Sand Mandala Opening Ceremony with Tibetan Monks

Share beautiful, sacred Tibetan traditions as demonstrated through art, living ritual, and prayer. With horns and harmonic chanting, they will open the five day ceremony of creating a sand mandala on the floor of the Mt Washington yoga studio. Come to hear this form of chanting unique to Tibet and watch them begin a masterful piece of art. On a five foot by five foot square wooden board they will begin to draw the sacred geometry, which will be the blueprint for the five days of creation of an impermanent masterpiece made of thousands of tiny grains of sand. This Tantric art serves as a deep prayer to restore order and harmony to the environment. The monks are highly trained in this work. Devout followers of the 14th Dalai Lama, they are sent to the United States to share their peaceful traditions.

Think a gang of friends supporting their acoustic songsmith of a younger brother who plays guitar like a sensitive percussionist who can’t read enough Hermann Hesse.
U.H.H.M has stood for many things, and other things over time. Us? Him? Her? Me? It has, and continues to be, and strives to be. Sometimes it isn’t, but when you hear it you won’t care. Nick Saia plays guitar, Chris Frick keyboards and horn, and Jack Naden plays the drums. U.H.H.M has at times been called “jazz music.”

Charm City Comedy Project is thrilled to announce our fourth annual all-comedy festival in Baltimore, MD. May 3rd – 7th is dedicated to sketch and improv, and May 10th – 14th showcases standup comedy. Events will include shows on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at the Charm City Comedy Project in residence in Hampden in the Lou Costello Room upstairs at Zissimos Bar.

Standup Week: Lauren Faber, Dorian Gray, Natalie McGill, Valance Michael, Liz Russo, Ian Salyers
Improv and sketch workshops will be held on Saturday, May 6th and Sunday, May 7th at Zissimos Bar, and will be taught by prominent and nationally recognized instructors – Chris Trew of The New Movement in New Orleans and Austin, Amie Roe of Magnet Theater, Düofest, and Philly Improv Theater, Matt Holmes of Good Good Comedy Theatre and PHIT, and Kristen Schier of The N Crowd, PHIT and The University of the Arts.
Standup workshops will be held on Saturday, May 13th and Sunday, May 14th at Zissimos Bar. Our seasoned and hilarious instructors include standup comedians Valance Michael (MD), Lauren Faber (NC), and Michael Furr (CCCP) – who will teach beginning standup, joke writing, identifying funny premises, truth in comedy, etc.

The 19th Annual Maryland Film Festival will take place May 3rd-7th 2017 and will coincide with the Grand Opening of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway, the new permanent home of MdFF! This year, Maryland Film Festival will take place on a walkable, 6-screen campus in the Station North Arts & Entertainment District.
Programming venues will be hosted on the three screens within the Parkway, located at 5 W. North Avenue. Other venues are MICA’s Brown Center, Gateway Building, and Lazarus Studio Center. We will also be hosting auxiliary events in our pop-up venue, the M&T Tent Village in the Ynot Lot (directly across from the Parkway at 4 West North Avenue), along with panel discussions in Red Emma’s!

Watson is an artist based in Maryland whose work focuses on exploring the urban landscape. Nearly all of Watson’s life he have lived surrounded by nature and pastoral beauty. For many this would be artistically inspiring, but it has never aroused his creativity. He found his creative sparked outside of his rural world. Watson’s work is fueled by the excitement of the “big city” and the often overlooked beauty of the landscape. Infrastructure as well as decay in urban environments are what intrigue him the most. Informational signs, advertising, graffiti, layered paint, and neglect weave a rich tapestry of imagery that is an endless supply of inspiration. His work has been featured in galleries throughout the mid-Atlantic region, and in various online galleries.

As spring takes its first steps, the voices of our elders guide us through stories of the aging mind and spirit on its journey. Come Shining was created by Temple Crocker with residents from Springwell Senior Living Community using TimeSlips, a collective story telling technique developed for people with dementia related memory loss. Come Shining is performed by Temple Crocker, Ben King and Dan Hanrahan, and incorporates the voices of many of the collaborating residents from Springwell including Leslie Bathurst, Bonnie Behner, Phyllis Cohen, Ursula Oliver, Alice Marks, Rosetta Mangeri, Josephone Sharoky, and Jackie Taylor. The show runs about 50 minutes. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved at: comeshining2017@gmail.com

Friction Fire: Bow Drill

It requires more parts than the hand drill, but is easier on the hands and thus ideal for beginners. In this workshop each participant will be making his or her own bow drill kit from local materials, to begin practicing with and to take home. The instructor will go over the appropriate types of wood to use for each part of the kit, demonstrate the basic technique of making and transferring a coal, and also cover the best materials to use for fire-starter, and how to get into a good rhythm with your drill. While empowering, this skill requires patience, persistence, and knowing how to pace yourself.
