Things to do in Baltimore this week 4/15/19

Another week of awesome Spring weather coming at you. I’m super excited to attend the Spring Dinner at Milton Inn with The Wine and Food Society of Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday. It’s an annual dinner and it was so amazing last year, I can’t wait to see what is in store for this year. Later in the week I’m off to North Carolina to spend the weekend with family. Sad to miss all the awesome Baltimore Easter Brunch options though. I’m sure I’ll find something yummy to eat in Charlotte. Send me your recommendations if you have them!

Walk the Murals of Station North

For our tour, we will meet at the Greenmount Coffee Lab at Open Works Bmore, a maker space with a parking lot and coffeehouse. Don’t miss the electronic photo booth on the south wall in the lobby (it’s free!); a great way to commemorate your tour and the pic will be waiting in your email inbox. After guests have checked in, we will then walk to about 60 points of interest, seeing quite a lot of street art, but also learning the history of this often overlooked urban landscape. We will enjoy a walking a loop of about 2.5 miles with a small pit stop towards the end for refreshment before heading back to open works. On this walk, we will enjoy the alleyways, parks, and farms of the often underrated, but constantly surprising revitalized neighborhood of Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Locals and travelers alike will enjoy this very instagrammable look at a gem of a neighborhood. Depending on the size of the group and speed of walking the time for finishing might be slightly later. There are periodical trivia questions and easter eggs hidden along the way – be ready to get competitive and rewarded with candy!

We’ll discuss how it gives the city’s top official complete control of Baltimore, and why it may be the root cause of the recent Healthy Holly scandal. To do so we will take an in-depth look at the history and the laws that make the mayor so powerful. But we will also seek solutions on how those same laws can be changed and what a better system of governance looks like. And if people should take action and push for a charter amendment to reduce the power of the mayor. Real Talk Tho is an opportunity for people to discuss and debate real solutions to our city’s intractable problems. What would effective policy look like and how do we get it implemented? Simone Baron is a multifaceted musician whose work as a pianist, accordionist, conductor, arranger and composer strives to experiment and engage with a broad range of audiences, musical languages/traditions and art forms. Simone studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Tel Aviv University’s Buchmann School of Music. Her unique voice and re-imagination of the accordion’s possibilities have opened the door to cross-genre collaborations with dancers, actors, puppeteers, visual, and performance artists. Arco Belo, her current project, is a hybrid chamber jazz sextet with strings and percussion that features original compositions and innovative arrangements of works from different musical traditions.

Hi friends! SYRINGE has taken a break from local shows while we work on material for our upcoming full length album, to be recorded in May at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC. This will be our return gig, which doubles as a benefit gig created by us. As violence against LGBT people in the US increases, we wanted to reach out to folks in Baltimore and provide self defense items, at a show celebrating our community, our tenacity, and our lives. At this show, we will be taking sliding scale donations at the door ($8-$20) and have a table to give away items like pepper spray and batons. Additional money made from the door will go to a local LGBT centered organization, to be decided later on.
