Things to do in Baltimore this week 7/2/18

The week of 4th of July is upon us!  Plenty of things to do and places to watch fireworks if you are staying around Baltimore. I’m at the beach for the next few days. Look for me floating on a giant inflatable rainbow unicorn out in the water (you wish you were this cool, admit it). It is so on once I get back to Baltimore though. I’m planning to catch Urinetown:The Musical on Friday. Definitely attending Party in the Park with the Society of Excellent Women on Saturday. I’m attempting to stay up past my bedtime to watch Swing Underground at The Elk Room on Saturday night. Have fun and stay busy my friends!

Megg Farrell & Friends (NYC) at Black Cherry!

Black Cherry Puppet Theater
1115 Hollins St, Baltimore
One of our favorite singers from NYC, Megg Farrel, brings her brand of hot jazz, country, blues, and old time to the Black Cherry Puppet Theater on July 3rd! Megg Farrell grew up singing old folk tunes, writing songs and playing in rowdy folk-rock groups as a teenager. In 2013, she burst into the New York music scene and has been building a devoted audience ever since. She instantly became a hit in the jazz world but she was longing to return to her songwriting roots. Inspired by the release of her first full original folk album last year and spending the year touring through the south, Megg has put together a new project breaking out of the jazz world and into the world of classic country. Now, with years of experience under her belt, she brings the maturity of a professional jazz vocalist and the energy of a rock ‘n roller to her new project Megg Farrell & Friends. $10-15 suggested donation.

Fourth of July Special Screening: Nashville (1975)
3:30PM – 6:30PM
The SNF Parkway / Maryland Film Festival
5 West North Avenue, Baltimore
This cornerstone of 1970s American moviemaking from Robert Altman is a panoramic view of the country’s political and cultural landscapes, set in the nation’s music capital. NASHVILLE weaves the stories of twenty-four characters — from country star to wannabe to reporter to waitress — into a cinematic tapestry that is equal parts comedy, tragedy, and musical. Many members of the astonishing cast wrote their own songs and performed them live on location, which lends another layer to the film’s quirky authenticity. Altman’s ability to get to the heart of American life via its eccentric byways was never put to better use than in this grand, rollicking triumph, which barrels forward to an unforgettable conclusion.

Urinetown is an hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Judy and the General
June 29 – July 29, Fri & Sat 8PM / Sun 2PM
Spotlighters Theatre
817 Saint Paul St, Baltimore
Judy and the General is Rosemary Toohey’s hilarious new musical about the biblical Judith and the powerful general Holofernes. Her image is in museums and churches all over the world. Hundreds of artists through the years have depicted a young woman in the act of beheading a bearded general.  It’s not often that women are seen as heroes in the Bible, but among the handful of strong female characters, Judith is a standout. Intelligent, devout and resolute, she ingeniously uses her feminine wiles to outwit the mighty Holofernes, thereby saving her people from destruction. It’s a classic match between the forces of good and evil. The story of a woman who takes it upon herself to save her town from impending destruction, and the indecision of the male dominated leadership!

Urinetown:The Musical
June 29-July 14, 8PM – 11PM, Thurs- Sat
Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church and Asbury House
10 E Mount Vernon Pl, Baltimore
Stillpointe Theatre Presents Urinetown: The Musical!

We will be walking down 36th Street to Beech Street to 40th to 41st to Buena Vista back to where we started. We’re meeting at 1 and will be heading out soon after. The route we’re taking is less than an hour long, and we can take some photos after, or go get a drink! The theme is colors and bubbles. Dress as bright, loud, and sparkly as you can, and bring bubbles! Bubble guns are strongly encouraged if you have them because of how easy they are to use on the move, but I will also bring bottles, trays, and wands for you to use. Other things that are encouraged to bring include dogs, hula hoops, ribbon wands, and other fun things you can easily do while walking. Wear silly mouse ears, a clown costume, whatever you want! This is a safe space to be weird and bust out those neon fishnets you’re not sure where to wear. The pace will be slow, it’s just for fun! Let’s spread happiness to the people around us. All ages are welcome.
