Things to do in Baltimore this week 10/9/17

I danced so much at the Fall Frolick last night that I can barely walk. Today is a day of recovery.  Thank God it’s a three day weekend. There are SO many festivals this weekend with themes like fall, harvest, oysters, beer, etc. It’s safe to say there is something for everyone in Baltimore this week. Also, it’s totally fun running in to you guys when I am out and about.  Don’t be afraid to say “hello”. I can be pretty socially awkward but its nice to know that you are picking up what I am putting down.

Susan Alcorn has a deep grasp of where pedal steel has been and is a bold pioneer of where it can go.
Join host Brooks Long for an evening of music and conversation with Susan about how blues great Muddy Waters led her to pedal steel guitar, her time playing Country in the 1970s, Straight-Ahead Jazz in the 1980s and since then, bringing her pedal steel under the influence of Indonesian Gamelan, Indian Classical and avant-garde influences like late-period John Coltrane and mentor Pauline Oliveros’ deep listening philosophy.

2600 N Howard St, Baltimore
Shakespearean drama meets millennial self-indulgence in this outlandish and driving take on King Lear. Boring, stuffy parents have been left for dead – consigning audiences to the not-so-tender mercies of a younger generation, a mix of heroes and villains indulging their own selfish whims. Despite sharp wits and sharper teeth, these Kardashian-esque kids are comically shallow, callous, and vain: more concerned with dancing and drama than their own doomed parents. But superficial pleasures can only reign for so long before their conscience catches up with them, unearthing ugly secrets, doubts, and fears.

A Great Day In Baltimore ft. Kyle Pompey – Gallery Viewing
6PM – 10PM
Impact Hub Baltimore
10 East North Avenue, Baltimore
We did this project showcase back in 2014 to highlight individuals from Baltimore who are doing positive things in the community. Our agenda was to try to remove “The Wire” stigma that’s been attached to our city. We wanted to show people that there’s more to Baltimore than what you see in the media so we chose to recreate the iconic Great Day in Harlem photo. Baltimore was experiencing an art renaissance that people needed to be aware of and these artists helped pave the way. Since then, we have grown and flourished to do things that I’m sure we didn’t imagine we would be doing. That was just three years ago. Imagine what we could do with a lifetime.

Lisa Mezzacappa’s avantNOIR – SF creative jazz in Baltimore!
8PM – 11PM
An die Musik LIVE
409 North Charles Street, Baltimore
San Francisco Bay Area bassist and composer Lisa Mezzacappa brings her lush and layered avantNOIR ensemble to Charlottesville in its first East Coast tour. avantNOIR is a suite of compositions for jazz sextet inspired by noir genre fiction set in New York City (where Mezzacappa was born and raised) and the San Francisco Bay Area (where she has lived for the past 16 years). avant-NOIR is a musical companion to Paul Auster’s abstract “soft-boiled” crime stories from his New York Trilogy of the 1980s, set in conversation with the West Coast classic hard-boiled 1920s-era detective fiction of Dashiell Hammett. The music progresses like a detective’s case, using clues and imagery from the crime novels such as maps, letters, messages and relationships between characters and places, to create compositions with acoustic and electric sounds, and composed and improvised material.

Wreckers Ball 2017
7PM – 12AM
Second Chance, Inc.
1700 Ridgely St, Baltimore
Second Chance was founded in 2001 to provide people, materials and the environment with a second chance. We deconstruct buildings and homes, recycle and salvage usable materials, and make them available to the public in our 200,000 square foot retail space. With the revenue generated, we provide job training to those with obstacles to employment. Second Chance has done a remarkable job funding its own programs over the past 15 years. However, as we seek to expand operations and involve more individuals in workforce development, we have begun fundraising. “The Wreckers Ball” is one such event, and we are hoping you can join us! The Wrecker’s Ball will be held at our store on October 14. Join us for live music, dancing, games, a live auction and a raffle. Food will be provided by Mission BBQ and an open bar will serve beer, wine and signature cocktails (like the classic Screwdriver or the lesser known Rusty Nail). The attire is “construction chic” – essentially anything construction-related. There’s plenty of free parking. We’re working hard to deliver a party to remember!

Lovers Dine
7PM – 9:30PM
New America
429 N Eutaw St, Suite 1N, Baltimore
We invite guest to dine at New America on October 14th – the upcoming event presents two lovers exploring their relationship aloud amongst the dining hall. The dinner of the couple will be mic’d and they will go over a round of questions. This is an initiative to explore some of the difficulties involved with being two creative people and having to also maintain an intimate relationship. It questions the stereotype of the isolated artist by garnering real world examples and answers. Relationships tend to be in constant flux – processes, procedures, and practices– that sometimes need to be reorganized through the narrative of others for a better understanding of what sometimes is healthy and sometimes does/doesn’t work. We’re hoping that these dinner conversations present a kind of public intimacy and works through the theme of date night as a semi consumerist form but also a convention of monogamy – to find something slightly more complex. We see how 6 couples over the course of several months divulge parts of their relationship in public. The first couple is Nick Scholl and Daniel Wickerham who’ve been together 6 years and married 4 years in December.

Talkback: Race, Shakespeare & Young Jean Lee
Play at 3PM, Discussion 4:30PM – 6PM
Single Carrot Theatre
After the show join Gerrad Taylor of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company and Shirley Basfield-Dunlap of Morgan State University for a discussion on the complex relationship between modern audiences and classical material. Share your thoughts on Young Jean Lee’s frenetic adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, and engage with our panelists on issues of race, identity and performance.

Antinori Wine Dinner
6PM – 9PM
Ruth’s Chris Steak House – Baltimore – Pier 5
711 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Since 1385, the Antinori family has remained an innovator in Italian winemaking—most notably sparking the Italian wine revolution of the 1970s with their creation of the first Super Tuscan—all the while maintaining paramount respect for the territory and long-standing traditions. Much like our own Ruth Fertel, the Antinori family established themselves as industry superstars by making bold, groundbreaking decisions without straying from their core values.
We’re bringing these two food and wine front-runners together for a one-time-only evening. Adding Italian touches to our traditional steak house fare, this unique dinner pairs five decadent dishes with five luxurious Tuscan wines—including the estate’s flagship wine, the Guado al Tasso. Come experience the tradition, passion and intuition six centuries in the making, served alongside savory courses and Ruth’s signature sizzle.
