Things to do in Baltimore this week 4/29/19

This is super late and not really complete but it’s been a very busy week. Lots of must do things going on. Make sure you check out the Charm City Comedy Festival, it starts on May 1. I’m hoping to go to Flower Mart at Mount Vernon Place on Friday. One of my favorite unusual Baltimore events is on Saturday. I love watching the 21st Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race from the American Visionary Art Museum. I like to watch them attend the water portion in Canton On Sunday I’m catching the last showing of Marooned! A Space Comedy by Alex and Olmsted at Theatre Project! So many things, so little time!

Monday, April 29

Walk the Murals of Station North
10AM – 10:45AM OR 11AM – 1PM
Greenmount Coffee Lab
1400 Greenmount Avenue, Baltimore
For our tour, we will meet at the Greenmount Coffee Lab at Open Works Bmore, a maker space with a parking lot and coffeehouse. Don’t miss the electronic photo booth on the south wall in the lobby (it’s free!); a great way to commemorate your tour and the pic will be waiting in your email inbox. After guests have checked in, we will then walk to about 60 points of interest, seeing quite a lot of street art, but also learning the history of this often overlooked urban landscape. We will enjoy a walking a loop of about 2.5 miles with a small pit stop towards the end for refreshment before heading back to open works. On this walk, we will enjoy the alleyways, parks, and farms of the often underrated, but constantly surprising revitalized neighborhood of Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Locals and travelers alike will enjoy this very instagrammable look at a gem of a neighborhood. Depending on the size of the group and speed of walking the time for finishing might be slightly later. There are periodical trivia questions and easter eggs hidden along the way – be ready to get competitive and rewarded with candy!

Janet Langhart Cohen’s Anne & Emmett
April 26 – May 4, Fri & Sat 7:30PM, Sat 2PM, Sun 3PM
Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center
2201 Argonne Dr., Baltimore
The play depicts an imagined conversation between Emmett Till, an African- American boy, and Anne Frank, a German Jewish girl. This conversation takes place in “Memory,” a non-specific afterlife or alternate dimension. Each was killed when he/she was a young teenager because of racial persecution and hatred. In their conversation, Anne and Emmett recount their lives and experiences, comparing and contrasting the events in their lives and deaths. Both children lived and perished in times of great turmoil and hatred for their people. Both children had big dreams for their future and were sources of pride and joy for their families. Anne Frank, one of the smallest but strongest voices of the Holocaust would have been 90 years old this year. Emmet Till, whose murder was the impetus of the Civil Rights Movement would be 78 years old. In Janet Langhart Cohen’s Anne & Emmett we experience the bright light of both young people that remain in the universe.

April 26 – May 26, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sat & Sun 2PM

This vital story asks us to remember a dark moment in world history through the eyes of a young girl: Poignant and powerful, Anne Frank’s hopes and dreams shine in her words penned while hiding during the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. This recent adaptation, containing more of Anne’s original writing and more forthright about the characters’ Judaism, makes this play more necessary than ever.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard at FPCT
April 5 – May 5, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Fells Point Corner Theatre
251 S Ann St, Baltimore
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. I’m so sorry you had to find out this way… From the imagination of one of the most celebrated modern playwrights comes the wildly energetic and nimble play on words, puns and Shakespeare. The absurd, existential comedy by Tom Stoppard features virtually every character who died in Hamlet. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is a dazzling high wire act balancing the monotony of being a bit player in someone else’s story and the profound meaning of simply being alive… or dead.

The Producers
May 3 – 12, Fr & Sat 8PM, Sun 4PM
Third Wall Productions
1108 Providence Road, Baltimore
The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history, thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive “Springtime for Hitler”), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends. The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!” (Not recommended for under 17.)

21st Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race
10AM – 6PM
American Visionary Art Museum
800 Key Hwy, Baltimore
From the American Visionary Art Museum: a race through Baltimore of wacky, imaginative, totally human-powered works of art, designed to compete over land, a mud pit, and the Inner Harbor, constructed out of used bicycles, gears, and parts, created by a lunatic genius who tinkers around in the garage or backyard (do you know this person?)! This year’s theme is “Wheel-ality TV,” inspired by our current mega-exhibit, PARENTING: An Art without a Manual. Pilots (“Kinetinauts”) compete for the most coveted GRAND MEDIOCRE EAST COAST CHAMPION AWARD (finishes right in the middle), and the highly prized NEXT TO THE LAST AWARD (finishes, well, next-to-last), and other serious trophies including ART, ENGINEERING, BEST BRIBES and more. Race starts at 10am at the American Visionary Art Museum (arrive early to take part in Opening Ceremony and Blessing of De Feet).
Great spots to see the vehicles:
– 1st Checkpoint atop Federal Hill (around 10:15am)
– The Water Entry at the boat ramp at Canton Waterfront Park (around 11am)
– The not-so-quick-Sand Pit in Patterson Park (1:15-3pm)
– The uphill Mud Pit in Patterson Park (1:15-3pm)
– and, of course, anywhere along the 15-mile route through Baltimore!

Folkal Point Series: The Tinklers and Bob Pyle
7:30PM – 10:30PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
The Tinklers! What can be said about The Tinklers??!! Wikipedia reports that “the group consists of Charles Brohawn and Chris Mason, both of whom sing, play guitar, and percussion instruments of varying degrees of quality (including cigar boxes, spoons, and other types of junk). Both members are also actively engaged in creating art in other mediums including visual art and books. Their music can be characterized as outsider music due to its lack of traditional musical skills and abilities including proficiency at their instruments and the ability to sing in tune. Come check these guys out – this may be their only outing in 2019 and it is a show you will never forget. They use poetry, elaborate development of lyrical and musical themes, and a disarming innocence of mission to create something truly unique and wonderful. They were the subject of an adoring documentary called “Everybody Loves The Tinklers.”

Weird Wine: A Peek Into the Curious World of Maryland Wine
1PM – 4PM
Union Collective
1700 W 41st St, Baltimore
The Maryland Wineries Association and Baltimore Magazine invite you to take a peek into the curious world of Maryland wine with a pop-up event featuring some very unique blends from over 20 of our local wine, cider and mead producers. Wine is typically made from grapes, cider from apples and mead from honey, but some of our Maryland winemakers have been pushing the envelope a bit lately with their craft. Habanero, dragonfruit, coffee, locust blossoms and fish peppers are just some of the odd ingredients you’ll find at this event. Some of the grapes used in these wines are unique as well: French-American hybrid grapes, Spanish grapes not typically grown here, and even some Russian varietals only identifiable by numbers and letters! Diving even deeper, some of these wines earned their unique title from the way the wine was processed or fermented—so expect to see pink wines, orange wines…and even a purple wine! We hope you’ll join us as we transform an unfinished space at Union Collective in Hampden into a whimsical wine experience.

We’ll start class with a guided visualization exercise, followed by instruction on how to create your own hand stitched journals, and a discussion on how to incorporate a daily gratitude writing practice into your life. You’ll walk away with two hand-bound gratitude notebooks, a toolkit for making journals outside of class, and the knowledge of how to embark on your daily gratitude journaling practice at home — great for staying grounded and focused despite the busy nature of our lives. Keep both journals, or keep one and give one away! Ticket price includes all materials needed to make two notebooks, along with a take-home tool kit for creating your own journals at home. This class is perfect for beginners and intermediate makers, or anyone who is interested in bookbinding, writing, meditation, and contemplative practices.
