Sand Mandala Opening Ceremony with Tibetan Monks
7PM – 8:30PM
Baltimore Yoga Village
6080 Falls Rd, Baltimore
Share beautiful, sacred Tibetan traditions as demonstrated through art, living ritual, and prayer. With horns and harmonic chanting, they will open the five day ceremony of creating a sand mandala on the floor of the Mt Washington yoga studio. Come to hear this form of chanting unique to Tibet and watch them begin a masterful piece of art. On a five foot by five foot square wooden board they will begin to draw the sacred geometry, which will be the blueprint for the five days of creation of an impermanent masterpiece made of thousands of tiny grains of sand. This Tantric art serves as a deep prayer to restore order and harmony to the environment. The monks are highly trained in this work. Devout followers of the 14th Dalai Lama, they are sent to the United States to share their peaceful traditions. All donations collected go to feeding the more than 2,300 monks now living as refugees in the Drepung Gomang Monastery, located in Southern India. Handicrafts and art from the Tibetan community surrounding the monastery will also be sold. 100% of these proceeds go to the monks. All events with the monks are open to the public, donation only. Free Improv Class
7PM – 9PM
The Crown
1910 N Charles St, Baltimore
Improv is the art form used by Tina Fey, Key & Peele, Will Ferrell and countless others to create their comedy. Improv is unscripted theatre and it is contingent upon moment-to-moment discovery and flexibility. It is often comedic, but not always. It has an excellent philosophy behind it: yes and. “Yes” is about embracing the situation you are given. “And” is about capitalizing on your given circumstance. Improv relies heavily on “if, then” styles of thinking, and encourages performers to embrace spontaneity and their intuition. It is also happens to be crazy fun! There’s absolutely no cost, just show up! Anyone can do it even if you don’t consider yourself a “funny” person. Bring a friend! Bring two! The more the merrier! Like a drop-in yoga class, every class will focus on a different theme.

ECM Artist Thomas STRONEN/Time is a Blind Guide Collective
8PM & 9:30PM
An die Musik
409 N Charles St, Baltimore
Norwegian drummer/composer Thomas Strønen presents a revised edition of his acoustic collective Time Is A Blind Guide, now trimmed to quintet size, and with a new pianist in Wakayama-born Ayumi Tanaka. Tanaka has spoken of seeking associative connections between Japan and Norway in her improvising, a tendency Strønen seems to be encouraging with his space-conscious writing for the ensemble, letting in more light. There are excellent contributions from the string players – the quintet effectively contains both a string trio and a piano trio – and Manfred Eicher’s production brings out all the fine detail in the grain of the collective sound and the halo of its overtones, captured in the famously-responsive acoustic of Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI.

Consider the Source – Deaf Scene – Mountainwolf
8PM – 1:30AM

NYC trio Consider the Source defy easy description. If intergalactic beings of pure energy, after initiation into an order of whirling dervishes, built some kind of pan-dimensional booty-shaking engine, powered by psychedelics and abstract math, it’d probably just sound like a CTS tribute band. Drawing from progressive rock, fusion and jazz, with alien sounds soaked in Indian and Middle Eastern styles, CTS blends disparate parts into a striking, utterly original whole. Dubbed “Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion”, the band’s music strikes a rare balance between cerebral and emotional, intellectual and primal.

With original compositions and the addition of lyrics to some of the more esoteric gems by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Hancock, Miles and Monk, Deep Water relentlessly seeks the lost sunken treasures only found deep on the ocean floor of jazz. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Judy and the General
June 29 – July 29, Fri & Sat 8PM / Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Judy and the General is Rosemary Toohey’s hilarious new musical about the biblical Judith and the powerful general Holofernes. Her image is in museums and churches all over the world. Hundreds of artists through the years have depicted a young woman in the act of beheading a bearded general. It’s not often that women are seen as heroes in the Bible, but among the handful of strong female characters, Judith is a standout. Intelligent, devout and resolute, she ingeniously uses her feminine wiles to outwit the mighty Holofernes, thereby saving her people from destruction. It’s a classic match between the forces of good and evil. The story of a woman who takes it upon herself to save her town from impending destruction, and the indecision of the male dominated leadership!

Jun 8 – Jul 1, Fri & Sat 8PM, Sun 2PM
Fells Point Corner Theatre

Few things frighten and intrigue as much as a ghost story, but incorporating new, thought-provoking questions around the idea of what happens after death can turn a plot into something special. “The Quickening” takes these questions in unexpected directions certain to keep audiences at the edge of their seats. It is the story of a pregnant woman who moves into a new home in Richmond, Virginia, only to discover that all is certainly not as it seems. She faces challenge after challenge with the help of her mother, and her mathematician neighbor, all the while standing against the skepticism of her husband, who has little faith in the “unexplained”. The Quickening celebrates the courage and creativity of womanhood as they face a dire situation where science and folklore intersect at a frightening crossroads.

The Bra Show | Opening Reception
6PM – 9PM
Y:ART
3402 Gough St, Baltimore
Y:ART Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “THE BRA SHOW”. This compelling exhibition of original art from some of Baltimore’s Biggest Art Stars will feature over 40 artists who have been challenged to come out of their comfort zones, each creating one extraordinary piece for this loaded exhibition. The opening reception will be held Saturday and will include a live performance by Baltimore’s own Laure Drogoul. The Bra is a symbol that defies simple definition. It can be seen as an object that gave women freedom from the constriction of a corset, or the representation of societal oppression that needs to be burned. It can be seen as functional or fashionable, sexual or modest, supportive or restrictive, liberating or objectifying. It can signify freedom or control, and be used to cover, enhance or exaggerate. The artists creating work for The Bra Show will explore this and more through widely varied mediums including painting, sculpture, textiles, jewelry, reuse, collage, glass, ceramics, performance and so much more. Each artist will show the viewer their unique perspective of this explosive theme.

7:30PM – ?
Metro Gallery
1700 N Charles St, Baltimore
Born and raised in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, identical twin brothers Amiri and Rahiem Taylor do not make the type of music that their borough of origin is usually associated with. Growing up surrounded by hip hop culture and all it’s glory, the Taylor brothers had more exposure in their house to pop, funk and soul music = from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. When they began writing songs in high school, they taught themselves how to play guitar and write songs based off of the Beatles. After high school they formed Blac Rabbit, bringing in former metal and church drummer Patrick Jones, followed by resident shredder Josh Lugo on bass (and sometimes guitar) to play their original psychedelic rock tunes.

Clam Slam – an original play
8PM – 11PM
The Old Church on Falls
3647 Falls Road 2nd Floor, Baltimore
From award winning writer Rufus Drawling, winner of the 2017 Charm City Fringe Festival Audience Choice Award, comes the original play “Clam Slam”. An eccentric family of championship swimmers is plagued each year by deaths by shark attacks (and alternately, blessed with swimming trophies) live by the ocean where wild horses trample the beach and beach houses. A cousin is troubled by his devotion to God and his suppressed homosexuality. A popular drug dealer pushes in on the family. An invalid uncle (the survivor of a shark attack) fights hallucinations of demons and spouts cryptic non-sequiturs. A gay surfer becomes part of their unruly clan. A bed-wetting grown man starts a relationship with his sister, and a double-wedding of incest and queerdom is planned for the same day as the great swim race in shark-infested waters. Who will live? Who will die? Who will make the wedding cake?

Urinetown is an hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms.
