Hi friends! I’m hoping to take it easy this week, but there is plenty of fun to be had by you! I’m going to check out the newly renovated Fogo de Chão on Thursday. I never turn down meat on a stick. On Friday I’m going to see Baltimore Rock Opera Society‘s Space Kümité at Peabody Heights Brewery. You had me a beer and live theatre! Don’t forget, this is your last week to see August Wilson’s RADIO GOLF at Everyman Theatre. So many great theatre productions coming out this fall that it’s hard to catch them all but make sure you see these two!

Archaeologists Lisa Kraus and Jason Shellenhamer present their research on the two smallest and oldest wooden homes in Fells Point known as the Caulkers’ Houses. Located at 612 and 614 South Wolfe Street, the buildings were home to African American ship caulkers who were part of a prolific shipbuilding industry that depended on free and enslaved black labor. Caulking, the process by which a ship is waterproofed and sealed, was dominated by black workers, including Frederick Douglass who was a caulker in Baltimore in the 1830s. In spring 2019, Fells Point residents assisted the Herring Run Archaeology Project conduct an archaeological investigation of the Caulkers’ Houses. Learn about the hundreds of household objects they recovered that tell the stories of the people who lived in these buildings. This lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. Doors open 6 p.m. Light refreshments follow. Hosted by the MdHS Maritime Committee.

Marcella Hazan had never cooked before her marriage. Hazan’s recipes emphasize careful attention to detail. She recommends preparing food by hand rather than by machine and prefers the stove-top to the oven because it allows the cook to engage more fully with the food. However, her recipes are not necessarily complicated, one of the most popular recipes, wrote Marcella, consisted simply of a chicken roasted with two lemons in its cavity. Her many cookbooks have been our guide for decades when we want to prepare authentic Italian food. To pay homage to this great culinarian we’ll craft a first course of Spaghetti alla Chitarra with sugo di Zucchini e Timo (handmade spaghetti with zucchini and thyme sauce) then recreate her famous Pollo all’Abruzzese coi Pomodrini le Olive (fricassees chicken Abruzzi-style with rosemary, white wine, cherry tomatoes and olives) and to finish, Torta di Arance all’Anconetana (orange cake, Ancona-style) $79.99

Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ epic 17th-century novel, Don Quixote, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical that was one of the first shows to musicalize a piece of historical literature. Set in the context of the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is presented as a play-within-a-play. We encounter historical author Miguel de Cervantes in prison, awaiting trial by the Inquisition. When his fellow prisoners try to take Cervantes’ belongings from him, including his manuscript, Cervantes proposes a trial in which he proves the merit of the manuscript through a reenactment, enlisting his fellow prisoners as characters in his play. Together, they tell the story of the aged Alonso Quijana who believes himself to be a knight errant, names himself Don Quixote, and pursues an obsessive quest to attain an impossible dream. Against all odds, Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho Panza take to the road in a quest to chivalry and seek out the good and innocent in a world filled with darkness and despair. Through the story, all the prisoners – at least for a moment – are transformed. The mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight.

Bring your own equipment! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Lord Baltimore Hotel is a 22-story French Renaissance hotel which stands 289 feet tall. It is the largest hotel in Maryland, located downtown, it’s an ideal place for business travelers, as well as people who are seeking respite from the many demands of life…and death! The Lord Baltimore hotel is rife with reports of ghosts. There is the ghost of the young girl who is continuously seen on the hotel’s 19th floor and even in the ballroom. She is often seen in her long, cream dress and black shoes playing with her red bouncing ball. Employees have seen the ghost of the little girl, as well as the ghosts of two adults. Sometimes, the little girl can be seen screaming, crying and rocking herself back and forth. There is talk of a young girl’s suicide on the 19th floor. It is said that the hotel’s elevators make constant trips to the 19th floor at night even when no one is ringing the bell. People have reported being touched by unseen hands in the elevator, as well as the lobby. Guests who are sensitive to the paranormal have reported waking up with nightmares. They have also complained about an unseen presence lingering in their rooms whilst they sleep. We will be investigating different areas each and every investigation. Every time you come, the ghost hunt will be slightly different. Some locations are subject to availability.

Walking Tour: Mount Vernon Place and Monument Climb

Mount Vernon began as the estate of Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard and grew to be the place to live for Baltimore’s rich and famous in the mid-19th century. The Garrett family, owners of the B&O Railroad, the Walters, founders of the Walters Art Museum, and other families, built and lived in handsome mansions along the four parks of Mount Vernon Place surrounding the Washington Monument. The recent award-winning restoration to the 200-year old Washington Monument is the latest news from the revival of this historic neighborhood over the last decade. Join us on a tour to hear the stories behind the Washington Monument and see the landmarks of Baltimore’s grandest historic neighborhood. If your legs are strong, climb the Monument’s 227 steps for a birds-eye view of central Baltimore! Per city code, space inside the monument’s tower is limited. Mounted Tropicals Workshop

Learn how to mount a tropical of your choice on repurposed treated wood from Oak Hill Sawmill. We’ll have a variety of low-light and bright-light tropicals to choose from. Whichever plant you choose will be suited to stay on the board for a few years before needing to be replanted. We will be using treated wood that is able to sustain continual watering. Each participant will receive a board pre-drilled with screws that is ready for mounting your tropical plant. Sorry, no discount for bringing in your own wood board. Participants will also receive 15% off plants during the workshop. $55 ticket includes all materials. Feel free to BYOB!

Acuña Acuna

‘Acuña Acuna ’ is a one person comedy show based on Erick Acuña ‘s real life as a Peru vian Latino living in America. The show is a series of true and hilarious monologues and sketches that follows his arrival in the US. ‘ Acuña Acuna ‘ had a sold out run at the 2019 Capital Fringe Festival and it was voted as ‘Best Solo Performance’ and ‘Best of Fringe’. It was also reviewed by NPR, DCist and Broadway World as one of the “must see” shows. The show was also a finalist at the Yes, And… Laughter Lab in partnership with Comedy Central Baltimore Improv Group offers free comedy shows every night of the week.
