Things to do in Baltimore this week 4/10/17

This week is looking up weather wise!  Finally some spring temperatures!  Outdoor activities are starting to show up in the calendar this week!  Go hunt for some Easter eggs or March for the Animals!  I’m excited for Easter on Sunday because my restaurant fast will finally come to an end.  Cooking every meal is exhausting.  I’m ready to be lazy and order some Indian food after a long day of work.  Hopefully you have already made your Easter Brunch/Lunch/Dinner reservations.  If not, check out what is left on Open Table.  We’ll be dining at Petit Louis in preparation for our upcoming trip to Paris.  Get ready, as the weather gets nicer you are going to have so many fun options for Baltimore, you won’t know what to do with yourself!

IN BETWEEN is a witty and buoyant comedic drama about three independent young Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv struggling to find their way through Arab-Israeli culture, nightlife, and identity. Maysaloun Hamoud’s debut feature is a dazzling and intelligent portrait of this often overlooked demographic. Caught between hometown tradition and big-city abandon, these women often pay a heavy price for what seems a given to many: the freedom to work, party, and choose their own lifestyle. Leila, a criminal lawyer from a bourgeois secular Muslim family, works during the day and parties at night. Her roommate Salma is a lesbian DJ from a “liberal” Christian family. When Nour, a pious Muslim girl, becomes their new roommate, things become even more complicated, bringing the three together as they find a way to survive with grace and humor.

John Waters’ Make Trouble Signing
7PM – 9PM
Atomic Books
3620 Falls Rd, Baltimore
The People’s Pervert, the Prince of Puke, the Duke of Dirt, John Waters shares his sly wisdom in this manifesto that reminds us, no matter what field we choose, to embrace chaos, horrify with new ideas, outrage outdated critics. He first shared his gleefully subversive advice at the Rhode Island School of Design commencement, and video of the speech broke the internet. Now it’s a book, beautifully illustrated with the slightly demented line drawings of Eric Hanson, that challenges you to ASK FOR THE WORLD & PAY NO MIND IF YOU ARE INITIALLY TURNED DOWN.

Michael Patrick Flanagan Smith
10PM – 1AM
Rye Fells Point
1639 Thames St, Baltimore
“I play American music. It’s a sound that comes through time, crosses the melodies of Scot-Irish farmers and the rhythms of African griots. It’s a sound where Mexican vaqueros play guitar licks learned from Hawaiian Islanders. It’s a sound where Haitians dance with Catholics in ecstatic dirges celebrating life and death and life again from the horns of Satchmo to the horns Gabrielle. It’s an immigrant sound, a refugee sound, a slave sound and a self-made sound. It’s the wild, fighting, loving sound of the whole world tilted sideways and all the people tumbling over one another to land on a single patch of sweet fertile soil, and wipe the dust off our knees and say, “Let’s get to work.”

Along the way, a similarly deep appreciation for jazz lead to the desire to learn the alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone. With her combination of keyboards, saxophone and eclectic instrumentation such as the didgeridoo, McWavy composes a blend of unique multi-genre electronic music that tears at the heart and keeps listeners on the edge of astral ascension.
