Things to do in Baltimore this week 10/30/17

Halloween is here! I survived going out in Fells Point last night. So many great costumes! More fun to come this week. I never miss an opportunity to wear my costume so I’ll be at Costumes & Cocktails! on Friday night! Also, the Charm City Fringe Festival kicks off on Thursday and goes through November 12. Like most of you, I’m now off to binge Stranger Things for the rest of the day.

Monday, October 30

Haenyo: stewhouse
5PM – 10PM, Mondays, Oct 2 – 30
PekoPeko Ramen
7 East 33rd St, Baltimore
Starting Monday the 2nd and continuing every Monday in October, we’ll turn PekoPeko Ramen, our favorite Ramen shop, into a Korean Stewhouse. Korean cuisine is balanced by the seasons — stews tastes best in cooler weather and vegetables that grow in cooler weather taste best in stew — so during our stay we’ll do seolleontang (white beef stew), miyeok-guk (seaweed stew), sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) and beoseot-tang (local mushroom stew) all for health and clarity. Dishes other than stew, like bossam and pajeon, will be available too. Karma Farm will supply us with all manner of fall produce including winter squash, garlic, turnips, herbs and radishes and meat will come from local growers too. All stews will be fortified with sustainably harvested seaweed from Salt Point Seaweed in California.

FIRST MAJOR RESTORATION EVER!!! “George Romero’s gory, style-setting 1968 horror film, made for pennies in Pittsburgh. Its premise—the unburied dead arise and eat the living—is a powerful combination of the fantastic and the dumbly literal. Over its short, furious course, the picture violates so many strong taboos—cannibalism, incest, necrophilia—that it leaves audiences giddy and hysterical…. Night retains its raw power.” (Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader)

OUR LITERALLY STELLAR READERS
Alain Ginsberg (b.1993) is an agender writer and performer from and based in Baltimore City, MD whose work focuses primarily on narratives of gender identity, exploration, and performance, sexuality, and mental illness and trauma.
Lauren Brick draws pictures of sad mice for a living. For fun, she writes, walks around, and takes pictures of cats and dogs. She is a terrible gift-giver, but at least feels bad about it.
Haley is a fiction writer from Florence, Kentucky and, as such, a fan of all things bluegrass, bourbon, and college basketball. She writes mostly about families, trauma, cultural clash, and the romanticization of poverty in the context of Kentucky, and is in the middle of trying to write a novel about all these things.

Two Rooms by Lee Blessing
Friday & Saturday 7:30PM – 9:30PM
The Green Globe Theatre
141 S. Clinton, Baltimore
Two Rooms by Lee Blessing depicts a Middle Eastern hostage crisis, which separates Michael, an American college professor, from his stateside wife Lainie. Imprisoned, Michael shares his isolation and philosophical ruminations with the audience. Across the ocean, in solidarity with Michael, Lainie transforms his home office into a prison of her own. In her seclusion, she is besieged by Ellen, a hardheaded government liaison, and Walker, a charismatic journalist. Tackling themes of hope, trauma and compassion, the four characters of Two Rooms dissect the nuances of terrorism, international relations, and incompatible ideals, which echo loudly into the socio-political sphere of 2017.

The Modell Lyric
140 W Mount Royal Ave, Baltimore
The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses. The concert’s five movement symphony regales ears with Nintendo composer Koji Kondo’s original music, recalling moments of Link conquering dungeons, running through forests, and struggling to decide what color tunic to wear. Mariachi Flor de Toloache in Baltimore
8PM – 11PM
Creative Alliance
3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore
Traditionally known for its romantic machismo, mariachi is not normally the domain of women. In recent years, that has been changing with New York’s Mariachi Flor de Toloache(pronounced to-lo-AH-cheh) at the fore of that change. Building a reputation for a brave take on Mariachi, with open ended interpretations and new compositions, they still are grounded by sublime vocals- the hallmark of any great mariachi. For traditionalists or modernists alike, Mariachi Flor de Toalache is an exciting listen.

Emil Guillermo, an award-winning journalist and commentator tells the little known story of one of the largest Asian American groups in the country through his often comic personal tale of growing up as the son of a colonized Filipino, going to Harvard, working in the media and NPR. And, of course, there’s a murder. Guillermo describes his piece as “Spalding Gray meets Ferdinand Marcos,” based on actual American history where racism was often fanned by sexual jealousy. Before there was a Muslim ban, there was a Filipino ban. It’s all enough to make you go amok.
