Things to do in Baltimore this week 1/20/20

This is going to be a good week, lots of great theater going on! I’m off to DC for Tour de Bordeaux -DC 2020 on Tuesday, yay wine! On Thursday I’m going to see Be Here Now by Deborah Zoe Laufer at Everyman Theatre and I’m super excited. I can’t wait to see what kind of set they will come up with next. I’m missing opening night on Friday because I’m off to Rhode Island for a weekend adventure. Follow my Instagram for lots of Lobster-related food pictures!

He is coauthor of The Metropolitan Revolution and The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism, editor or coeditor of several books on urban and metropolitan issues, and a frequent media commentator. An Evening with Chuck Prophet

Chuck Prophet is the best damn songwriter in all of roots rock and I’ll stand on Alejandro Escovedo’s coffee table in John Murry’s flip-flops and say that. Since emerging onto the music scene at age 18 as a member of the seminal rock band Green on Red, Prophet has collaborated with everyone from Warren Zevon and Kelly Willis to Jim Dickinson and Lucinda Williams among many others. In recent years, Prophet’s music has been featured in several hit television series including HBO’s ‘True Blood,’ Showtime’s ‘Californication’ and ‘Billions,’ and FX’s ‘Sons of Anarchy.’ He also co-wrote all the songs on Alejandro Escovedo’s 2008 critically acclaimed album Real Animal. Join Stillpointe Theatre as we launch our new performance venue with this radical,new, Baltimore Premiere piece of Musical Theatre “POP”: WHO SHOT ANDY WARHOL? Written by the young newcomers Maggie-Kate Coleman (book and lyrics) and Anna K. Jacobs (music), “Pop!” does its energetic best to simulate the freewheeling fun of the Factory while positioning the speed queens and superstars within the tidy frame of a musical comedy. Cleverly conceived, vividly performed and professionally put together, it has moments of dizzy brilliance. But ultimately and probably inevitably, “Pop!” comes across as canned camp, as have so many other attempts to replay the crazy late-1960s groove on stage and film. In trying to show both the madcap excesses and the psychic cost of Warhol freakdom, the show turns these fabled figures into alternately cute and cranky cartoons. This Production is 80 minutes long with no intermission. Street Parking, and a “pay to park” parking lot is located directly across from the Theatre. Doors open at 7:30pm.

Wendel Patrick has been referred to as “David Foster Wallace reincarnated as a sound engineer” by Urbanite Magazine and as “wildly talented” by the Baltimore Sun. He has been referred to by XLR8R magazine as “a hip-hop producer that could easily make any fan of Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, or Madlib flip out.” The alter-ego of classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift, Wendel Patrick is rapidly making a name for himself as a producer to be recognized. In the February 2018 issue of Baltimore Magazine, Wendel Patrick was named one of 30 Baltimore Visionaries and labeled as “one of the most influential and omnipresent figures in the local arts scene”. His five albums, Sound:, Forthcoming, JDWP, Passage, and Travel were all produced without the use of sampling, with Patrick playing every note of every instrument. What is perhaps most astounding and perplexing to listeners is that there are actually no instruments…he crafts all of the instruments, and every note, electronically.

The Baltimore Kissa Society is proud to present a listening party of jazz music to nourish your soul, held inside Mickalene Thomas’ installation “A Moment’s Pleasure” at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Presenters Alexander Jarman and Vaunita Goodman will offer a playlist of tracks by important soul jazz artists, including some that transitioned from their jazz roots to become soul, funk, or R&B artists outright after the 1960s. Vinyl recordings of artists such as Jimmy Smith, Charles Earland, George Benson, The Crusaders, and Kool and the Gang, plus many more, will all be featured. Radical Jewish Songs of Resistance: Tsibele

Tsibele (“Onion” in Yiddish) is Klezmer band, who reminds us that in our politically volatile time, we can look into our history for songs, messages, and stories to inform contemporary communities of resistance. Tsibele’s Yiddish repertoire explores themes of life under capitalism, tyranny, and heteropatriarchy. Tsibele’s music explores the limits of the klezmer. These songs have a powerful resonance. Sung in Yiddish, they seem to be infused with extra historical heft, bringing singers and listeners closer together. When the group sings songs like Dem Nayntn Yanuar, with the translated words “Destroy the tyrants who are sucking our blood. They suck our blood like it’s the best wine/The czar and the government should go to hell— And they will” .although sung in a different language, from a different time, are heard loud and clear in our present day.
