I know I got an extra hour of sleep but I’m still tired. At least with the time change it will be dark enough for Light City – Brilliant Baltimore this week. Go to the Inner Harbor and check it out! On Thursday I’m going to Baltimore Style’s 2019 Big Bash at the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore with Mixolo! On Friday I’m going to see Drunk Shakespeare: Graves Ghosts & Growlers by Single Carrot Theatre at UNION Craft Brewing! Saturday we are headed down to DC again to see Billy Strings play at the 930 Club. Should be pretty fun! On Sunday I’m attending the Odd Lots Event at Rolling Road Golf Club with The Wine and Food Society of Baltimore, Maryland. I can’t wait to enjoy the leftover bottles from this past year’s dinners. All in all, it’s going to be a busy week. So many fun activities to choose from during Fall in Baltimore!

At 6 pm, jump in the line as we parade up Broadway to Eastern Ave. and back down again. Flash! is a guerilla lighting event that will temporarily illuminate several sites within the Station North Arts District. Armed only with high-powered flashlights, our team of volunteers—led by lighting designers at Flux Studio—will parade down North Avenue lighting facades, streetscapes and parks as we go. Along the way, we’ll be accompanied by live music by Baltimore musicians Sac au Lait. Afterward, everyone will gather at the Ynot Lot for hot drinks, tamales, churros and more music—plus a sneak peek at images of the four illuminated sites. To celebrate the release of Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African-American Cooking, award-winning author, community activist and culinary journalist Toni Tipton-Martin announces the launch of the Jubilee! Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ epic 17th-century novel, Don Quixote, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical that was one of the first shows to musicalize a piece of historical literature. Set in the context of the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is presented as a play-within-a-play. We encounter historical author Miguel de Cervantes in prison, awaiting trial by the Inquisition. When his fellow prisoners try to take Cervantes’ belongings from him, including his manuscript, Cervantes proposes a trial in which he proves the merit of the manuscript through a reenactment, enlisting his fellow prisoners as characters in his play. Together, they tell the story of the aged Alonso Quijana who believes himself to be a knight errant, names himself Don Quixote, and pursues an obsessive quest to attain an impossible dream. Against all odds, Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho Panza take to the road in a quest to chivalry and seek out the good and innocent in a world filled with darkness and despair. Through the story, all the prisoners – at least for a moment – are transformed. The mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight.

Begun in the early 1800s on land donated by John Eager Howard, Baltimore’s iconic Lexington Market holds the title as the oldest market in America. Ralph Waldo Emerson also dubbed it “the gastronomic capital of the world.” During the tour, we will visit Faidley’s, Berger’s, Konstant’s Candy, and other vendors that have been in their stall for a century or more. We will also explore the catacombs under the marketplace. Rediscovered in 1951 during the construction of a parking garage, the origins of these tunnels and vaults are mysterious. Were they used for cold storage before refrigeration? Did they house distilleries during Prohibition? We may not get the definitive answer, but we’ll at least get a first-hand look at these spaces that are normally closed to the public. Be sure to bring your canvas bags to do some quintessential Baltimore shopping afterward. And while 10:30 am may seem early for a Saturday morning, at least we’re not lining up when the historic starting bell would ring in the new market day at 2:00 am!

Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ epic 17th-century novel, Don Quixote, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical that was one of the first shows to musicalize a piece of historical literature. Set in the context of the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is presented as a play-within-a-play. We encounter historical author Miguel de Cervantes in prison, awaiting trial by the Inquisition. When his fellow prisoners try to take Cervantes’ belongings from him, including his manuscript, Cervantes proposes a trial in which he proves the merit of the manuscript through a reenactment, enlisting his fellow prisoners as characters in his play. Together, they tell the story of the aged Alonso Quijana who believes himself to be a knight errant, names himself Don Quixote, and pursues an obsessive quest to attain an impossible dream. Against all odds, Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho Panza take to the road in a quest to chivalry and seek out the good and innocent in a world filled with darkness and despair. Through the story, all the prisoners – at least for a moment – are transformed. The mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight.

Everyman was inspired to move beyond the boundaries of their theater space into their community by the upcoming presentation of Radio Golf – the story of a Black man running for Mayor of Pittsburgh and grappling with the complexity of gentrification in his home neighborhood that closely resembles Baltimore, and the Market Center neighborhood. These partners invite all supporters of Baltimore to continue bucking the terrible stereotypes spread earlier this summer by coming together and beautifying this beloved neighborhood. Participants are invited to stay after the cleanup for a Block Party with free food and drink, as well as deeply discounted tickets to attend the evening performance of RADIO GOLF. Cleanup begins and ends at Lexington Market and will focus on the surrounding blocks in the neighborhood. Inspired by Third Cinema, this series is open and free to the public and encourages spectators to become participants. We invite all people of Baltimore and beyond to join us for cinema, conversation, and a building of community. “Not a Film Fest: Anticolonial Conversations in Baltimore” explores the theme of social justice movements of the past and present that have largely been unrecognized or misrepresented. By crafting a program anchored in film, lively conversation, and debate, we aim to make clear the intimate (and sometimes problematic) connections between struggles nationally and internationally. Our program includes a series of diverse events across Baltimore city that make clear the connections between liberation struggles, regardless of manufactured borders, and to inspire a conversation locally that is global and intersectional in its commitment to justice and emancipation.

Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ epic 17th-century novel, Don Quixote, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical that was one of the first shows to musicalize a piece of historical literature. Set in the context of the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is presented as a play-within-a-play. We encounter historical author Miguel de Cervantes in prison, awaiting trial by the Inquisition. When his fellow prisoners try to take Cervantes’ belongings from him, including his manuscript, Cervantes proposes a trial in which he proves the merit of the manuscript through a reenactment, enlisting his fellow prisoners as characters in his play. Together, they tell the story of the aged Alonso Quijana who believes himself to be a knight errant, names himself Don Quixote, and pursues an obsessive quest to attain an impossible dream. Against all odds, Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho Panza take to the road in a quest to chivalry and seek out the good and innocent in a world filled with darkness and despair. Through the story, all the prisoners – at least for a moment – are transformed. The mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight.

This is a private event for Members of the Wine and Food Society of Maryland and their guests. The annual Odd Lots event will once again be held at Rolling Road Golf Club in their second floor ballroom. The Cellar Committee has once again selected fabulous wines that were cellar stragglers from prior events. This is always a great opportunity to revisit some favorite wines that you wish you had another glass of. Here is your chance! We have built a menu of small plates to go with each group of wines. In addition to our reception wines and appetizer we will have four main stations and a dessert table with wines. The wine list includes Chateau Beaucastel, Aubert Eastside Chardonnay, Brunellos from Poggio Antico and a Grand Cru Burgundy from Faiveley. The Odd Lots event is always a wonderful format to enjoy old friends and make new friends as we all circulate from tasting table to tasting table.
