Things to do in Baltimore this week 10/23/17

Halloween is almost here! If you suffer from FOMO this is not the weekend for you, there are so many good events and its hard to decide, especially for Saturday night. I’m super pumped to see The Rocky Horror Show – The Live Musical! And yes, I will be attending in costume! As usual, I’ll be attending Brews and Board Games at The Windup Space on Tuesday. Saturday is the unofficial day of Halloween celebration here in the city so be sure to make your plan. If you are here you probably already missed out on tickets to the sold out party at the Science Center.  Fear not, you have lots of other options. I prefer to visit several different bars in the city before ending up at Power Plant Live to dance the night away. You will also have plenty of opportunities to show off your costume the actual week of Halloween and weekend after. Now I’m off to spend the day learning how to make molé, wish me luck!

Korean cuisine is balanced by the seasons — stews tastes best in cooler weather and vegetables that grow in cooler weather taste best in stew — so during our stay we’ll do seolleontang (white beef stew), miyeok-guk (seaweed stew), sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) and beoseot-tang (local mushroom stew) all for health and clarity. Dishes other than stew, like bossam and pajeon, will be available too. Karma Farm will supply us with all manner of fall produce including winter squash, garlic, turnips, herbs and radishes and meat will come from local growers too. All stews will be fortified with sustainably harvested seaweed from Salt Point Seaweed in California.

Colterenzio is devoted to sustainable farming practices and they produce green energy through photovoltaic and solar panels. “Back to the Origins” was the motto of Luis Raifer, who founded and led Colterenzio from 1979 to 2005, pioneering their focus on quality over quantity, which was rare in Alto Adige at the time. Single Carrot Theatre
Single Carrot Theatre is hosting a story-sharing workshop to help develop a brand-new adaptation of Peter Pan. Come share your experiences and be part of an incredible theatrical project!
More about the workshop: Baltimore is home to a diverse and vibrant LGBTQ+ community – we need your help to bring this original take on a classic story to life. This will be an opportunity for our LA-based playwright, Joshua Conkel (Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events), to hear from members of Baltimore’s LGBTQ+ community. Joshua will return in the spring for a workshop series, when you will have an opportunity to be the first to hear a draft of this new work!

Foradori Wine Dinner
7PM – 10PM
Cinghiale: Salumeria – Enoteca – Osteria
A decade ago, a group of us traveled to Italy researching hundreds of details for Cinghiale. For us, the lessons learned at the table in kitchens, and in cellars, are the most valuable. One of our favorite visits of all time was at the Foradori winery in Trentino. A long time wine maker, Elisabetta Foradori, gave us a brilliant tour and explanation of her work and we had a wonderful lunch prepared by her mom including the memorable roasted rabbit and polenta dish. So a decade later, we’ll be hosting Theo Foraodri, Elisabetta’s son, at Cinghiale. Call 410-547-8282 to reserve your tickets!

Pigheaded
7:30PM – 10:30PM
Creative Alliance
A history lesson for dirty minds and zinesters. The documentary about Underground Comix artist Skip Williamson. Pigheaded tells the provocative life story of underground cartoonist and subversive satirist Skip Williamson. His unapologetic art exemplified the spirit of the 1960s counter-culture and revolutionary movements. Williamson helped lead the burgeoning Underground Comix scene five decades ago as a founder (along with Jay Lynch) of Bijou Funnies, one of the earliest and longest running titles of that Movement. From his involvement in the infamous 1968 Democratic National Convention riots to his oft offensive and lurid work in Playboy, High Times, National Lampoon and many more. Told through candid interviews, animation and archival photographs, Pigheaded faithfully portrays Williamson’s life as rebellious artist, irreverent pighead and loving family man.

KATIE KUFFEL: Tongue and cheek Seattle-based songstress smashing the piano in a manner that’s not quite blues, not quite folk, and not quite like anything you’ve heard before. Delight your ears with those fuzzy, in-between grey spaces that is Katie Kuffel’s music.
CORA SONE is a light heavy band from Baltimore. They are like the rain, sometimes soft and pattering and friendly, sometimes cozy and sad, and sometimes a torrential downpour. The trio (guitar, bass, synth, & drums) achieves a dreamy, glitched out, stuttering, and utterly unique sound by processing vocals through a modular synth, so that the same thing can never happen twice.

Tender Fm Cyber Edition: the REMIX
8PM – 11PM
The Crown
Tender FM is a free monthly reading series hosted by Anna K Crooks and Janea Kelly. A totally true story: Two people met at Tender once and became best friends. The world sucks but meeting someone you’d share a door with in the icy Arctic in the event of an unexpected iceburg is p chill. My fave yelp review said Tender FM was a “GREAT PLACE TO GET A DRINK AND FEEL A KALEIDOSCOPE OF EMOTION” and “FINE BUT SMALL PORTIONS” and also “LITERALLY WAIT EVERY MONTH TO STOP LOOKING AT MY PHONE FOR THIS”

Enjoy!
