fondue sets we got as wedding gifts and rarely use to have the fondue party of all fondue parties before we hunker down to watch Game of Thrones. How are you celebrating the premiere of GOT?

Walk the Murals of Station North
10AM – 10:45AM OR 11AM – 1PM
Greenmount Coffee Lab
1400 Greenmount Avenue, Baltimore
For our tour, we will meet at the Greenmount Coffee Lab at Open Works Bmore, a maker space with a parking lot and coffeehouse. Don’t miss the electronic photo booth on the south wall in the lobby (it’s free!); a great way to commemorate your tour and the pic will be waiting in your email inbox. After guests have checked in, we will then walk to about 60 points of interest, seeing quite a lot of street art, but also learning the history of this often overlooked urban landscape. We will enjoy a walking a loop of about 2.5 miles with a small pit stop towards the end for refreshment before heading back to open works. On this walk, we will enjoy the alleyways, parks, and farms of the often underrated, but constantly surprising revitalized neighborhood of Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Locals and travelers alike will enjoy this very instagrammable look at a gem of a neighborhood. Depending on the size of the group and speed of walking the time for finishing might be slightly later. There are periodical trivia questions and easter eggs hidden along the way – be ready to get competitive and rewarded with candy!

Hotel RL (Baltimore)

In November 2012, Addison Rice and Jahnavi Newsom fell in love and formed The Love Sprockets… They dwelled in the Shire-like mountain town of Brattleboro, Vermont. On September 15th, 2013, Jahnavi and Addison embarked on a cross country bicycle trip, and rode from VT to Austin, TX with a bunch of instruments and their dog, Zoso. After 4 grueling, heart-and-mind-expanding months of pedaling and connecting with strangers, The Love Sprockets arrived in Austin Texas. After a year of playing music with Aaron Watson (upright bass) and Pete Van Dyke (drums and vocals) The Love Sprockets hit the studio in January 2015 with their wily sound engineer, Captain Red Beard, and recorded their first full-blown, no-holds-barred, unadulterated, panty-dropping album… [Nobody Wants To Die…]. The Love Sprockets recently moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where they are currently converting a 1991 Bluebird school bus into their gypsy home and tour bus!

April Taste & Tour
6PM – 7PM
The Engineers Club
11 West Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our new Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail or sparkling water.

Baltimore War Memorial
War Memorial Plaza, Baltimore
Yuko Kaseki is a Butoh dancer, choreographer and teacher, based in Berlin. This one-night-only solo performance is part of her residency with Submersive Productions at the Baltimore War Memorial as Movement Director for MASS/RABBLE. This butoh performance is inspired by Henry Darger’s fantasy world that juxtaposes innocence with violence. Sounds from real battles found on the Internet are contrasted with iconic corporeal movements that represent innocence. The work attempts to pose a question to the feeling of ambivalence towards systematic violence of belief that imposes powerlessness, and simultaneously reminds of brutal terror that characterizes our epoch.
