Things to do in Baltimore this week 9/30/19

I was internally screaming by the time I got to all the weekend events of this post. Why? Well my poor husband is diligently working on his Master’s schoolwork across the room so I’m trying not to bother him and THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON AND I’M SO EXCITED BUT ALSO I AM BUT ONE PERSON. How can I make it to all these awesome events? At this point, I’m going to be upset if you haven’t made it to one of our awesome local Baltimore theatres. The fall show season is in full swing and you have 10+ shows to choose from every weekend. Like what are you even doing with your life? Go see a play! There are also so many festivals this weekend. On Friday I’m going to Oktoberfest Mount Vernon and then wandering over to see BIG Time with Alex & Olmsted at The BIG Theater. Saturday is Parktoberfest: Music Madness in front of Mount Vernon Marketplace, basically in my front yard so you know I’m there. After that I’m catching the afternoon showing of Broken Bone Bathtub: Submersive Finale. Then, if the spirits align, I’m going to see Evil Dead: The Musical at Motor House that evening. On Sunday I’ll obviously be napping. See how I fit all that culture and theatre in to 2 days? You can too!

Also, Charm City Fringe Festival is almost upon us. I’m doing a ticket giveaway on my Instagram so go see this post to enter!

Generally speaking, people seem to really enjoy it and we’ve been pretty successful with consistent crowds, and a loyal following in Hampden, and Mt. Vernon, so we are very excited to be invited to bring the game to Federal Hill!!We’ll be playing at MaGerk’s every Monday in the back bar. It’s free to play (of course), and like any good Trivia Night, we’ll have loads of food and drink specials. We will also have a prize for the best overall team, as well as one for the highest placing small team so it’s good for groups of all sizes. We’d love to have you join us, so definitely consider checking it out if you’re in or around Federal Hill on Monday’s.

An Evening of Victorian Magic
6PM – 8PM
Evergreen Museum & Library, Johns Hopkins University
4545 N Charles St, Baltimore
Just in time for Halloween, Evergreen Museum & Library and magician David London present an evening of enchanting entertainment, supernatural scholarship, and Victorian libations! Formerly relegated to shadowy street corners and carnival tents, magic enjoyed increasing acceptance during the 19th century as wealthy Americans welcomed its practice into their parlors, studies, and drawing rooms—and even encouraged their children to learn the craft through magic kits. Now, inspired by Evergreen’s antique magic set and his own research into the history of 19th-century amusements, technology, and occult practices, magician and storyteller David London performs a show that weaves together social history and intriguing illusions to examine how magic cast its spell on a society that was at once skeptical and impressionable.

Rather’s best-selling book of original essays, What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism takes on the toxic political atmosphere and polarized opinions of our times with a hopeful reminder of the core ideals that all Americans share. Currently president and CEO of News and Guts, an independent multimedia production company, Rather remains an integral part of our national conversation. In January of 2018, he premiered The News with Dan Rather on the Young Turks Network. The weekly show focuses on original reporting and stories that Rather feels are not receiving the attention they deserve in mainstream media. Yappie: A Musical Comedy (Public Workshop Performance)
7:30PM – 9:30PM
1 East Mount Vernon Place
Original musical crafted by AAPI artists in Baltimore, about the highs & lows of the creative process…and being Asian at the same time. Yappie (a combination of YAP, a young Asian professional, and yuppie) follows the story of Grace, a young Asian professional living her best life in the corporate world. Or is she? Passed over for a promotion, Grace finds herself in the unlikeliest of places: auditioning for a musical. Having spent most of her life living up to the expectations of her family, Grace begins to question who she is, where she belongs, and what it means to be Asian American. Written by Jenny C. Lares and composed by Bobby Ge, Yappie: A Musical Comedy promises to be a fun journey asking hard questions about identity & stereotypes with tons of empathy, warmth…and lots of laughs.
Immediately following the performance, we will be hosting a talk back & feedback session with the creative team about first impressions of the play, and their plans on the main stage opening in Spring 2020.

Evil Dead: The Musical
Oct 4 – 12, Fri & Sat 8PM – 10:30PM
Motor House
120 W North Ave, Baltimore
Evil Dead The Musical takes all the elements of the cult classic films, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness and combines them for one of the craziest, funniest, and bloodiest theatrical experiences of all time. Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon-killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons tell bad jokes… and all to music. The songs in the show are completely off the wall as well. Titles like “All The Men In My Life Keep Getting Killed By Candarian Demons” and “What The F**k Was That?” has had audiences rolling in their seats, and screaming for more and more blood. You don’t need to be a fan of Evil Dead to love this show. You don’t need to be a fan of horror to love this show. You don’t even need to be a fan of musicals to love this show. As long as you like having fun… this show is for you. Is it scary? No! Is it gory? No. This is a pure comedy start to finish. It has fun with the horror genre, and in doing so appeals to a wider audience than you could ever imagine. Plus it’s the only show with a “Splatter Zone” – a section of the audience that gets covered in fake blood. And with this combination of blood, jokes, cheesy effects, and really awesome musical numbers, Evil Dead The Musical is unlike any live show you’ve ever seen. 4 performances ONLY, so get your tickets now!
