Things to do in Baltimore this week 11/11/19

Hi friends! I’m hoping to take it easy this week, but there is plenty of fun to be had by you! I’m going to check out the newly renovated Fogo de Chão on Thursday. I never turn down meat on a stick. On Friday I’m going to see Baltimore Rock Opera Society‘s Space Kümité at Peabody Heights Brewery. You had me a beer and live theatre! Don’t forget, this is your last week to see August Wilson’s RADIO GOLF at Everyman Theatre. So many great theatre productions coming out this fall that it’s hard to catch them all but make sure you see these two!

It’s free to play (of course), and like any good Trivia Night, we’ll have loads of food and drink specials. Taste & Tour at the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion
5PM – 6PM
The Engineers Club
11 W Mount Vernon Pl, Baltimore
During the late-1800s Gilded Age, you needed to secure an invitation from Mary Frick Garrett-Jacobs—a sign that you had been deemed worthy to rub elbows with society’s upper echelon—in order to visit the mansion. Today, however, you don’t need to belong to the upper crust, or even an invitation, to see the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. You just need a ticket. For Mary Frick—often referred to as “Baltimore’s Mrs. Astor”—her lifelong passion project was the Mount Vernon Place mansion that now bears her name. To create the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, she ultimately combined three large rowhomes into one 40-room showcase that featured the work of two prominent architects: Stanford White and John Russell Pope. Sign up for our new Taste & Tour series, during which you can enjoy a docent-led tour of the mansion, learn its history, and enjoy a signature cocktail or sparkling water.

6PM – 8PM
Maryland Historical Society
201 W Monument St, Baltimore
Archaeologists Lisa Kraus and Jason Shellenhamer present their research on the two smallest and oldest wooden homes in Fells Point known as the Caulkers’ Houses. Located at 612 and 614 South Wolfe Street, the buildings were home to African American ship caulkers who were part of a prolific shipbuilding industry that depended on free and enslaved black labor. Caulking, the process by which a ship is waterproofed and sealed, was dominated by black workers, including Frederick Douglass who was a caulker in Baltimore in the 1830s. In spring 2019, Fells Point residents assisted the Herring Run Archaeology Project conduct an archaeological investigation of the Caulkers’ Houses. Learn about the hundreds of household objects they recovered that tell the stories of the people who lived in these buildings. This lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. Doors open 6 p.m. Light refreshments follow. Hosted by the MdHS Maritime Committee.

The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Baltimore Covers
8PM – 11PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Baltimore’s finest convene to celebrate the wise, wonderful, weird words of Daniel Johnson. Performances By: Anne Watts, Bob Keal, Caleb Stine, Yes Selma, Dave Heumann, Janel Leppin, Mole Suit Choir ,Micah E. Wood, Nate Yielding, Suzie Doogan & Emily Salinas, Walker Teret, Wheatie Mattiasich & Stephen Santillan, and Very Special Guests! Johnston, a true musical original, passed away this past September at the age of 58. His lyrics about love and isolation original packaged on lo-fi cassette tapes found their way to the likes of Yo La Tengo, Kurt Cobain, and the Flaming Lips who championed him to a wider audience. For this show, an exceptional list of musicians will be covering some of his most endearing songs. The Italian Kitchen of Marcella Hazan
6:30PM – 9:30PM
Schola
916 N Charles St, Baltimore
Marcella Hazan had never cooked before her marriage. Hazan’s recipes emphasize careful attention to detail. She recommends preparing food by hand rather than by machine and prefers the stove-top to the oven because it allows the cook to engage more fully with the food. However, her recipes are not necessarily complicated, one of the most popular recipes, wrote Marcella, consisted simply of a chicken roasted with two lemons in its cavity. Her many cookbooks have been our guide for decades when we want to prepare authentic Italian food. To pay homage to this great culinarian we’ll craft a first course of Spaghetti alla Chitarra with sugo di Zucchini e Timo (handmade spaghetti with zucchini and thyme sauce) then recreate her famous Pollo all’Abruzzese coi Pomodrini le Olive (fricassees chicken Abruzzi-style with rosemary, white wine, cherry tomatoes and olives) and to finish, Torta di Arance all’Anconetana (orange cake, Ancona-style) $79.99

Man of La Mancha
Nov 8 – 17, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 4PM
Third Wall Productions
1108 Providence Road, Baltimore
Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ epic 17th-century novel, Don Quixote, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical that was one of the first shows to musicalize a piece of historical literature. Set in the context of the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is presented as a play-within-a-play. We encounter historical author Miguel de Cervantes in prison, awaiting trial by the Inquisition. When his fellow prisoners try to take Cervantes’ belongings from him, including his manuscript, Cervantes proposes a trial in which he proves the merit of the manuscript through a reenactment, enlisting his fellow prisoners as characters in his play. Together, they tell the story of the aged Alonso Quijana who believes himself to be a knight errant, names himself Don Quixote, and pursues an obsessive quest to attain an impossible dream. Against all odds, Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho Panza take to the road in a quest to chivalry and seek out the good and innocent in a world filled with darkness and despair. Through the story, all the prisoners – at least for a moment – are transformed. The mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight.

Join the Baltimore Rock Opera Society for our next original production! Space Kümité is a live event that combines theater, music, audience participation, the spirit of professional wrestling, and the flavor of 80’s action and sci-fi movies. Welcome to the Ilion; a generation ship flung into space by Earth’s tech geniuses centuries ago to escape a dying planet. The ship left with no destination, and there is none in sight. It’s been 300 years, and the crew is getting restless. The A.I.s that run the Ilion have enacted policies to prevent open warfare: all beefs are settled in the ritual competition of fighting, singing, and loud insults known as “The Kümité”. Now, a signal has been detected. It might be the first sign of life from Earth in ages. The crew of the ship is in turmoil. Follow the signal? Stick to the mission? Does it even matter? As a Space Kümité attendee, you will join the crew. You will hear the choices argued in song. In shouted insults and arguments, and unarmed, zero-gravity combat. You will judge their merit. You will decide who fights, and who wins. You and your crew will determine the fate of the ship and, perhaps, all of humanity.
