Writers & Words, May reading
7PM – 9PM
Charmington’s
2601 N Howard St, Baltimore
We were going to just list a bunch of bands we’ve seen and ask which ones you think we’ve seen and which ones you think we haven’t, but then we decided not to do that because we’re no one and it’s not about us, it’s never about us, it’s only about the readers, the writers, the words, the audience, the coffee and the beer (there’s nothing more wonderful in the world than coffee and beer, and words, and writers), and if you want to ask them–the readers for May–what bands they have or haven’t seen, you can do that because you can always do whatever it is you want to do, but remember, the writers and the words and the audience, they come first and you have to show up to hear and be and see and it’s coming up in May on May 9th, so why don’t you come out and see and hear?

A Cultural History of Trilliums
7:30PM – 10:30PM
Cylburn Arboretum
4915 Greenspring Ave, Baltimore
Connections between trilliums and humans have existed since indigenous peoples employed their medicinal powers. They are coveted for their beauty, celebrated in song and rhyme, featured on stamps, and their perfect symmetry has been abstracted into logos, symbols and art. Their name is exploited to sell products and housing developments. Join us for a romp through the culture and the cultural history of this captivating genus. The story of trilliums is one of obsession and exploitation. Come early to check out our plant raffle and stay for light refreshments after the lecture. $10 at the door.

Alex Meixner Band in Baltimore, MD at Creative Alliance
7:30PM – 10PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Grammy nominee Alex Meixner is a unique character. A virtuoso accordion player who embodies both the energy and the camp of a music some might shrug off as the sound of a bygone era. Believe us, with the Alex Meixner Band, polka is alive and well. Meixner carries on a family polka tradition brought to America four generations ago by his Austrian violin and cornet playing great grandfather Leopold who emigrated from the Austrian province of Burgenland to the U.S. in the mid-1920s. Home to Germanic, Hungarian, and Croatian-speaking inhabitants, Burgenland’s blend of diverse musical traditions shaped Leopold Meixner’s repertoire and that of subsequent generations of Meixner musicians, including Alex’s grandfather Alfred.

UNION Craft Brewing
1700 Union Ave, Ste D, Baltimore
Union is hosting Blacksauce and Ekiben at their brewery for a collaborative pop-up of epic proportions. We’re talking award winning, locally crafted food and beer on a beautiful Friday night in Charm City. There is no better way to kick off the summer. Real talk, this collaboration has been years in the making. Blacksauce’s dope food, endless grind and awesome staff was what inspired the Ekiben guys to dish out their own style of food at another Baltimore farmer’s market. Years later, Ekiben and Blacksauce are teaming up to bring Baltimore a one-of-a-kind culinary event. It took months to create this unique, collaborative menu and there is no better way to enjoy it than with live music and Union Brewery’s amazing beers.

The Music of Clifford Jordan
8PM – 10PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
This concert, led by James Weidman and Steve Williams, celebrates swinging and beautiful music of Clifford Jordan. Jordan was a tenor saxophonist born in Chicago. As writer Ted Panken expressed, Jordan’s narrative gifts (included) his lyricism, wit, mastery of changes-playing and vocalized tone, broad and burnished at all tempos and harmonic contexts, equally comfortable deploying the bright colors of the upper register and the dark hues of the tenor’s bottom. His compositions were perfect vehicles for his excellent artistry.

Photo Flesh presents paintings and installations exploring the photographic, in which photography takes the role of the protagonist to seduce its audience, not for what it represents, but for its own sensual quality. Far from indexing frozen time, here photography makes its voice heard only to state its presence, which is both hard and fragile at the same time.

Slanguage Arts & Griot Glimpses is both a chronicling of one individual’s growth as a writer over a 15 year period of poetic evolution. (2002-2017) It is also a record of some of this era’s most pressing sociopolitical issues and happenings as witnessed and responded to in arguably some of the most radical and profoundly truthful incantations ever written down via the medium of poetry in a manner where the political and personal merge. Slanguage Arts & Griot Glimpses is very much “a research guide for the soul.”
