Things to do in Baltimore this week 11/7/21

The time change has me all messed up. I feel like my daylight hours are already running out. Events feel a little bit slow this week in Baltimore. Maybe everyone needs a week to get it together before the holiday madness sets in? If you are looking for something yummy to eat this week you should check out Blowfish Poke’s new location in Cross Street Market. They had their grand opening yesterday and we ordered their Taste of Hawaii platter so we could try a little bit of everything. I’m headed over to Druid Hill Park in a couple hours to check out Submersive’s rECHOllection: A near-future theatrical experience. It’s the last day to experience it.

Blood Countess
October 29 – November 14
The Strand Theater
The life of Countess Elizabeth Bathory- the historical noblewoman accused of bathing in young girl’s blood so she could live forever young becomes a supernatural tale both creepy and creepily funny in the hands of the playwright of Kelleen Conway Blanchard. This fictional account follows the countess from her happy marriage to the fierce warrior Ferenc to her conviction and death bricked up within the walls of her castle. Landing solidly on the dark side of dark comedy, Blood Countess still employs plenty of Kelleen Conway Blanchard’s trademark humor and linguistic gymnastics. This historical horror story is filled with dead birds, headless soldiers, eel pies, and pailfuls of blood.

BRAVE: Art in Times of Crisis
November 13 & 14
Baltimore Theatre Project
BRAVE uses movement, music, and words to explore issues that matter right now in Baltimore and beyond – the role of protest in democracy, the challenge of the pandemic to individuals and communities, the history behind persistent inequality, and the courage of citizens who stand up against injustice. Deeply moved by real-world examples of courage and resilience, Full Circle’s multi-racial and multi-age ensemble of artists has created a performance aimed at both the mind and soul. Some of the works in this show engage directly with the world around us, exploring experiences of bravery that are both personal and universal. Ancestors who stood for civil rights and broke new paths for women fill the stage. Ideas and body language inspired by very young protesters from the 1960s through 2021 energize the choreography. Visions of emergence from dark times reflect the resilience and potential for healing within and across our diverse communities. Throughout, BRAVE honors the qualities that underlie courage – honesty, fortitude, conviction, integrity, and compassion.
